### [10.p1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.p1)

Now begins the ritual manual of the propitiatory rite for the site in the Paramaśāyin style.

### [10.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.1)

Now begins the ritual manual of the propitiatory rite for the site composed by our father: / On an auspicious day prior to the stated day of house-entering, in the forenoon, being pure together with his wife, having performed breath control, having remembered time and place, having made the ritual resolution: "For the sake of accomplishing auspiciousness for this site at the beginning of the house \[construction\] and the like, I shall perform the propitiatory rite for the site together with the nine planets"; having made the ritual resolution: "As subordinate parts of that, I shall perform the worship of Gaṇapati, the puṇyāhavācana, the worship of the Mothers, the Nāndīśrāddha, and the appointment of the preceptor and other priests"; having performed those, and having appointed the preceptor and other priests, he should worship them with ornaments, garments, and other gifts—there are four officiating priests there. Then, the preceptor, having made the ritual resolution: "I shall perform the rite", should scatter white mustard seeds with these mantras: // 1

### [10.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.2)

"Whatever spirit has taken up residence here, clinging perpetually to this place, / let all of that depart leaving this place, and go wherever it dwells! / Let the spirits and piśācas depart in all directions! // 2

### [10.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.3)

Without opposition from anyone, one should commence the propitiatory rite. / Let spirits, ghosts, piśācas, and others, and Rākṣasas depart! / Let them go from this place to another! I take possession of this land." // 3

### [10.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.4)

Then, having combined together cow urine with the Gāyatrī, cow dung with "Gandhadvārām...", / milk with "Ā pyāyasva...", curd with "Dadhikrāvṇaḥ...", ghee with "Ghṛtaṃ mimikṣire...", / and water with kuśa grass with "Āpo hi ṣṭhā...", having stirred it with the syllable Oṃ using kuśa grass, / he should sprinkle all the houses and structures with the triplet beginning "Śucī vo havyā...". // 4

### [10.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.5)

Then, in the front of the house, having fashioned a pit of one cubit's measure of the sacrificer, square, with a vulva, and three girdles, or a raised mound four finger-breadths high, and having fashioned to the east of it two sacrificial altars of clay measuring one cubit and four finger-breadths high, he should fix four pegs at the four corners of the northern sacrificial altar, beginning with the north-east: // 5

### [10.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.6)

He should fix them with the mantra: "Oṃ, may the serpents and the world-protectors enter upon the surface of the earth in all directions; / may they abide in this house, always bestowing long life and strength." // 6

### [10.6\_2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.6_2)

The mantra is repeated for each staking \[of a peg\], and so on below. / For a temple and the like, however, in place of the word 'house', the respective names are to be substituted. / Thus, 'in a temple' and so forth are extended throughout. / Then, according to the order of staking, one should offer offerings of black gram and boiled rice beside the pegs. / Saying: 'To the fires and to the others who are sheltered here, / to them I offer the propitiatory offering, pure and excellent boiled rice,' he should present it. / Then, on a new cloth over the sacrificial altar, with saffron or the like and a pointer of gold, silver, or the like: / 'Śāntā, Yaśovatī, Kāntā, Viśālā, Prāṇavāhinī, / Satī, Sumatī, Sunandā, Subhadrā, Suradhā—ten,' / with these names beginning with Om and ending with namaḥ, commencing in the west / and ending in the east, finishing in the north, straight, / one should draw ten lines spaced two finger-breadths apart. / Again: 'Hiraṇyā, Suvratā, Lakṣmī, Vibhūti, Vimalā, Priyā, / Jayā, Balā, Viśokā, and Īḍā—ten in order,' / with these names, similarly commencing in the south, ending in the north, finishing in the east, / having drawn ten lines as before, and having recollected the Vāstu deity in the fire pit or the smeared ground, having established the fire, having drawn the circle of the nine planets on a cloth upon the southern sacrificial altar, having installed the planets and others there, and having worshipped them with the sixteen services, having installed a sacred pot to the northeast of it, having approached the Vāstu diagram, there, beginning with the square of the northeastern corner, on images or on heaps of unbroken rice grains, one should invoke the deities beginning with Śikhin with name-mantras beginning with Praṇava and ending with namaḥ. / There, in the northeast corner-square, on the head of Vāstu, one should install Śikhin, saying: 'Obeisance to Śikhin, I invoke Śikhin.'

### [10.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.7)

Likewise henceforth: / In the one square to its south, on the right eye, Parjanya; in the square to its south / and the western part from it, in the two squares, on the right ear, Jayanta; / in the two squares to its south, on the right shoulder, Kuliśāyudha; / in the two squares to its south, on the right arm, Sūrya; / in the two squares to its south, on the right arm itself, Satya; / in the two squares to its south, on the right elbow, Bhṛśa; / in the one square situated above to its south, on the right forearm, Ākāśa; / in the southern corner-square, on the right forearm, Vāyu. 7

### [10.7\_3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.7_3)

In the one square to its west, on the right wrist, Pūṣan; / in the square to its west and the square to its north, on the right flank, Vitatha; / in the two squares to its west, on the right flank itself, Gṛhakṣata; / in the two squares to its west, on the right thigh, Yama; / in the two squares to its west, on the right knee, Gandharva; / in the two squares to its west, on the right shin, Bhṛṅgarāja; / in the one square situated above to its west, on the right buttock, Mṛga; / in the one square situated above to its west, on the right buttock, Mṛga; / in the southwestern corner-square to its west, on the feet, the Pitṛs; / in the one square to its north, on the left buttock, Dauvārika; / in the square to its north and the square to its east, on the left shin, Sugrīva; / in the two squares to its north, on the left knee, Puṣpadanta; / in the two squares to its north, on the left thigh, Varuṇa; / in the two squares to its north, on the left flank, Asura; / in the one square situated above to its north, on the left wrist, Pāpa; / in the northwestern corner-square to its north, on the left forearm, Roga; / in the one square to its east, on the left upper arm, Vāha; / in the one square to its east and the square to its south, on the left elbow, Mukhya; / in the two squares to its east, on the left arm, Bhallāṭa; / in the two squares to its east, on the left arm itself, Soma; / in the two squares to its east, on the left shoulder, Sarpa; / in the two squares to its east, on the left ear, Aditi; / in the one square situated in the two squares to its east, on the left eye, Diti; / to its south, in the corner-square below the square of Śikhin, on the face, Āpa; / in the southeast, in the corner-square below the square of Vāyu, on the right hand, Sāvitra; / in the southwest, in the corner-square below the square of the Pitṛs, on the penis, Jaya; / in the northwest, in the corner-square below the square of Roga, on the left hand, Rudra; / among the central squares, in the three squares to the south of the northeastern corner-square, on the right breast, Aryaman; / in the corner-square to its south, on the right hand, Savitṛ; / in the three squares to its west, on the right side of the belly, Vivasvat; / in the southwestern corner-square to its west, on the testicles, Vibudhādhipa; / in the northwestern corner-square to its north, on the left hand, Rājayakṣman; / in the three squares to its east, on the left hand, Pṛthivīdhara; / in the northeastern corner-square to its east, on the chest, Āpavatsa; / in the nine squares in the middle, on the heart and navel, Brahmā. 6

### [10.7\_4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.7_4)

To the north of that, \[one should invoke\] Vṛṣavāstu: / ‘O Vāstoṣpati’—Vasiṣṭha \[is the seer\], Vāstoṣpati \[is the deity\], triṣṭubh \[is the metre\]; the application is in the invocation of Vāstoṣpati: one should establish \[him\], whether of gold or silver, with the mantra ‘Oṃ, Vāstoṣpati, acknowledge us.’ Then, outside the diagram in the north-east, south-east, south-west, and north-west corners in order, \[one establishes\] Carakī, Vidārī, Pūtanā, and Pāparākṣasī; in the east, south, west, and north directions in order, having established Skanda, Aryaman, Jṛmbhaka, and Pilipiccha with their name-mantras as before; in the eight directions beginning with the east, having established and invoked Indra, Agni, Yama, Nirṛti, Varuṇa, Vāyu, Kubera, and Īśāna with their respective mantras or names, and \[honoured them\] with seat and other services individually or together, having set up an unblemished sacred pot, having cast therein fragrant substances, herbs, barley, dūrvā grass, five sprouts, seven earths, and five gems, having wrapped it with a cloth, having placed a full dish filled with barley \[upon it\], having invoked Varuṇa, one should invoke the sacred waters therein. Then the ācārya should perform the anvādhāna. There, having recited up to ‘the two eyes with ghee’, having proclaimed the principal deities \[as follows\]: ‘the nine planets with firewood sticks and oblations of sesame and ghee of such-and-such number; the presiding deities, subordinate deities, Vināyaka and others with firewood sticks and oblations of sesame and ghee of such-and-such number; the forty-five deities beginning with Śikhin with firewood sticks, sesame, milk porridge, and oblations of ghee of such-and-such number; with the four verses beginning with “vāstoṣpate” in order with bilva \[fruits\] or their fragments of such-and-such number; Carakī and others with the four oblations consisting of firewood sticks and so forth of such-and-such number,’ \[and\] ‘the sviṣṭakṛt with the remainder,’ he should offer the aforementioned firewood sticks and other substances. Then the sacrificer, seated to the south of the fire, having named all the deities and materials, should renounce them for these \[deities\]. He should make the renunciation of ownership \[with the formula\] ‘Not mine,’ and so forth, because in a fire oblation performed by many priests it is impossible to make a renunciation of ownership at every oblation. Then the ācārya, having performed the offering of the kindling and other rites, should perform the principal fire oblation together with the priests.

### [10.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.8)

The respective substances and their respective numbers are now stated: For the nine planets in order, \[one offers\] firewood sticks named arka, palāśa, khadira, apāmārga, pippala, udumbara, śamī, dūrvā grass, and kuśa grass, each measuring a span, one hundred and eight, twenty-eight, or eight in number, and oblations of sesame of the same number. When there is a pot-cooked grain offering for them, the number of oblations is the same; but some say there should be one oblation of pot-cooked grain offering each. Then for the presiding deities, subordinate deities, Vināyaka and others, in lesser number in the same manner; for those house-dwelling deities and others, the firewood sticks of their respective planets, or palāśa; in the view of eight \[oblations\] for the planets, the learned say there are four for these \[deities\].

### [10.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.9)

Here, the count should be made as one oblation with three blades of dūrvā grass, and as one with three blades of kuśa grass. Then, for Śikhin and the others, one should offer firewood sticks, sesame, milk porridge, and ghee with the names ending with svāhā and preceded by the praṇava as stated before, with one thousand and eight, one hundred and eight, twenty-eight, or eight oblations for each. Here, udumbara firewood sticks are principal; in their absence, those of aśvattha and others as well. All firewood sticks must be offered anointed with honey, ghee, curd, or milk. Sesame should be black alone; barley should be white alone; some say barley may be substituted for sesame. With the four \[verses\] beginning with ‘vāstoṣpate’, \[one offers\] firewood sticks, sesame, milk porridge, and ghee in order, one hundred and eight of each. Then, for Vāstu, with ‘vāstoṣpate dhruvā’, he should offer five or one bilva fruit anointed with ghee for each verse. For the four \[verses\] beginning with ‘vāstoṣpate’, Vasiṣṭha \[is the seer\], Vāstoṣpati \[is the deity\], triṣṭubh \[is the metre, with\] the last \[in\] gāyatrī; the application is in the fire oblation. For ‘vāstoṣpate dhruvā sthūṇām’, the application is in the fire oblation, \[the seer being\] Vāstoṣpati \[and the metre\] bṛhatī. / Then, for Carakī and the others, one should offer the four substances in lesser number than the principal: the learned hold that where the principal \[number\] is eight, elsewhere it is four. All these substances must be offered with the hand alone. Then, having performed \[the rites\] from the sviṣṭakṛt oblation up to the atonement oblations, having given a propitiatory offering of cooked black-gram rice with a lamp to the directional guardians beginning with Indra, having filled the sruc ladle twelve times or four times with ghee and having placed a coconut or other fruit therein, one should offer the full oblation with the verse ‘mūrdhānam’. ‘mūrdhānaṃ divaḥ’—Bharadvāja \[is the seer\], Vaiśvānara \[is the deity\], triṣṭubh \[is the metre\]; the application is in the fire oblation. Then, having completed the remaining rites beginning with taking the praṇītā water, he should give a propitiatory offering to Śikhin and others in the western part of the vāstu diagram: ‘To Śikhin, this is your milk porridge offering, not mine.’ Having had those cooked by Brahmins with milk porridge mixed with ghee, or in the case of a kṣatriya and others with those \[dishes\] to be mentioned, then the ācārya and others, having consecrated the sacrificer along with his wife with the water from the propitiatory pot using Vedic mantras such as ‘samudrajyeṣṭhāḥ’ and Purāṇic mantras such as ‘surāstvām’, having meditated upon the Earth adorned with all herbs in the form of a woman, should worship her with the mantra ‘Oṃ, obeisance to Dharā; the dwelling site is composed of all gods, and supreme, being composed of the dwelling site deity’.

### [10.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.10)

Then one should encircle the house, beginning in the east, with a triple cord, using the Pāvamāna hymn and the Rakṣoghna hymn with a triple cord. / If the cord breaks, it is auspicious: / Then, with a jug with a spout filled with milk, and a jug with a spout filled with water, using the same two hymns, one should make two continuous streams.

### [10.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.11)

Then the sacrificer, having dug a knee-deep pit in the south-east of the house at the Ākāśa position, having smeared it with cow-dung, having decorated it with white sandalwood, flowers, unbroken rice grains, and other articles, having thrown in the seven seeds beginning with rice, and curd-rice, taking with both hands a new pitcher filled with water, containing a single white flower, and worshipped with fragrant substances and so forth, having touched the earth with both knees, should fill the pit with that water reciting ‘Oṃ, obeisance to Varuṇa’.

### [10.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.12)

There, if the whirlpool turns clockwise and the flower faces upwards, it is auspicious. Then, having thrown seven seeds, curd-rice, moss, fruits, and flowers into an earthenware basket, having brought the previously established Vṛṣavāstu to the accompaniment of the auspicious sounding of musical instruments, having placed him therein, and having worshipped him with fragrant substances and other articles, he should pray with two \[verses\].

### [10.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.13)

"You have been worshipped by me, O Vāstu, with auspicious fire oblations and worship.
Be pleased, protect \[me\], Lord of All! Give me happiness born of the house!" 13

### [10.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.14)

"O Vāstupuruṣa, obeisance to you, O Lord who delights in sleeping on the ground!
Ever produce abundance of wealth, grain, and the like in my house!" 14

### [10.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.15)

Then, having covered the box, he should slowly deposit it into that pit with this \[verse\]: 15

### [10.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.16)

"Just as you bear upon your head the earth with its mountains and oceans, 16

### [10.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.17)

so bear me, O auspicious one, together with my wife, sons, and others!"
And when the pit is filled with that very earth, an excess of earth produces the best result, equality produces a middling \[result\], while a deficiency produces the lowest result.
Having smeared the ground above the pit with cow dung,
he should decorate it with white flowers, perfume, and unbroken rice grains. 17

### [10.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.18)

Then, to the west of the fire, having worshipped the preceptor, having given an adorned \[cow\] with its calf and a pair of garments as a sacrificial fee,
having given a sacrificial fee according to his capacity to the Brahman and other officiating priests,
having performed worship of the planets and the Vāstu deities beginning with Śikhin, and having completed it, 18

### [10.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.19)

having dismissed \[the deities\] with "Rise, go, O gods!", having handed \[the remainder\] into the hand of the preceptor, having worshipped the fire and dismissed it with "Go, go!", having had the propitiatory rite recited together with the Brahmins, having fed three Brahmins or one each, or according to his ability, for the pleasure of the planets and the deities beginning with Śikhin, and having received their blessings, he should eat together with his friends. Having performed the propitiatory rite for the dwelling in this manner on the first day, he should make the house entrance on the second day. 19

### [10.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.20)

And it is done thus:
Taking with folded hands a new sacred pot full of water, accompanied by sprouts, joined with dūrvā grass, smeared with white plaster, wrapped with cloth, with a full saucer \[on top\], and accompanied by fruit, the sacrificer, accompanied by Brahmins and along with his wife and sons, having entered the house to the sound of musical instruments, should set up that sacred pot upon grain in the middle of the main room. Then, for the stability of the house, having had the puṇyāhavācana recited, having fed the Brahmins, having received their blessings, he should eat together with his friends. 20

### [10.20\_5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.20_5)

Thus ends the ritual manual of the propitiatory rite for the dwelling.
Some, however, prefer the precedence of Brahmā and the other \[deities\] specifically in the eighty-one-square diagram for the installation, worship, fire oblations, and propitiatory offerings \[of the deities\].

### [10.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.21)

Thus:
In the nine squares in the middle, in the heart and navel of Vāstu, \[is\] Brahmā. In the three squares adjoining to the east of that, on the right hand, \[he should install\] Aryaman.
In the three southern squares adjoining Brahmā's square, in the belly on the right side, \[he should install\] Vivasvat.
In the three western squares adjoining Brahmā's square, in the belly on the left side, \[he should install\] Mitra.
In the three northern squares adjoining that very \[Brahmā square\], on the left breast, \[he should install\] Pṛthvīdhara.
In the northeast square adjoining Brahmā's square, on the chest, \[he should install\] Āpavatsa. 21

### [10.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.22)

In the southeast square, on the right hand, \[he should install\] Savitṛ.
In the southwest square, on the testicles, \[he should install\] Vibudhādhipa.
In the northwest square, on the left hand, \[he should install\] Rājayakṣman.
In the northeast square adjoining Āpavatsa's square, on the face, \[he should install\] Āpas. 22

### [10.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.23)

In the southeast square adjoining Savitṛ's square, on the right hand, \[he should install\] Sāvitra. 23

### [10.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24)

In the southwest square adjoining Vibudhādhipa's square, on the penis, \[he should install\] Jaya.
In the northwest square adjoining Rājayakṣman's square, on the left hand, \[he should install\] Rudra.
Having installed \[the deities\] beginning with Śikhin up to Diti from the corner square in the northeast of the diagram as before, and having invoked \[the female spirits\] Carakī and the others as before, he should perform worship, fire oblations, and the like in that very order; the rest is as before. 24

### [10.24\_6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_6)

Thus ends the propitiatory rite for the dwelling declared in the Gṛhyasūtras.
Now follows the frog-shaped propitiatory rite for the dwelling (maṇḍūka-vāstuśānti).

### [10.24\_7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_7)

For temples, gardens, and the like, however, one should make a sixty-four-square diagram.
There, having drawn nine lines with their ends pointing east, standing northward, with these names ending in 'namas': Lakṣmī, Yaśovatī, Kāntā, Supriyā, Vimalā, Śivā, Subhagā, Sumatī, Iḍā; \[and then the lines ending with 'namas':\] Dhanyā,

### [10.24\_8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_8)

Prāṇā, Viśālā, Sthirā, Bhadrā, Jayā, Niśā, Virajā, \[and\] Vibhavā—having drawn nine lines with their ends pointing north, standing eastward, with these names ending in 'namas', having united the four middle squares, and having halved the squares by lines drawn from those four corners to the four outer corners, he should install the deities beginning with Śikhin.

### [10.24\_9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_9)

There, in the southern half of the northeast square, on the head, \[he should install\] Śikhin;
in the one and a half squares south of that, on the right eye, Parjanya;
in the two squares south of that, on the right ear, Jayanta;

### [10.24\_10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_10)

In its western half, on the right arm itself, \[he installs\] Vāyu;
in the one-and-a-half square to the west of that, on the right wrist, Pūṣan;

Then, to the north, \[he installs\] Vāstu in a sacred pot with the \[mantra\] 'vāstoṣpate'.
The installation of Carakī and the others is as before.

Thus ends the ritual manual for the Purāṇic propitiatory rite for a site (vāstuśānti), composed by Rāmakṛṣṇabhaṭṭa, son of the learned scholar Śrī Nārāyaṇabhaṭṭa, whose lotus feet are revered by assemblies of wise men.

### [10.24\_13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.24_13)

Now the propitiatory rite for a site as declared in the Sūtras is stated. And for the twice-born, it is combined with the one previously stated. In case of incapacity to perform the previously stated one, that which is declared in one's own Sūtra alone should be performed, since the purpose is still accomplished. For those who have no \[mention in their\] Sūtra, however, and for Śūdras, only the previously stated one \[applies\], because it is prescribed as common to all. And therefore it is not meant for Śūdras alone; hence that which is stated in the Sūtras is combined with the earlier one. In this regard, the ritual manual for that declared in the Āśvalāyana Sūtra is as follows: When the house, built of wood and other materials, is completed and filled with grains such as rice, \[the sacrificer,\] having entered at an auspicious muhūrta accompanied by Brāhmaṇas and preceded by the sound of musical instruments, having placed four stones in a pure spot and placed dūrvā grass on them, should place an earthen vessel called a maṇika with this \[verse\]: 'pṛthivyā adhi saṃbhava…' or 'araṅgaro vāvādīti tredhā baddho vāratrayaḥ / irām uha praśaṃsaty anirāmayabādham iti vā'. Then he should pour water into the maṇika with this \[verse\]: 'yo naḥ rājā varuṇo revatībhir asmin sthāne tiṣṭhatu modamānaḥ / irāṃ vahanto ghṛtam ukṣamāṇau mitreṇa sākaṃ sahasā viśantv iti'. Then, taking that water into another vessel and tossing into it perfume, dūrvā grass, a twig of śamī, a twig of udumbara, rice grains, tender shoots, fruit, and gold, he should sprinkle the entire house thrice with the dūrvā grass and the twigs, walking clockwise beginning from the east, with this hymn: of the fifteen verses beginning with 'śan na indrāgnī', the ṛṣi is Vasiṣṭha, the deity is the Viśvedevas, the metre is triṣṭubh, used in sprinkling. The recitation of the hymn is once. Then, beginning from the east, he should pour an unbroken stream of water thrice with this triplet: of the triplet beginning with 'āpo hi ṣṭhā', the ṛṣi is Ambharīṣa Sindhudvīpa, the deity is the Waters, the metre is gāyatrī, used in pouring the stream; here too it is recited thrice. Then, having established the domestic fire in the centre, having declared the principal deity as 'Vāstoṣpati, four times', having laid the fuel around (anvādhāna) down to the placing of the full vessel, having prepared caru offering for Vāstoṣpati, silently measured out the grain, sprinkled it in the same way, brought the rites down to the portions, and taken the prescribed cuttings in accordance with the rule of portions, he should offer fire oblations with the four mantras beginning with 'vāstoṣpate', each ending with svāhā: of the four \[verses\] beginning with 'vāstoṣpate', the deity is Vāstoṣpati, the first three are triṣṭubh, the last is gāyatrī, used in the fire oblation. The formula of renunciation everywhere is: 'This is for Vāstoṣpati, not for me'. Then, having concluded the remainder of the fire oblations, such as the sviṣṭakṛt, he should feed a hundred Brāhmaṇas, or half of that, or—by the general interpretive rule of plural number—if incapable, three Brāhmaṇas, with the remaining caru offering and other food. No other cooking should be done before the caru offering. Then he should say to the Brāhmaṇas: 'May you say: auspicious site, auspicious site!' Addressed by them with 'Auspicious site, auspicious site!', he should eat accompanied by friends. This is also recommended upon the renovation of a dilapidated house, like the ordinary propitiatory rite. / Thus ends the ritual manual for the propitiatory rite for a site according to the Āśvalāyana Gṛhyasūtra, composed by Śrī Rāmakṛṣṇa.

In the Baudhāyana-sūtra:
"Now then, one desiring the prosperity of his house should undertake the propitiatory rite for the house month by month, without returning, or once a year, in the waxing fortnight under an auspicious lunar mansion. He sweeps the house with apāmārga, palāśa, śamī, śirīṣa, udumbara, sadābhadra, and mustā grasses, and with indravallī. Having sprinkled it with the five bovine products with a handful of darbha grass, with the two \[mantras\] 'mā no mahāntam' and 'mā nas toke', having scattered white mustard seeds with the two \[mantras\] 'yata indra bhayāmahe' and 'svastidā viśaspatiḥ' and with the hymn 'kṛṇuṣva pājaḥ', and having set up the face of the fire in the center of the house-site, he offers from the pot-cooked offering with the two mantras 'vāstoṣpate, vāstoṣpate'. Then he offers two ghee oblations with 'vāstoṣpate dhruvā sthūṇām' and 'vāstoṣpate'; with these six, holding his breath, he should offer a thousand oblations with the Sāvitrī. After completing \[the rite\] up to the sviṣṭakṛt oblation, giving a cow as the prize-gift, gratifying the brāhmaṇas with food, he should make them recite 'auspicious day, well-being, prosperity'. Performing it thus, they foster great nourishment, there are many sons, children do not die, neither planets nor diseases seize them, tusked beasts do not harm them, and neither thieves, serpents, rākṣasas, nor piśācas torment them. If cattle are afflicted, he should offer a thousand oblations amidst the cattle; they call this the propitiatory rite for cattle. They teach this very rite for two-footed and four-footed creatures; a garment is the priestly fee—so says the venerable Baudhāyana."
Thus ends the propitiatory rite for the house and the like as stated by Baudhāyana.
Now, the propitiatory rite for inauspicious first menstruation.

After the fire oblation of the atonement starting with sviṣṭakṛt, having offered propitiatory offerings of black gram and cooked rice with lamps to the guardians of the directions, the nine planets, and to Bhuvaneśvarī, Indrāṇī, and Indra; having offered the final oblation with the triplet "samudrādūrmiḥ" (seer: Vāmadeva, deity: Agni, metre: triṣṭubh); and having concluded the remainder of the rite, beginning with the release of the praṇītā waters, one should sprinkle the bride and groom, or the bride alone, \[reciting\]: with the nine \[verses beginning\] "āpo hi ṣṭha"; "ya eka id vidāyate" (Gautama, Indra, triṣṭubh); with the seven \[verses beginning\] "tribhis tvam deva" (Vasiṣṭha; for three Agni, then the Viśvedevas; the first is gāyatrī, then anuṣṭubh, three gāyatrīs, the last two anuṣṭubhs); with the four verses beginning "samudrajyeṣṭhāḥ" (Vasiṣṭha, Āpaḥ, triṣṭubh); with the three verses of the Āpastamba branch beginning "devasya tvā"; "tam īśānaṃ" (Gautama, Īśāna, jagatī); "tvam agne rudraḥ" \[and\] "tam u ṣṭuhi" (Aṅgiras, Tiraścī, Rudra, triṣṭubh); with the six verses beginning "yad jāgrataḥ" (Prajāpati, Manas, triṣṭubh); \[and\] with the five verses beginning "indra tvā vṛṣabham" (Viśvāmitra, Indra, gāyatrī). Then, having sprinkled \[them\] with the \[verses\] beginning with "surās tvām", having worshipped the fire, having given a cow to the ācārya, an ox with a priestly gift to the one who recited the Rudra \[hymns\], and priestly gifts to the others, having performed the concluding worship of the deities, having dismissed them, having placed \[the fees\] in the ācārya's hand, having worshipped the fire and dismissed it saying "Depart, depart", having recited the great propitiatory rite, and having fed the Brahmins, he should eat himself.
Thus ends the propitiatory rite for the appearance of menses in the Śāntiratna composed by Kamalākarabhaṭṭa.

### [10.42\_43](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.42_43)

In the Madanaratna, however, it is stated otherwise from the Ṛṣiputrasaṃhitā:
"One should subsequently perform the propitiatory rite for the faults of the first menses.
One should make a separate altar for the worship of the deities of the lunar day, lunar mansion, weekday, and the like, with four āḍhakas of rice grains:
'An āḍhaka of hulled rice grains, and two āḍhakas of sesame and barley;
An āḍhaka, a kuḍava, a prastha, an āḍhaka, and a droṇa—
these measures of grain should be understood in sequence as quadrupled.' Thus it is said. Layer upon layer it should be spread, and in the middle of it one should draw a lotus.
Having covered it with darbha grass, one should place a jar in the center upon the pericarp.
Puṇyā, devī, ekapatrā, viṣṇukrāntā, sadadrikā,
and bilva leaves; having ground them together, one should place them into the jar.
Kuṣṭha, māṃsī, the two kinds of turmeric, murā, śaileya, sandalwood,
vacā, kaccūra, and mustā are remembered as the ten medicinal herbs.
Having brought earth from \[places trodden by\] elephants and horses, from an intersection, an anthill, a confluence, a lake, a cattle-pen,
and the area of the king's gate, one should throw it in.
One should also throw in five bovine products, a white water-lily, pearls,
diamond, cat's-eye, ruby, and coral.
Having thus prepared the pitcher, he should worship it with auspicious fragrances and the like.
And a twice-born should touch the pitcher and recite the Sāvitrī one hundred and eight times.
Then, at the time of twilight, one should bathe the two of them with these \[waters\].
One should diligently perform the fire oblation according to the rule stated in one's own Gṛhyasūtra,
having offered oblations with dūrvā grass, ghee, and sesame, with the Gāyatrī mantra,
either one thousand and eight times, or one hundred and eight times.
Having offered threefold into the fire according to that number, with dūrvā grass, ghee, and sesame equally,
and having fed the Brahmins, one should then worship the deity.
In this manner has been declared concisely the \[rite for\] the first menses of women."

### [10.42\_44](https://indike.org/pramana/in.niti.dharma.santi.santikamalakara~en-mt.10.42_44)

On this very matter, Nārada says:
"There one should perform the propitiatory rite with ghee, dūrvā grass, sesame, and unbroken rice grains;
and then one should offer an oblation of each one hundred and eight times with the Gāyatrī.
He should give gold, land, cows, and sesame for the non-arising of all faults."
This is respected by the cultivated, by the Prayogapārijāta, and also by Śaunaka.
Thus ends the propitiatory rite for the appearance of menses in \[the work\] composed by Kamalākarabhaṭṭa.
