268.1

Puṣkara said: / I will proclaim the mantras for the parasol and other items, by which, when worshipped, victory and other blessings [are attained]. / By the true word of Brahmā, and of Soma and Varuṇa,

268.2

and by the splendor of the Sun, prosper, O intelligent one, / O you who resemble white radiance, brilliant like snow, the kunda flower, and the moon!

268.3

Just as a cloud covers this earth for its welfare, / so cover the king for victory, health, and prosperity.

268.4

You are born of the Gandharva lineage; do not bring disgrace to your lineage! / By the true word of Brahmā, and of Soma and Varuṇa,

268.5

and by the power of the consumer of oblations, grow strong, O horse! / And by the brilliance of the Sun, and by the ascetic austerity of the sages,

268.6

by the celibacy of Rudra, and by the strength of the Wind, / remember that you are a prince! Remember the Kaustubha gem!

268.7

The destination to which a killer of a brāhmaṇa, a father, or a mother goes, / or a speaker of falsehood for the sake of land, or a warrior who turns his back on battle—

268.8

may you swiftly go to that destination! May that sin not be yours! / May you not become disfigured in battle or on the road, O horse!

268.9

Slaying enemies in battle, be happy along with your master! / O banner of Indra, the mighty, golden-winged one has resorted to you,

268.10

the king of birds, the son of Vinatā, and the emblem of Nārāyaṇa,

268.10.p1

[Page 478]

268.10_2

the son of Kaśyapa, the bringer of nectar, the enemy of serpents, the vehicle of Viṣṇu,

268.11

immeasurable, invincible, the slayer of the foes of the gods in battle, / of great strength, great speed, huge body, the consumer of nectar,

268.12

Garutmān, who moves like the wind, is stationed present within you. / For you were established by Viṣṇu, the god of gods, for Indra's sake.

268.13

Be ever for my victory, and for the increase of my army! / Protect our warriors with their horses, armor, and weapons, and burn up the enemies!

268.14

Kumuda, Airāvaṇa, Padma, Puṣpadanta, then Vāmana, / Supratīka, Añjana, and Nīla—these eight are born of divine origin.

268.15

Their sons and grandsons resort to the eight forces; / [the classes of elephants are:] bhadra, manda, mṛga, and saṃkīrṇa.

268.16

Born in forest after forest, remember your origin, O great elephants! / May the Vasus, Rudras, and Ādityas, along with the hosts of Maruts, protect you.

268.17

Protect your master, O lord of elephants; let your duty be preserved! / Mounted on Airāvata, holding the thunderbolt, Śatakratu,

268.18

following behind you—may that king of the gods protect you! / Attain victory in battle, and always march in sound condition!

268.19

Attain strength in battle equal to Airāvata! / May your fortune come from Soma, strength from Viṣṇu, brilliance from the Sun, speed from the Wind,

268.20

steadfastness from the mountain, victory from Rudra, and renown from the divine Purandara! / May the elephants protect you in battle, and the directions along with their deities!

268.21

May the Aśvins together with the Gandharvas protect you from all quarters! / The Manus, Vasus, Rudras, Vāyu, Soma, the great sages,

268.21.p1

[Page 479]

268.22

the hosts of nāgas, kinnaras, gandharvas, yakṣas, and bhūtas, the planets, / the Pramathas along with the Ādityas, the Lord of spirits with the Mothers,

268.23

Indra, Skanda the general of the army, and Varuṇa have resorted to you. / Let them burn all enemies, and let the king attain victory!

268.24

Whatever ornaments are employed all around by enemies, / may they fall, destroyed by your brilliance, upon your enemies!

268.25

Just as in the slaying of Kālanemi, in the battle of the destruction of Tripura, / in the battle of Hiraṇyakaśipu, and in the slaughter of all the asuras,

268.26

you shone, just so shine today! Remember your duty! / Seeing this black and white [banner], may the king's enemies quickly perish,

268.27

overcome in battle by diverse, terrible diseases and by weapons! / Pūtanā, Revatī, Lekhā, and the one called Kālarātrī—

268.28

having resorted to you, O banner, let them quickly consume all foes! / In the Sarvamedha great sacrifice, by the god of gods who holds the trident,

268.29

by Śarva, you were created out of the essence of the entire universe. / Remember the other form of Nandaka, O destroyer of foes!

268.30

Dark as a blue lotus petal, black, destroyer of bad dreams! / Asi, Viśasana, Khaḍga, Tīkṣṇadhāra, Durāsada,

268.31

Āugarbha, Vijaya, and Dharmapāla— / these are your eight names spoken formerly by the Self-born One.

268.32

Your asterism is Kṛttikā, your guru is the god Maheśvara, / your body is gold, and your deity is Janārdana.

268.33

Protect the king, O pitiless sword, along with his army and his city!

268.33.p1

[Page 480]

268.33_2

The god is your father and grandfather; as such, protect him always!

268.34

You bestow comfort in battle, O armor, and renown today in my army. / Protect me, for I am to be protected by you, O sinless one! Homage be to you!

268.35

O drum, you cause the hearts of adversaries to tremble by your sound; / become the increaser of victory for the armies on earth!

268.36

Just as excellent elephants rejoice at the sound of a cloud, / so by your sound let there be joy bringing gladness unto us!

268.37

Just as terror arises in women by the sound of a thundercloud, / even so by your sound let our enemies tremble in battle!

268.38

These should always be worshipped with mantras and employed for victory and the like. / And consecration by aspersion with a blanket of clarified butter, Viṣṇu, and the rest [should be performed] each year.

268.39

The consecration by aspersion of the king should be performed by the astrologer and the family priest. //39
