103.1

The Lord said: / I will speak according to the rule of the removal and replacement of worn-out liṅgas and the like: / [one] devoid of characteristic marks, broken, overly thick, or struck by lightning,

103.2

[If] a liṅga is sealed, cracked, defective in its parts, and so forth— / for such flawed liṅgas, the pedestal as well as the bull [should be replaced].

103.3

A liṅga that has been moved, displaced, situated excessively unevenly, / disoriented in direction, knocked down, or one standing centrally that has fallen down—

103.4

if such a [liṅga] can be reinstalled and is free from blemishes, / [or] if it has been carried away by the current of a river or the like,

103.5

then it should be reinstalled elsewhere as well, through rites prescribed by rule.

103.5_2

Whether it is well-placed or ill-placed, one should not move a Śiva-liṅga.

103.6

One may perform installation with a hundred [mantras/oblations], but removal requires a thousand.
Accompanied by worship and the rest, even an aged [liṅga] is well-placed.

103.7

Having erected a pavilion in the south or northeast, with a single archway and a west-facing entrance,
and having performed the worship of the doorway and other rites, [one should perform] the worship of the mantras on a bare mound.

103.8

Having gratified and worshipped the mantras, and the site deities as before,
and having offered the oblation to the quarters outside, the guru himself, having sipped water,

103.9

and having fed the brāhmaṇas, should then petition Śambhu:
‘This liṅga of Śambhu is defective; if there is pacification for its removal,

103.10

preside over me, O Śiva, according to the prescribed rite of praise and reverence.’
Having thus addressed the Lord of gods, he should perform the pacification fire oblation

103.11

with honey, clarified butter, milk, and dūrvā grass, using the root-mantra one hundred and eight times.
Then, having positioned the liṅga, he should worship it likewise on the bare mound.

103.12

‘Oṃ to Vyāpakeśvara,’ reciting thus to Śiva without excess.

‘Oṃ homage to Vyāpaka, the lord of the heart; Oṃ homage to Vyāpakeśvara, the head.’ These are the limb mantras and the like.

103.12_2

Then he should proclaim the Astra weapon mantra to the reality resting there:

103.13

‘Whatever being is here, whatever [spirit] dwells resorting to this liṅga,
may it abandon the liṅga by the commands of Śiva and go wherever it desires!

103.14

Joined with the Vidyās and the Lords of Vidyās, it will be […] here.’
Then, with the Pāśupata mantra, a thousand [oblations] for each division,

103.15

having offered into the fire, sprinkled with pacification water, and touched [the liṅga] with kuśa grass, he should then recite [the mantra];
and having given the water offering in reverse order to the principles and the lords of principles,

103.16

the guru, having dismissed the lords of the eight cosmic forms residing in the liṅga and the pedestal,
having bound it with a golden cord, or with a rope placed on the shoulders of a bull,

103.17

leading it by means of that while the people chant the mantras of Śiva,
the ritual master should cast it into water; he should offer a hundred oblations for prospering,

103.18

and a hundred each for the satisfaction of the guardians of the directions and for the purification of the site.
Having performed protection in that abode with the Mahāpāśupata [mantra], then

103.19

the guru should properly install another liṅga there.
[A liṅga] consecrated by Asuras, by sages, by one's ancestors, or by knowers of the Tantras,

even if dilapidated or broken, one should not move even according to rule.
This very procedure should be followed in the restoration of a dilapidated abode.

103.21

Having deposited the host of mantras upon a sword, one should build another temple.
