> "When the month of Āśvina has arrived, in the bright fortnight, beginning from the lunar day of the Creator, / the Navarātra takes place; Durgā is certainly to be worshipped therein," and so forth. Thus, once the commencement on the first lunar day is established, it is investigated: on which first lunar day should it be commenced? For there, the first lunar day is of two kinds: pure and overlapping. Among them, the pure one extends from sunrise until sunrise again. That is stated in the Nāradīya: / "Beginning from the time of sunrise for sixty nāḍikās, / that lunar day is indeed pure; this rule applies to all lunar days." / But the overlapping one is connected with another lunar day for three muhūrtas at the time marked by the sun; that too is of two kinds due to its conjunction with the preceding or following lunar day. Paiṭhīnasi says so: / "In both fortnights, lunar days overlap the preceding and following lunar day / with three muhūrtas; this is remembered as a general rule."
