govardhane dhṛte śaile āsārād rakṣite vraje /
go-lokād āvrajat kṛṣṇaṃ surabhiḥ śakra eva ca //
Śrī Śuka said:
When Mount Govardhana was held up and Vraja protected from the downpour,
Surabhi and Indra came from Goloka to Kṛṣṇa.
Sri Suka said:—When the Mount Govardhana was uplifted and Vraja protected from the heavy rains, Indra and Surabhi went down to Krishna from Goloka (Surabhi from the region alloted to Kamadhenu and Indra from Swarga).
10.27.2
vivikta upasaṅgamya vrīḍītaḥ kṛta-helanaḥ /
pasparśa pādayor enaṃ kirīṭenārka-varcasā //
Approaching Him in a secluded place, ashamed because he had shown disrespect,
[Indra] touched His feet with his crown that shone with the brilliance of the sun.
2. Ashamed of his conduct in disregarding Krishna, Indra approached Him when alone and touched His feet with his crown glowing like the sun.
10.27.3
dṛṣṭa-śrutānubhāvo 'sya kṛṣṇasyāmita-tejasaḥ /
naṣṭa-tri-lokeśa-mada idam āha kṛtāñjaliḥ //
Having seen and heard the power of this Kṛṣṇa of boundless splendor,
with his pride as ruler of the three worlds shattered, he spoke this with joined palms:
3. Having heard of, and directly realised, the greatness of Krishna who is of immeasurable power and rid of pride as the ruler of the worlds, Indra folded his hands and said (as follows).
10.27.4

viśuddha-sattvaṃ tava dhāma śāntaṃ tapo-mayaṃ dhvasta-rajas-tamaskam /
māyā-mayo 'yaṃ guṇa-sampravāho na vidyate te grahaṇānubandhaḥ //
Indra said:
'Your abode is pure sattva, peaceful, consisting of austerity, with passion and darkness destroyed;
this flow of the qualities consisting of creative power does not exist in You, nor does any bondage of grasping.
4. Indra said:—Thy essential nature is absolutely pure Satva, One blissful existence, embodiment of perfect wisdom (consciousness), unapproached by Rajas and Tamas. This stream of gunas produced out of Maya (the result of ignorance) (nescience) finds no place in Thee.
10.27.5
kuto nu tad-dhetava īśa tat-kṛtā lobhādayo ye 'budha-linga-bhāvāḥ /
tathāpi daṇḍaṃ bhagavān bibharti dharmasya guptyai khala-nigrahāya //
Whence indeed could their causes arise in You, O Lord—greed and the rest, which are marks of the ignorant?
Even so, the Lord wields punishment for the protection of dharma and the suppression of the wicked.
5. O Ruler! Whence could then its causes and its consequences, namely, greed and other passions, conditions characterising the ignorant, assail Thee? Still Thou, the glorious Lord, ordainest punishment in order to defend Dharma and to put down the wicked.
10.27.6
pitā gurus tvaṃ jagatām adhīśo duratyayaḥ kāla upātta-daṇḍaḥ /
hitāya cecchā-tanubhiḥ samīhase mānaṃ vidhunvan jagad-īśa-māninām //
You are the father, the guru, the sovereign ruler of the worlds,
insurmountable Time, having taken up the rod of punishment; and You act for the welfare [of all] through bodies assumed by Your own will, shattering the conceit of those who imagine themselves lords of the world.
6. Thou art the father, preceptor and the Supreme Lord of all the worlds, the inviolable Time that wields the rod of punishment. For the good of the world Thou actest assuming at Thy own will personal forms and shakest off the pride of those that fancy themselves to be the rulers of the world.
10.27.7
ye mad-vidhājñā jagad-īśa-māninas tvāṃ vīkṣya kāle 'bhayam āśu tan-madam /
hitvārya-mārgaṃ prabhajanty apasmayā īhā khalānām api te 'nuśāsanam //
Ignorant ones like me who imagine themselves lords of the world, seeing You fearless in Time, quickly cast off that conceit,
and free from pride follow the noble path; Your effort is chastisement even for the wicked.'
7. Those who, ignorant like myself, are conceited as rulers of the world, know Thee, the dauntless Lord, at a time (in an opportunity like this), get cured of their pride and all touch of haughtiness, betake themselves to the paths of the great; for Thy activity is for the punishment and correction of the wicked also.
10.27.8
sa tvaṃ mamaiśvarya-mada-plutasya kṛtāgasas te 'viduṣaḥ prabhāvam /
kṣantuṃ prabho 'thārhasi mūḍha-cetaso maivaṃ punar bhūn matir īśa me 'satī //
Therefore, O Lord, you ought to forgive me—blinded by intoxication with power, a sinner ignorant of your majesty, foolish in mind; / may my mind, O Sovereign, never again be turned toward evil.
8. O Lord, mayest Thou be pleased to forgive me who, immersed in the pride of wealth and power, ignorant of Thy greatness and destitute of discretion, have sinned against Thee. Pray that a similar wicked mind may not, O Lord, be given to Me (again).
10.27.9
tavāvatāro 'yam adhokṣajeha bhuvo bharāṇām uru-bhāra-janmanām /
camū-patīnām abhavāya deva bhavāya yuṣmac-caraṇānuvartinām //
This incarnation of yours, O Adhokṣaja, is here for the ruin of the earth’s burdens, of the commanders of armies born as heavy burdens, / O God, and for the welfare of those who follow your feet.
9. O Adhokshaja, this Avatara of Thine here (in this world), is, O blessed Lord, for the destruction of those great leaders of armies who are themselves a heavy burden and the source of many extreme miseries and for the happiness of those that seek after Thy feet.
10.27.10
namas tubhyaṃ bhagavate puruṣāya mahātmane /
vāsudevāya kṛṣṇāya sātvatāṃ pataye namaḥ //
Obeisance to you, the Lord, the Supreme Person, the Great Soul, / to Vāsudeva, to Kṛṣṇa, to the master of the Sātvatas, obeisance!
10. Salutation to Thee, the glorious Lord that dwellest in every person and art in no way limited, that art Vasudeva, Krishna and the Lord of Satvatas.
10.27.11
svacchandopātta-dehāya viśuddha-jñāna-mūrtaye /
sarvasmai sarva-bījāya sarva-bhūtātmane namaḥ //
Obeisance to him who assumes a body of his own free will, whose form is pure knowledge, / to the All, the seed of all, the inner Self of all beings!
11. Salutation to Thee that at Thy own free will assumest a body, that art constituted of absolutely pure consciousness and art everything, the seed of everything, and the indwelling controller of all creatures.
10.27.12
mayedaṃ bhagavan goṣṭha- nāśāyāsāra-vāyubhiḥ /
ceṣṭitaṃ vihate yajñe māninā tīvra-manyunā //
This was done by me, O Lord, to destroy the cowherd settlement with torrents and winds, / out of excessive wrath when my sacrifice was thwarted, proud as I was.
12. When my worship was interfered with, this was done, by me full of rage, O worshipful One, for the destruction of Gokula by means of showers and winds.
10.27.13
tvayeśānugṛhīto 'smi dhvasta-stambho vṛthodyamaḥ /
īśvaraṃ gurum ātmānaṃ tvām ahaṃ śaraṇaṃ gataḥ //
I have been favored by you, O Sovereign; my pride is shattered, my effort rendered vain. / To you, the Lord, the guru, the inner Self, I have come for refuge.
13. O Lord, I have been now favoured by Thee. I am free from my haughtiness; my efforts having been foiled, I seek protection under Thee that art the Supreme Ruler, Preceptor and Master (inner guide).

evaṃ saṅkīrtitaḥ kṛṣṇo maghonā bhagavān amum /
megha-gambhīrayā vācā prahasann idam abravīt //
Śrī Śuka said: / Being thus praised by Indra, the Lord Kṛṣṇa, / with a voice deep as a raincloud, smilingly said this to him:

mayā te 'kāri maghavan makha-bhaṅgo 'nugṛhṇatā /
mad-anusmṛtaye nityaṃ mattasyendra-śriyā bhṛśam //
The Lord said: / It was out of grace that I caused the disruption of your sacrifice, O Indra, / so that you, exceedingly intoxicated with the sovereignty of Indra, might constantly remember me.
15. The Lord said:—Indra, this interruption of thy sacrifice
was caused by Me as I was pleased to show grace unto thee, so that thou, highly intoxicated with the prosperous position of Indra, may always be put in mind of Me.
10.27.16
mām aiśvarya-śrī-madāndho daṇḍa pāṇiṃ na paśyati /
taṃ bhraṃśayāmi sampadbhyo yasya cecchāmy anugraham //
Blinded by the intoxication of wealth and lordship, one does not see me holding the rod [of chastisement] in my hand; / from prosperity I cast down him upon whom I wish to bestow grace.
16. He who is blind with the pride of wealth and power, does not see Me as wielding the rod of punishment; I pull down from his wealthy condition, him on whom I would confer My grace.
10.27.17
gamyatāṃ śakra bhadraṃ vaḥ kriyatāṃ me 'nuśāsanam /
sthīyatāṃ svādhikāreṣu yuktair vaḥ stambha-varjitaiḥ //
Depart, Śakra; may all be well with you. Carry out my command; / remain in your offices, composed and free from arrogance.
17. Go back, Indra, may you all be happy and let My commandment be duly observed; be firm in your respective positions and offices and do your duty with care and without any touch of haughtiness.
10.27.18
athāha surabhiḥ kṛṣṇam abhivandya manasvinī /
sva-santānair upāmantrya gopa-rūpiṇam īśvaram //
Then the wise Surabhi, having bowed down to Kṛṣṇa / and approached the Lord who had taken the form of a cowherd along with her offspring, spoke:
18. Then the thoughtful Surabhi bowed to Krishna and said to the Supreme Lord in the form of a Gopa, addressing herself to Him along with her kith and kin (offerings).

21. We would crown Thee our Indra; by Brahma we are so directed; Thou hast appeared on earth, O Ruler of all, to reduce the burden of the earth.
