5.1
Agni said: / I shall relate the Rāmāyaṇa as it was told of old by Nārada / to Vālmīki, just as it was recited, bestowing worldly enjoyment and liberation.
5.2
Nārada said: / From Viṣṇu's navel-lotus was born Brahmā; Brahmā's son was Marīci; / from Marīci came Kaśyapa; from him the Sun; from him Vaivasvata Manu;
5.3
then from him likewise Ikṣvāku; in his lineage was Kakutstha; / Kakutstha's [son] was Raghu; from him Aja; then Daśaratha.
5.4
For the purpose of slaying Rāvaṇa and others, Hari himself became fourfold. / From King Daśaratha, Rāma was born of Kauśalyā.
5.5
The son Bharata was born of Kaikeyī, and Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna / were born of Sumitrā, by means of the milk-rice distributed to them by Ṛṣyaśṛṅga,
5.6
which was consumed upon the completion of the sacrifice; and Rāma and his brothers were like their father. / To remove obstacles to his sacrifice, the king was solicited by Viśvāmitra;
5.7
he sent forth Rāma along with Lakṣmaṇa in company with the sage.

[Page 10]
5.7_2
Rāma went, was instructed in missiles and weapons, and brought about Tāḍakā's end.
5.8
With the human missile, he sent Mārīca far away in a swoon; / and the mighty one slew Subāhu, the destroyer of the sacrifice, along with his force.
5.9
Dwelling in Siddhāśrama, he went together with Viśvāmitra and others, / along with his younger brother, to the sacrifice of the king of Mithilā, in order to see the bow.
5.10
By means of Śatānanda, Viśvāmitra's greatness / was related to Rāma, and that sage was honored by the king at the sacrifice.
5.11
He drew the bow and broke it with ease; / and Janaka gave his daughter Sītā, not born of a womb,
5.12
whose bride-price was valor, to Rāma; and Rāma too, when his father and others had arrived, / married that daughter of Janaka, and Lakṣmaṇa [married] Urmilā.
5.13
Śrutakīrti and Māṇḍavī, the daughters of Kuśadhvaja, / the younger brother of Janaka—both these girls
5.14
Śatrughna and Bharata married. Highly honored by Janaka, / Rāma went, having conquered Jamadagni's son, with Vasiṣṭha and the others; / and Bharata, together with Śatrughna, returned to Ayodhyā from Yudhājit's house.
