The foremost counselor among the Vṛṣṇis was Kṛṣṇa's beloved friend,
a direct disciple of Bṛhaspati, named Uddhava, of supreme intellect.

Their minds are fixed on me, their life-breath is dedicated to me, and for my sake they have renounced their bodily concerns.
They have attained to me alone in thought—their beloved, their dearest, their very self.
And those who have renounced worldly duties for my sake, I sustain.
4. ‘They have given their mind and heart to Me: they consider Me their life and for My sake they have abandoned their relations. (They are with Me in their spirit, regarding Me as their beloved, as the highest object of their affection and as their Lord). I always support those who for My sake give up all the worldly advantages and pleasures.
10.46.5
mayi tāḥ preyasāṃ preṣṭhe dūra-sthe gokula-striyaḥ /
smarantyo 'ṅga vimuhyanti virahautkaṇṭhya-vihvalāḥ //
When I, dearest of the dear, am far away,
those women of Gokula, remembering me, O friend, swoon, overwhelmed by the yearning of separation.

With the utmost difficulty they somehow sustain their life-breath,
by means of my messages promising my return—the cowherd women whose very soul is me."
6. ‘Somehow with great difficulty, the Gopis who have set their heart and soul on Me, are supporting their life on messages of My return to them.’

smaratāṃ kṛṣṇa-vīryāṇi līlāpāṅga-nirīkṣitam /
hasitaṃ bhāṣitaṃ cāṅga sarvā naḥ śithilāḥ kriyāḥ //
As we remember Kṛṣṇa's heroic deeds, his playful sidelong glances,
his laughter, and his speech, O friend, all our activities slacken.
21. ‘O dear Uddhava, as we remember Krishna’s exploits, His sportful glances and looks, His smiles and His words, all our activities get suspended.

avadhiṣṭāṃ līlayaiva paśūn iva mṛgādhipaḥ //

just as the king of beasts kills other animals, or an elephant leader kills its foes.

aty-utkaṇṭho 'bhavat tūṣṇīṃ prema-prasara-vihvalaḥ //
Śrī Śuka said:
Remembering thus again and again, his mind attached to Kṛṣṇa,
Nanda became deeply yearning, rendered silent and overwhelmed by an outpouring of love.
27. Sri Suka said:— Thus remembering over and over Krishna’s wonderful nature and work, Nanda, whose mind was taken up with love for Krishna, became so choked up and bewildered with the flood of his affectionate feelings (tears of joy) that he remained silent.
10.46.28

nārāyaṇe 'khila-gurau yat kṛtā matir īdṛśī //
Śrī Uddhava said:
"You two are indeed the most praiseworthy of all embodied beings here, O honor-giver,
since you have fixed such devotion upon Nārāyaṇa, the guru of all.
30. Uddhava said:— “O respectable one, you too are certainly the most laudable of all that are born here with a body, for you have such conclusive knowledge of the greatness of Narayana, the father of all.
10.46.31
etau hi viśvasya ca bīja-yonī rāmo mukundaḥ puruṣaḥ pradhānam /
anvīya bhūteṣu vilakṣaṇasya jñānasya ceśāta imau purāṇau //
These two, Rāma and Mukunda, are indeed the seed and womb of the universe, the Puruṣa and Pradhāna;
pervading beings, they are the ancient masters of distinct consciousness.
31. “For these two indeed are the First Causes (the efficient and material) of the Universe, Balarama and Mukunda, being the Purusha and Matter: having entered into all beings, the two Ancient Lords rule the Jiva (the intelligent Being) distinguished in various ways and by points of difference.
10.46.32
yasmin janaḥ prāṇa-viyoga-kāle kṣanaṃ samāveśya mano 'viśuddham /
nirhṛtya karmāśayam āśu yāti parāṃ gatiṃ brahma-mayo 'rka-varṇaḥ //
If at the time of departing from life a person fixes his mind upon him for a moment, even if impure,
he casts off the store of past karma and quickly attains the supreme destination, full of Brahman and radiant like the sun.
32. “He is that Almighty Lord in whom any one, devoting his pure mind for a moment at the time of departing from life, gets rid of all touch of Karma at once, attains self-realisation, and be-
comes refulgent like the Sun and reaches the final goal.
10.46.33

bhāvaṃ vidhattāṃ nitarāṃ mahātman kiṃ vāvaśiṣṭaṃ yuvayoḥ su-kṛtyam //
In him, the cause of the self of all, in Nārāyaṇa who has assumed a mortal form for a cause,
you two have placed boundless devotional emotion, O noble one; what good deed is left for you to perform?
33. "Towards Him who is Narayana, the cause of all beings, and who for some purpose seems to be in a mortal form, you two cherish exceeding devotion, O high-souled one. Is there any meritorious thing yet to be done by you both?
10.46.34
āgamiṣyaty adīrgheṇa kālena vrajam acyutaḥ /
priyaṃ vidhāsyate pitror bhagavān sātvatāṃ patiḥ //
Acyuta will return to Vraja before long;
the Lord, master of the Sātvatas, will bring joy to his parents.
34. "At no distant date the glorious Achyuta, the Lord of Satvatas, will visit Vraja and do unto His parents what is most desired by them.

hatvā kaṃsaṃ raṅga-madhye pratīpaṃ sarva-sātvatām /
yad āha vaḥ samāgatya kṛṣṇaḥ satyaṃ karoti tat //
Having slain Kaṃsa in the midst of the arena, that adversary of all Sātvatas,
Kṛṣṇa will make true the promise he made upon coming to you.
35. "What, after slaying Kamsa, the enemy of Satvatas, Krishna told in the midst of all Satvatas on the arena, He will certainly fulfil.
10.46.36
mā khidyataṃ mahā-bhāgau drakṣyathaḥ kṛṣṇam antike /
antar hṛdi sa bhūtānām āste jyotir ivaidhasi //
Do not despair, O fortunate ones; you will see Kṛṣṇa nearby.
He resides within the heart of living beings like fire within firewood.
36. "Do not get troubled, O fortunate ones, you will see Krishna presently by your side: He is in the heart of all beings, even as fire in every piece of wood.
10.46.37
na hy asyāsti priyaḥ kaścin nāpriyo vāsty amāninaḥ /
nottamo nādhamo vāpi sa-mānasyāsamo 'pi vā //
For him, who is devoid of ego, no one is dear, nor is anyone disliked;
no one is superior or inferior, nor equal to him who looks upon all equally.
37. "Indeed there is none (highly) beloved of Him or who is not beloved of Him, for, He has no attachments and is equal to all: there is none superior or inferior or unequal, to Him who is equal (to all).
10.46.38
na mātā na pitā tasya na bhāryā na sutādayaḥ /
nātmīyo na paraś cāpi na deho janma eva ca //
He has no mother, no father, no wife, no sons or other relations;
none belongs to him, none is a stranger, nor does he have a physical body or birth.
38. "He has no mother, no father, no wife, no children, nor other relations whom He calls His own, or who is His enemy: He is not invested with a corporeal body and has no birth at all.
10.46.39
na cāsya karma vā loke sad-asan-miśra-yoniṣu /
krīḍārthaṃ so 'pi sādhūnāṃ paritrāṇāya kalpate //
Nor does he have any karma in this world across good, bad, or mixed wombs;
yet, for the purpose of play, he appears for the protection of the virtuous."
39. "He has no work to do in the world, through bodies born of good, bad or mixed classes; He only reveals Himself for the sake of sport and for the protection of the righteous.
10.46.40
sattvaṃ rajas tama iti bhajate nirguṇo guṇān /
krīḍann atīto 'pi guṇaiḥ sṛjaty avan hanty ajaḥ //
Though devoid of qualities, the unborn Lord assumes the qualities of purity, passion, and darkness;
playing, though transcending the qualities, He creates, preserves, and destroys through them.
40. "The Unborn Lord, though not touched or affected by the gunas, associates Himself with the gunas known as Satva, Rajas and Tamas and choosing to support, though He is far above all sport, He creates, protects and destroys by means of those gunas.
10.46.41
yathā bhramarikā-dṛṣṭyā bhrāmyatīva mahīyate /
citte kartari tatrātmā kartevāhaṃ-dhiyā smṛtaḥ //
Just as to the vision of one who is spinning round the earth itself seems to spin,
so when the mind is the active agent, the self within it is thought by ego-intellect to be the agent.
41. "Just as to the eye that is rolling, the whole earth seems to roll, so while the mind is active the Atman therein is taken to be an agent, by virtue of Ahankara.
10.46.42
yuvayor eva naivāyam ātmajo bhagavān hariḥ /
sarveṣām ātmajo hy ātmā pitā mātā sa īśvaraḥ //
This Lord Hari is not merely your son;
He is indeed the son, the self, the father, the mother, and the Lord of all.
42. "Not only to you, but to all, the glorious Hari is a son, a master, (Self), father, mother and the Supreme Ruler.

Whatever is seen or heard, past, present, or future, stationary or moving, vast or minute—
43. “There is no existence seen or heard of in the past, present or future, immobile or mobile, great or small, that can be said to be without the presence of Achyuta: He is the all and the real thing.
10.46.43

In this way, O King, the night passed as Nanda and Kṛṣṇa's follower spoke together.
Rising, lighting lamps, and worshipping the household deities, the cowherd women churned the curds.
44. “The whole night thus passed away when Nanda and Krishna’s attendant were thus conversing, O king. The Gopis rose (early morning), stirred the lights, decorated and worshipped their threshold and churned the curd.

They shone brightly with gems lit by the lamps, rows of bracelets on their arms as they pulled the ropes,
their faces flushed with red kuṅkuma on cheeks gleaming with earrings, while their hips, breasts, and necklaces moved.
45 & 46. With jewels made lustrous by the lights as they pulled to and fro the ropes of the churning rod with bracelets on their hands, with their hips and full breasts and wreaths of pearls shaken, the cheeks brightened by the radiance of their ear-rings and with their foreheads red with Kunkuma, they shone, the sound of the singing Vraja women who celebrated in loud vioce the deeds of Krishna of lotus-like eyes rose into the skies, mixed with the noise of their churning the curd, by which all inauspiciousness in every direction became dissipated.
10.46.46

dadhnaś ca nirmanthana-śabda-miśrito nirasyate yena diśām amaṅgalam //
The sound of the women of Vraja loudly singing of the Lotus-eyed Lord touched heaven,
mingled with the sound of churning curds, by which the inauspiciousness of all directions is dispelled.
10.46.47

dṛṣṭvā rathaṃ śātakaumbhaṃ kasyāyam iti cābruvan //
When the blessed sun arose, the dwellers of Vraja, seeing a golden chariot
at the door of Nanda's house, said, "Whose is this?"
47. When the Sun rose, the residents of Vraja saw the golden car at the gates of Nanda’s mansion (Vraja) and enquired whose it was.
10.46.48
akrūra āgataḥ kiṃ vā yaḥ kaṃsasyārtha-sādhakaḥ /
yena nīto madhu-purīṃ kṛṣṇaḥ kamala-locanaḥ //
"Has Akrūra come, who accomplished Kaṃsa's purpose,
by whom the lotus-eyed Kṛṣṇa was taken away to Madhupurī?"
48. Has Akrura (again) come, who accomplished the purpose of Kamsa and by whom our Krishna of lotus-like eyes was taken to Mathura?
10.46.49
kiṃ sādhayiṣyaty asmābhir bhartuḥ prītasya niṣkṛtim /
tataḥ strīṇāṃ vadantīnām uddhavo 'gāt kṛtāhnikaḥ //
"Will he now accomplish with our bodies an offering of expiation for his pleased master?"
While the women were thus speaking, Uddhava arrived, having performed his morning rituals.
49. What purpose does he mean to gain by us? How does he mean to recompense us for separation from the Lord? When the women were talking like this, Uddhava came in after finishing his daily duties.
