236.1

Puṣkara said:
Just as a hymn of praise to Śrī was formerly made by Indra for the stability of royal fortune,
even so a king should utter a hymn of praise for the sake of victory.

236.2

Indra said:
I bow to Śrī, the mother of all worlds, born of the ocean,
having eyes like fully blossomed lotuses, dwelling on the chest of Viṣṇu.

236.3

You are accomplishment, you are svadhā, svāhā, [and] nectar, O purifier of the worlds!
Twilight, night, radiance, prosperity, intelligence, faith, Sarasvatī,

236.4

the knowledge of sacrifice, the great knowledge, the secret knowledge, O beautiful one,
and the knowledge of the Self are you, O goddess, the granter of the fruit of complete liberation!

236.5

Logic, the triple Veda, commerce, and the science of politics are you alone;
by you, gentle with gentle forms of the world, this [universe] has been filled, O goddess!

236.6

Who else indeed but you, O goddess, abides upon the body
of the God of gods, the bearer of the mace, which is comprised of all sacrifices and contemplated by yogins?

236.7

When abandoned by you, O goddess, the entire triple world
became almost perished; it has now been made to flourish by you.

236.8

Wives, sons, likewise home, friends, grain, and wealth—
all this comes to men, O highly fortunate one, constantly from your glance.

236.8.p1

236.9

Bodily health, sovereignty, the destruction of enemy factions, [and] happiness,
O goddess, are not difficult to obtain for men who are looked upon by your gaze.

236.10

You are the mother of all beings; the God of gods, Hari, is the father.
By you and by this Viṣṇu, O mother, the world, moving and unmoving, is pervaded.

236.11

Do not abandon [our] honor, treasury, nor granary, not [our] house, not retinue,
not [our] body and wife, O purifier of all!

236.12

Do not abandon sons, nor circle of friends, nor cattle, nor ornaments, / O you whose abode is the chest of my god Viṣṇu!

236.13

Those men whom you abandon, O spotless one, are immediately abandoned / by goodness, truth, and ritual purity, and likewise by virtues such as good conduct.

236.14

Looked upon by you, even men devoid of virtues / are instantly endowed with all virtues such as good conduct, and with noble birth and sovereignty.

236.15

He is praiseworthy, he is virtuous, fortunate, of noble lineage, and wise; / he is brave and valiant, who is looked upon by you, O goddess.

236.16

All virtues, beginning with good conduct, immediately become deficiencies / for him from whom you turn your face away, O sustainer of the world, beloved of Viṣṇu!

236.17

Even the tongue of the Creator is unable to describe your virtues. / Be gracious, O lotus-eyed goddess! Never forsake us!

236.18

Puṣkara said: / Praised in this manner, Śrī granted Indra his desired boon: / enduring stability of his realm, victory in battle, and the like.
