177.1

Agni said: / I shall declare the votive observance of the second lunar day, which bestows worldly enjoyment and liberation. / Subsisting on flowers on the second lunar day, one should worship the two gods, the Aśvins,

177.2

for a year; the observer of the vow obtains beauty and good fortune, and partakes of heaven. / On the second lunar day of the bright fortnight of Kārttika, one should worship Yama;

177.3

having fasted [on this day] for a year, the observer of the vow goes to heaven and does not enter hell. / I shall declare the Aśūnyaśayana [vow], which averts widowhood and brings other benefits.

177.4

One should perform this on the second lunar day of the dark fortnight of Śrāvaṇa: / "O bearer of the Śrīvatsa, O beloved of Śrī, O abode of Śrī, O Lord of Śrī, O imperishable one!

177.5

May my householder life, which bestows righteousness, wealth, and desire, not perish! / May my fires not perish! May my deities not perish!"

177.6

May the ancestors not perish away from me through marital discord. / Just as You, O God, are never separated from Lakṣmī,

177.7

so too, O God, may my marital union not be broken. / Just as Your bed is never devoid of Lakṣmī, O boon-giver, O All-pervading One,

177.8

so also may my bed not be empty, O Madhusūdana! / One should worship Lakṣmī and Viṣṇu for a year, and give a bed and fruits,

177.9

and each month offer a water offering accompanied by mantras to Soma:
