Agni said:
I shall describe initiation and other rites after laying down [the diagram] on a lotus filled with lions and vajras.

'He he huti vajradanta puru puru lulu lulu garja garja, here, obeisance to the lion-throne.'

310.1_2

There should be four transverse and four upward-running lines, forming a square.

310.2

The wise man should make compartments divided into nine parts.
The compartments positioned in the cardinal directions should be taken; those in the intermediate directions one should eliminate.

310.3

Outside, at the corners of the compartments, eight outer lines are taught.
Outside of the outer compartment, one should bring them into the middle.

310.4

The central prong of the vajra [is formed by] dividing the outer line in half.
The outer line should be curved; the wise man should make it double-bent.

310.5

The central compartment should be a lotus with a radiant yellow pericarp.
Drawing with black powder, the tips of the thunderbolts and swords point upward.

310.6

Outside, however, there is a square marked with vajra enclosures.
At the doorway the mantrin should place four vajra enclosures.

310.7

The left aisle should be named the lotus aisle, and it should be uniform.
The centre is red, along with the filaments; women initiated in the maṇḍala

310.8

conquer hostile realms and swiftly attain kingdom.
One should unite the icon, radiant with the praṇava, with the syllable Hūṃ.

310.9

Uttering the root vidyā situated in air and ether, O twice-born,
one should worship it on the pericarp once again with the first [seed-syllable].

310.10

Thus, circumambulating and worshipping each seed-syllable from the beginning,
the limbs of the vidyā are in the middle of the petals, five from the south-east to the south-west.

310.11

In the centre is the eye, the weapon in the directions, and the protection on the secret limbs.
The oblations stand on the filaments on the left and right sides.

310.12

Five by five are to be worshipped; one should worship each with its own mantra.
One should place the eight guardians of the worlds outside, in the central maṇḍala.

310.13

Mounted on the fire-consonant, followed by the sixth vowel,
and enveloped by the fifteenth, one should combine them with their respective names.

310.14

One should swiftly worship upon the lion in the pericarp with perfumes and other offerings for prosperity.

One should surround it with eight jars consecrated with one hundred and eight recitations of the mantra.

310.15

Having recited the mantra eight thousand times, [and] a tenth of that for the limb mantras,
one should perform a fire oblation in the fire-pit and kindle it with the fire-mantra.

310.16

One should deposit the fire with the heart mantra, meditating on the Śakti residing within the fire.
One should offer oblations for the conception, the rite for procuring a male child, and the birth-rite.

310.17

With the heart mantra, one hundred [oblations generate the fire]; one should produce the flame in the secret limb.
Through the full oblation of the vidyā, the fire of Śiva becomes ignited.

310.18

One should offer oblations with the root mantra one hundred times, and one tenth [of that] for each limb.
One should then make an offering to the Goddess, and then lead the disciple inside.

Equipped with the limbs of the vidyā, one should unite him to the limbs of the vidyā.

310.20

One should make the disciple cast a flower and lead him to the fire-pit.
With barley, grains, sesame, and clarified butter, one should offer a hundred oblations with the root vidyā.

310.21

First an oblation for the plant state, after that for the reptile state,
and the states of bird, wild animal, domestic beast, human, and the state of Brahmā,

310.22

and the state of Viṣṇu, and the state of Rudra; at the end there should be a full oblation.
By that single oblation, the disciple becomes initiated.

310.23

In this way qualification is attained. Hear now concerning liberation.
When the mantrin stands upon Mount Meru, established in the state of Sadāśiva,

310.24

and, composed, offers in the Supreme one thousand non-action-actions,
by that full oblation the yogin is not smeared by merit or demerit.

310.25

He goes to liberation, the supreme abode from which, having gone, one does not return.
Just as water poured into water is water, so is the embodied soul in the Supreme.

310.25.p1

:p 142

310.26

He should perform the consecration by aspersion with jars, enjoying victory, kingship, and all things.
A young virgin and a Brahmin woman should be worshipped, and he should give a sacrificial fee to the guru and others.

310.27

Performing worship day after day, one should sacrifice one thousand times.
Through oblations of sesame, clarified butter, and bdellium, the goddess Śrī becomes the granter of desires.

310.28

She grants abundant worldly enjoyments and whatever else one desires.
By reciting one hundred thousand syllables, one becomes the master of hidden treasures.

310.29

With twice that number kingship is attained; with three times, a yakṣiṇī;
with four times, the state of Brahmā; then the station of Viṣṇu.

310.30

With six times, great supernatural power; with a single hundred thousand, one destroys sins.
Reciting ten times for purification of the body; from a hundred times comes the fruit of bathing in a sacred ford.

310.31

On a cloth, or on an image, or on a raised ground one should worship Tvaritā.
A hundred, a thousand, and ten thousand are proclaimed for recitation and fire oblation.

310.32

Having recited thus according to rule, one should offer one hundred thousand oblations
with the meat of a buffalo, goat, or ram, or of a human, or with bdellium,

310.33

with sesame, barley, and parched grain, rice, wheat, mangoes,
and bilva fruits mixed with clarified butter; having made the fire oblation, one should observe the votive observance.

310.34

Armed at midnight, bearing sword, bow, arrows, and the like,
clothed in a single garment that is variegated, or red, yellow, black,

310.35

or blue, one should worship the Goddess with those very things.
The wise man should go to the southern quarter and offer a bali at the doorway.
