dvādaśo 'dhyāyaḥ
2.12.1
ata ūrdhvaṃ pravakṣyāmi prāyaścittavidhiṃ śubham /
yamadhītya vimuñcanti śrutvā smṛtvā ca vai dvijāḥ //
Hereafter, I shall proclaim the auspicious rule of expiation, / having studied, heard, and remembered which, twice-born men are indeed liberated.
2.12.2
sadā triṣavaṇaṃ snāyāt sakṛtsnātvā payaḥ pibet /
prātaḥ snātvā samārambhaṃ kuryājjapyaṃ tu nityaśaḥ //
He should always bathe at the three ablution times; having bathed once, he should drink milk; / having bathed in the morning, he should constantly begin the muttered prayer.
2.12.3
sāvitrīṃ vyāhṛtīṃ vāpi japedaṣṭasahasrakam /
oṃkāramāditaḥ kṛtvā rūpe rūpe tathāntaram //
He should mutter the Sāvitrī verse or the sacred utterances eight thousand times, / placing the syllable Oṃ at the beginning and in between each repeated form.
2.12.4
sthānaṃ vīrāsanaṃ śaktaḥ kuryādāsanameva vā /
āsanaṃ śalyaviddhaṃ syād amadhaḥśāyī bhavetsadā //
If capable, he should remain standing or in the hero's posture, or merely seated; / his seat should be piercing like a thorn; he should always sleep on the ground.
2.12.5
gavyasya payaso 'lābhe gavyameva bhaveddadhi /
dadhyabhāve bhavettakraṃ takrābhāve tu yāvakam //
If cow's milk is unavailable, it should be cow's curd; / in the absence of curd, it should be buttermilk; in the absence of buttermilk, barley gruel.
2.12.6
eṣāmanyatamaṃ yaccāpy upapadyeta tatpibet /
gomūtreṇa tu saṃyuktaṃ yāvakaṃ tatpibeddvijaḥ //
Whichever one of these is available, he should drink that; / mixed with cow urine, the twice-born should drink that barley gruel.
2.12.7
etattu vihitaṃ puṇyaṃ kṛcchramaṅgirasā svayam /
praṇavātta samārambho nāmnā vajramiti smṛtam //
This holy penance, begun with the syllable Om, / known by the name of vajra penance, was prescribed by Aṅgiras himself.
2.12.8
etatpātakayuktānāṃ prāyaścittaṃ vidhīyate /
mahāpātakasaṃyuktā varṣaiḥ śudhyanti te tribhiḥ //
This expiation is prescribed for those joined with sins; / those involved in major sins are purified in three years.
2.12.9
athopapātakāścintyās tathā kālaṃ samādiśet /
kālasya tu yathoktasya brāhmaṇastatra kāraṇam //
Then minor sins must be considered, and likewise one should assign the time; / and for the time as declared, the Brahmin is the authority therein.
2.12.10
brāhmaṇā eva ca kṣetraṃ brāhmaṇā eva daivatam /
brāhmaṇānāṃ prasādena sūryo divi virājate //
The Brahmins alone are the sacred field; the Brahmins alone are the deity; / by the grace of Brahmins the sun shines in heaven.
2.12.11
na brāhmaṇasamaṃ kṣetraṃ na brāhmaṇasamo 'nalaḥ /
vidhirna brāhmaṇādūrdhvaṃ na daivaṃ brāhmaṇātparam //
There is no field equal to a Brahmin, there is no fire equal to a Brahmin;
there is no rule higher than a Brahmin, no deity beyond a Brahmin.
2.12.12
japatāṃ juhvatāṃ caiva yacchato ca satāmapi /
kṣetro 'gnestu susaṃbhūto brāhmaṇo 'dya viśiṣyate //
Among those who whisper prayers, offer oblations, give gifts, and even among the virtuous,
the Brahmin, who is truly arisen as the field of fire, is singled out today as superior.
2.12.13
na skandate na vyathate na vinaśyati karhicit /
variṣṭhamagnihotrebhtho brāhmaṇasya mukhe hutam //
It is not spilled, it does not fail, it never perishes at all:
an oblation offered into the mouth of a Brahmin is superior to the Agnihotra sacrifices.
2.12.14
devanāpitṛbhūtānāṃ kācidbhavati kasyacit /
brāhmaṇe devatāḥ sarvāḥ sa ca sarvasya devatā //
Of gods, ancestors, and living beings, a certain one belongs to a certain person,
[but] all deities reside in a Brahmin, and he is the deity of everyone.
2.12.15
yo hi yāṃ devatāmicched ārādhayitumavyayam /
sarvopāyaprayatnena toṣayedbrāhmaṇān sadā //
Whatever deity one may wish to propitiate as the imperishable,
one should always please Brahmins with effort by every means.
2.12.16
samastasaṃpatsamavāptihetavaḥ samutthitāpatkulakṣmaketavaḥ /
apārasaṃsārasamudrasetavaḥ punantu māṃ brāhmaṇapādapāṃsavaḥ //
Being the cause of attaining all prosperity, being comets to the mountain-like misfortunes that have arisen,
being the bridge over the boundless ocean of worldly existence—may the dust of Brahmins' feet purify me.
