36.1

Agni said: / Having bathed in the morning and worshiped the door-guardians, / and having entered a secluded place, he should draw forth and take up

36.2

the material previously consecrated preliminarily—cloth, ornament, and perfume. / Having removed all the remnants of previous offerings and installed the deity, he should worship [Him]

36.3

with the five nectars, herbal decoctions, and pure scented waters. / Then he should offer the previously consecrated cloth, perfume, and flowers.

36.4

Having made offerings in the fire as in the daily rite, he should pray to the deity and bow. / Having surrendered the rite to the God, he should perform the occasional worship.

36.5

He should pray to the door-guardians, Viṣṇu's jar, the vardhanī vessel, and Hari. / With the mantra "ato devā..." and with the root mantra on the jar:

36.6

"O Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, salutation to you! Accept this sacred cord

for the sake of purification, which grants the fruit of a full year of worship!

36.7

Make pure today whatever evil deed has been done by me! / May I become pure, O God, O Lord of the gods, by your grace!"

36.8

Having sprinkled the sacred cord and himself with the heart mantra and others, / and having sprinkled Viṣṇu's jar, he should go into the presence of the God.

36.9

He should give a sacred cord to himself and release the protective thread: / "Receive, O Lord, this sacred thread fashioned by me,

36.10

for the fulfillment of rites, so that no fault may accrue to me!" / [He should offer] a sacred cord to the door-guardians, the seat, the teacher, and the principal [deities].

36.11

And [he should present] the smallest [thread] and so forth to the deity, and the garland of forest flowers with the root mantra; / he should offer the sacred threads beginning with the heart and ending with Viṣvaksena.

36.12

Having offered into the fire, having worshiped the sacred thread for those who dwell in the fire, beginning with Viṣṇu, / he should give the final full oblation with the root mantra for the sake of expiation.

36.13

Or a hundred and eight [oblations], then with the five Upaniṣads; / with garlands of gems and corals, with mandāra blossoms and other flowers:

36.14

"May this yearly worship belong to you, O you whose banner is Garuḍa! / Just as, O Lord, the garland of forest flowers and the Kaustubha [gem] are always on your heart,

36.15

so too bear the threads of the sacred thread and the worship upon your heart. / Whatever has been done intentionally or unintentionally in the ritual worship of my vow,

36.16

may that become completely fulfilled for me according to rule despite the obstacle of omission." / Having prayed, bowed, and asked forgiveness, he should then place the sacred thread upon [his own] head.

36.17

Having offered an oblation, he should satisfy the Vaiṣṇava guru with sacrificial fees;

[and] the brahmins with food, garments, and other gifts, for a day or even a fortnight.

36.18

And taking off the sacred thread at the time of bathing, he should offer it [again]; / he should give unrestricted food and other provisions, and then eat himself.

36.19

Having performed worship on the day of dismissal, he should dismiss the sacred threads: / "Having performed this yearly worship of mine according to rule,

36.20

go now, O sacred thread, dismissed to the world of Viṣṇu!" / Having worshiped between Soma and Īśa, indeed Viṣvaksena and to him
