ṣaṣṭho 'dhyāyaḥ
2.6.1
paṇe tu parṣapakalpasya kalpasya pariṣadbalam /
kāriṇaścāpyupasthānaṃ balaṃ samyaṅniveditam //
In the transaction, the efficacy of the rule depends on the assembly, and the assembly's efficacy depends on the rule; / and the appearance of the wrongdoer is duly declared to be an essential factor.
2.6.2
akalpā pariṣadyatra kalpo vā pariṣadvinā /
kāryaṃ vāpyanyathoktaṃ vā śuddhistatrāsya durlabhā //
Where the assembly is incompetent, or the rule is without an assembly, / or the matter is stated incorrectly, purification for him is difficult to obtain there.
2.6.3
pariṣatkalpato kāryā yathā sarve balīyasaḥ /
bhavanti na tathā pāpaṃ tasmin yoge 'vatīryate //
The assembly must be constituted according to rule so that all become efficacious; / not in such a way that sin descends upon that gathering.
2.6.4
evametatsamāsādya tadyogaṃ ca praṇaśyati /
mahatyāṃ cāmbhasi kṣiptaṃ yathālpalavaṇaṃ tathā //
Having arrived thus, [the sin] is destroyed by connection with that [assembly], / just as a little salt thrown into a vast water [dissolves].
2.6.5
etadyogapradhānāya kāryāṇi pariśodhane /
taddravyaṃ karṇasaṃyogād vaktrāṇāmiva śodhane //
For this assembly is paramount in purifying wrong actions, / like that substance applied to the ear to purify the mouth.
2.6.6
yatpāpaṃ śāmyamānasya karturdharmeṇa śāstrataḥ /
tadvadvacchati kārtsnyena bhāgaśaḥ prabravīmi te //
Where the sin of the perpetrator being pacified in accordance with religious duty and the treatises / goes entirely, I shall tell you in its parts.
2.6.7
gururātmavatāṃ śāstā śāstā rājā durātmanām /
antaḥpracchannapāpānāṃ śāstā vaivasvato yamaḥ //
The guru is the punisher of the self-controlled; the king is the punisher of the wicked; / Yama, son of Vivasvat, is the punisher of those whose sins are hidden within.
2.6.8
gurū rājā yamo vāpi śāstā dharmeṇa yujyate /
śāstā samucyate pāpād āhato bhayataḥ śubham //
Whether the guru, the king, or Yama, the punisher acts according to religious duty; / the punisher is freed from sin; smitten out of fear, auspiciousness [arises].
2.6.9
prāyaścitte yadā cīrṇe brāhmaṇe dagdhakilbiṣe /
dharmaṃ pṛcchāmi tattvena tatpāpaṃ kva nu tiṣṭhati //
When the expiation has been performed and the Brahmin has burned away his blemish, / I ask about religious duty in truth: where indeed does that sin reside?
2.6.10
naiva gacchati kartāraṃ naiva gacchati pārṣadam /
mārutārkāṃśusaṃyogāj jalavatsaṃpraśīryate //
It does not go to the perpetrator, nor does it go to the assembly member; / through contact with wind and the sun's rays, it disperses like water.
2.6.11
teṣāṃ tretāgninā dagdhaṃ pāvakasya tu dhīmataḥ /
naśyate nātra saṃdehaḥ sūryadṛṣṭirhimaṃ yathā //
Burned by the three sacred fires of those wise men, of the purifying fire, / it is destroyed without doubt, like frost at the sight of the sun.
2.6.12
prabrūyātpakṣato yacca bāhyaṃ yaccāpi parṣadaḥ /
gacchatastāvubhau mūḍhau narakaṃ tena karmaṇā //
And whatever one may declare out of partisanship, or outside the assembly: / both fools go to hell by that deed.
2.6.13
ajānan yastu vibrūyāj jānanvāpyanyathā vadet /
ubhayorhi tayordoṣaḥ pakṣayorubhayorapi //
He who speaks while not knowing, or speaks falsely while knowing— / the fault belongs to both of them, and to both factions.
2.6.14
ajānānāṃ ca dātḥṇām adatḥṇāṃ ca jānatām /
evaṃ bhavenmahādoṣas tasmājjñātvā vadetsadā //
Thus there would be great fault for givers who do not know, and for those who know but do not give [instruction]; / therefore, having known, one should always speak.
2.6.15
yattu dattamajānadbhiḥ prāyaścittaṃ samāgataiḥ /
tatpāpaṃ śatadhā bhūtvā dātḥnevopatiṣṭhati //
The expiation that is given by those who assemble without knowing— / that sin, multiplying a hundredfold, visits the givers themselves.
2.6.16
ye tu samyaksthitā viprā dharmavedāṅgapāragāḥ /
śaktāste tāraṇe teṣām ātmano 'nugrahasya ca //
Those Brahmins who are upright, who have mastered religious duty and the Vedic auxiliary sciences— / they are capable of delivering them and of extending grace to themselves.
2.6.16.p1
ityāṅgirasadharmaśāstre prāyaścittācārakathanaṃ nāma ṣaṣṭho 'dhyāyaḥ
Thus ends the sixth chapter, titled the Description of the Practice of Expiation, in the Dharmaśāstra of Aṅgiras.
