13.1

Brahmā was born from the lotus in Viṣṇu's navel; Brahmā's son was Atri; from Atri / [came] Soma; from Soma came Budha; from him was Aila Purūravas.

13.2

From him [came] Āyu; from him King Nahuṣa; from him came Yayāti; / from him Puru; in his lineage [was] Bharata; then King Kuru.

13.3

In his lineage was Śāntanu; from him was Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā; and his two younger brothers, / Citrāṅgada and Vicitravīrya, [born] of Satyavatī and Śāntanu.

13.4

And when Śāntanu went to heaven, Bhīṣma, renouncing a wife, / protected his brother's realm, [for] young Citrāṅgada was slain.

13.5

Two daughters of the king of Kāśi, Ambikā / and Ambālikā, were brought by Bhīṣma, conqueror of enemies, for Citrāṅgada's [brother].

13.6

[They became] the two wives of Vicitravīrya; he passed to heaven from consumption. / By Satyavatī's consent, from Ambikā was born the king,

13.7

Dhṛtarāṣṭra; and from Ambālikā the son Pāṇḍu, through Vyāsa. / From Dhṛtarāṣṭra, on Gāndhārī, [were born] a hundred sons headed by Duryodhana.

13.8

At the hermitage of Śataśṛṅga, since [his] death was destined from union with a wife / due to a sage's curse, Yudhiṣṭhira was born to Pāṇḍu from Dharma on Kuntī.

13.9

From Vāta [was born] Bhīma; Arjuna from Śakra; on Mādrī, from the two Aśvins, / [were born] Nakula and Sahadeva; Pāṇḍu died united with Mādrī.

13.10

Karṇa was born to Kuntī when she was an unmarried maiden; he took refuge with Duryodhana. / Enmity arose indeed between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas by the decree of fate.

13.11

13.11.p1

The evil-minded Duryodhana burned the Pāṇḍavas in the house of lac; / but the Pāṇḍavas escaped from the burning house, their mother behind them.

13.12

Then in Ekacakrā, in the dwelling of a brāhmaṇa, / they all stayed disguised as ascetics, having slain the rākṣasa Vaka.

13.13

They went to the Pāñcāla region; at Draupadī's svayaṃvara, / Draupadī was won by the five Pāṇḍavas through shooting the target.

13.14

Then, recognised by Duryodhana and the others, they received half the kingdom, / and [Arjuna received] the divine bow Gāṇḍīva and an excellent chariot from the Fire-god,

13.15

and Kṛṣṇa as his charioteer in battle, inexhaustible arrows, / and the Brahmāstra and other [weapons] from Droṇa; they all became skilled in arms.

13.16

Together with Kṛṣṇa, that Arjuna fully satiated the Fire-god in Khāṇḍava, / the Pāṇḍava warding off Indra's downpour with a shower of arrows.

13.17

The quarters were conquered by the Pāṇḍavas, and Yudhiṣṭhira ruled the kingdom; / he [performed] the Rājasūya sacrifice with abundant gold; Suyodhana could not endure it.

13.18

Urged by his brother Duḥśāsana and by Karṇa, who had gained prosperity, / and with Śakuni acting in the gambling match, through dice he [conquered] Yudhiṣṭhira.

13.19

He won his kingdom, and standing in the assembly, he laughed maliciously. / Defeated, Yudhiṣṭhira went to the forest accompanied by his brothers.

13.20

He spent the twelve years in the forest as promised, / feeding eighty-eight thousand twice-born as before.

13.21

With Dhaumya, and with Draupadī as the sixth, the king went to the court of Virāṭa; / [Yudhiṣṭhira was] Kaṅka, an unknown brāhmaṇa, and Bhīma became the cook.

13.22

With Dhaumya, and Draupadī as the sixth, he then set out for Virāṭa's realm. / [Yudhiṣṭhira became] the twice-born Kaṅka, unknown, a king; then Bhīma, a cook.

Arjuna became Bṛhannalā; the wife [became] Sairindhrī; likewise the twins / [took] other names; and Bhīmasena slew Kīcaka by night,

13.23

who wished to abduct Draupadī; and Arjuna defeated the Kurus / who were seizing cattle and other [wealth]; then the Pāṇḍavas were recognised by them.

13.24

Subhadrā, the sister of Kṛṣṇa, gave birth from Arjuna / to Abhimanyu; and Virāṭa gave [him] his daughter Uttarā.

13.25

Dharmarāja became the commander of seven akṣauhiṇīs for the battle. / Kṛṣṇa went as an envoy and spoke to the impatient Duryodhana,

13.26

King Duryodhana, who was then the commander of eleven akṣauhiṇīs: / 'Give half the kingdom to Yudhiṣṭhira, or five villages;

13.27

or else fight!' Having heard his words, Suyodhana said to Kṛṣṇa: / 'I will not give even the tip of a needle of land; determined to fight, I shall wage war.'

13.28

Having displayed his unassailable cosmic form, revered by Vidura, / [Kṛṣṇa] went away, and said to Yudhiṣṭhira: 'Make war upon this Suyodhana.'
