punaḥ sa papraccha tam udyatāñjalir na cātitṛpto viduro dhṛta-vrataḥ //
Śrī Śuka said:
Having heard the narration of Hari, whose form was the cosmic boar, related by the son of Kuṣāru,
Vidura, of steadfast vows, his hands joined in reverence and still not satiated, questioned him again.
1. Sri Suka said :— "Having heard the story of Hari in relation to His Varaha avatara, told by Maitreya, Vidura who made it his vow to listen more and more to such stories and was not satisfied, again requested him with folded hands as follows :—

/0 vidura uvāca
tenaiva tu muni-śreṣṭha hariṇā yajña-mūrtinā /
ādi-daityo hiraṇyākṣo hata ity anuśuśruma //
Vidura said:
Indeed, O best of sages, we have heard that by that very Hari,
whose form is the sacrifice, the primal Daitya Hiraṇyākṣa was slain.
2. Vidura said :— "O great sage, we have been told that Hiranyaksha the early Daitya was slain by Hari in the form of a boar—a form which is the embodiment of sacrifices".
3.14.3
tasya coddharataḥ kṣauṇīṃ sva-daṃṣṭrāgreṇa līlayā /
daitya-rājasya ca brahman kasmād dhetor abhūn mṛdhaḥ //
And while he was lifting the earth in divine play with the tip of his tusk,
for what reason, O brāhmaṇa, did a battle take place with that king of the Daityas?
3. When the Lord as in sport lifted the earth with the ends of his tusks, what led to the fight with that king of Daityas, O sage.
3.14.4
śraddadhānāya bhaktāya brūhi taj-janma-vistaram /
ṛṣe na tṛpyati manaḥ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me //
Tell it in detail to a faithful devotee, from his birth onwards;
O sage, my mind is not satiated, for my curiosity is immense.

sādhu vīra tvayā pṛṣṭam avatāra-kathāṃ hareḥ /
yat tvaṃ pṛcchasi martyānāṃ mṛtyu-pāśa-viśātanīm //
Maitreya said:
Well asked, O hero, is this narration of Hari's incarnation,
since you inquire about that which cuts away the snare of death for mortals;
4. Maitreya said :—" O heroic one, most worthy is the enquiry; for thou desirest me to tell the story of Hari's avatara which cuts off the noose of death in the case of mortals.
3.14.6
yayottānapadaḥ putro muninā gītayārbhakaḥ /
mṛtyoḥ kṛtvaiva mūrdhny aṅghrim āruroha hareḥ padam //
sung by the sage, by which the child, the son of Uttānapāda,
placing his foot on the head of death itself, ascended to Hari's abode.
5. By that story told by the sage the child of Uttanapada Dhruva set his foot on the head of Death and ascended to the place of Hari.
3.14.7
athātrāpītihāso 'yaṃ śruto me varṇitaḥ purā /
brahmaṇā deva-devena devānām anupṛcchatām //
Now, regarding this matter, a history has been heard by me, related long ago
by Brahmā, the god of gods, when questioned by the gods.
6. In this connection, I have also heard an illustrative story of true events told in ancient times by Brahman, the god of gods, in reply to the gods who made the enquiry.
3.14.8
ditir dākṣāyaṇī kṣattar mārīcaṃ kaśyapaṃ patim /
apatya-kāmā cakame sandhyāyāṃ hṛc-chayārditā //
Diti, daughter of Dakṣa, O Kṣattṛ, desirous of offspring and afflicted by desire in her heart,
longed for her husband Kaśyapa, son of Marīci, at the twilight hour.
7. O Vidura, on a certain evening, urged by passion and by the desire for children, Diti, the daughter of Daksha, solicited the company of her husband, Kasyapa, the son of Marichi.
3.14.9
iṣṭvāgni-jihvaṃ payasā puruṣaṃ yajuṣāṃ patim /
nimlocaty arka āsīnam agny-agāre samāhitam //
As the sun was setting, [she approached him] seated in the sacrificial hall with a concentrated mind,
having worshipped with milk the Fire-tongued Person, the master of the Yajus formulas.
8. Her husband who at sunset was engaged in contemplation in the shrine of fire after having worshipped with milk, Vishnu the Lord of sacrifices whose tongue is Agni.

/0 ditir uvāca
eṣa māṃ tvat-kṛte vidvan kāma ātta-śarāsanaḥ /
dunoti dīnāṃ vikramya rambhām iva mataṅgajaḥ //
Diti said:
This Kāma, with bow in hand, O wise one, on your account
afflicts me, miserable, having overpowered me as an elephant overpowers a plantain tree.
9. Diti said:—"O sage, this Manmatha harasses my pitiable self with the bow in his hand, and that on your account, just as an elephant tosses a plantain tree which he may sieze.
3.14.11
tad bhavān dahyamānāyāṃ sa-patnīnāṃ samṛddhibhiḥ /
prajāvatīnāṃ bhadraṃ te mayy āyuṅktām anugraham //
Therefore, toward me who am burning with envy at the prosperity of my co-wives
who have children, let your honor—may you be blessed—extend favor.
10. Therefore may you be pleased to show grace unto me who am distressed in the midst of thy other wives who are prosperous and blessed with children.
3.14.12
bhartary āptorumānānāṃ lokān āviśate yaśaḥ /
patir bhavad-vidho yāsāṃ prajayā nanu jāyate //
The renown of women who have gained great respect from their husband enters all the worlds;
for a husband such as you is indeed reborn through his progeny.
11. The fame of women who are respected of their husbands stands high in the world, and of those to whom the husband like you is born as the son.
3.14.13
purā pitā no bhagavān dakṣo duhitṛ-vatsalaḥ /
kaṃ vṛṇīta varaṃ vatsā ity apṛcchata naḥ pṛthak //
Long ago our father, the lord Dakṣa, affectionate toward his daughters,
asked us each separately: 'My children, whom do you choose as your husband?'
12. Formerly, O sage, our worshipful father Daksha most affectionate to his daughters asked us severally :—" O Daughters, whom do you choose for your husband? "
3.14.14
sa viditvātmajānāṃ no bhāvaṃ santāna-bhāvanaḥ /
trayodaśādadāt tāsāṃ yās te śīlam anuvratāḥ //
Knowing the inclination of us, his daughters, he who cared for offspring
gave thirteen of them, who were devoted to your noble character, to you.
13. Desirous of extending his race he perceived the inclination of his daughters who liked you intensely for your character, and to you he gave us all, thirteen in number.
3.14.15
atha me kuru kalyāṇaṃ kāmaṃ kamala-locana /
ārtopasarpaṇaṃ bhūmann amoghaṃ hi mahīyasi //
Therefore fulfill my auspicious desire, O lotus-eyed one;
for approaching a great person when afflicted, O mighty one, is never in vain.
14. O auspicious one, be therefore pleased to grant my wish , O sage having lotus-like eyes ; for the distressed do not in vain, O perfect one, resort to the great.
3.14.16
iti tāṃ vīra mārīcaḥ kṛpaṇāṃ bahu-bhāṣiṇīm /
pratyāhānunayan vācā pravṛddhānaṅga-kaśmalām //
Thus to her, O hero—wretched, speaking much,
her mind clouded by swelling passion—the son of Marīci replied, consoling her with words:
15. O heroic Vidura, in reply to her who was pitiable and was pleading much, being far overcome by developed Manmatha, Kasyapa the son of Marichi, spoke words intent upon consoling (conciliating) her.
3.14.17
eṣa te 'haṃ vidhāsyāmi priyaṃ bhīru yad icchasi /
tasyāḥ kāmaṃ na kaḥ kuryāt siddhis traivargikī yataḥ //
I shall do what is dear to you, O timid one, whatever you wish;
who would not satisfy the desire of her from whom comes the attainment of the three ends of life?
16. O fearful one, here am I to grant thy wish whatever it may be—who would not grant the desire of one by whose help the three-fold purposes of man are accomplished ?
3.14.18
sarvāśramān upādāya svāśrameṇa kalatravān /
vyasanārṇavam atyeti jala-yānair yathārṇavam //
Supporting all stages of life through his own stage of life, the householder with a wife
crosses over the ocean of misfortune, just as one crosses the sea with seafaring vessels.
17. He who has a good wife takes by virtue of his Asrama along with him the people of other asramas as well and crosses the sea of misery even as one does the sea by means of a ship.
3.14.19
yām āhur ātmano hy ardhaṃ śreyas-kāmasya mānini /
yasyāṃ sva-dhuram adhyasya pumāṃś carati vijvaraḥ //
She whom they call the half of the self of him who desires the highest good, O proud lady,
upon whom placing his burden, a man moves about free from fever;
18. O respectable lady, the learned say that the wife is half of the man who looks forward to prosperity ; for, having rested the burden on her the man gets on, free from the fever of anxiety.
3.14.20
yām āśrityendriyārātīn durjayān itarāśramaiḥ /
vayaṃ jayema helābhir dasyūn durga-patir yathā //
relying upon whom we can effortlessly conquer the enemies that are the senses, difficult to conquer by other stages of life,
just as a fortress commander easily conquers plunderers.
19. Depending upon her we easily conquer our enemies called the indriyas, hard to be subdued by those that belong
to the other Asramas, just as the lord of a hill-fort overcomes thieves.
3.14.21
na vayaṃ prabhavas tāṃ tvām anukartuṃ gṛheśvari /
apy āyuṣā vā kārtsnyena ye cānye guṇa-gṛdhnavaḥ //
We are not able to repay you, O mistress of the house,
even throughout a whole lifetime, nor can any others who covet good qualities.
20. O queen of the house, we are not able to do proper return to you, even though a complete life-time is vouchsafed to us ; nor can others who have excellent qualities and virtues.
3.14.22
athāpi kāmam etaṃ te prajātyai karavāṇy alam /
yathā māṃ nātirocanti muhūrtaṃ pratipālaya //
Nevertheless, I shall readily fulfill this desire of yours for progeny;
only wait for a moment, so that [the watchers] will not blame me.
21. Still I shall do everything to grant thy wish in respect of offspring, so that I may not be reproached by the world. Only wait for an hour.
3.14.23
eṣā ghoratamā velā ghorāṇāṃ ghora-darśanā /
caranti yasyāṃ bhūtāni bhūteśānucarāṇi ha //
This is the most terrible hour, terrible and terrible to behold,
in which the spirits, the followers of the Lord of spirits, roam about.
22. This is the most horrible of hours when everything looks very fearful indeed, and at this hour the Spirits who are the attendants of Rudra wander about.
3.14.24
etasyāṃ sādhvi sandhyāyāṃ bhagavān bhūta-bhāvanaḥ /
parīto bhūta-parṣadbhir vṛṣeṇāṭati bhūtarāṭ //
At this twilight, O virtuous woman, the Lord who fosters the spirits,
surrounded by his assemblies of spirits, wanders upon his bull, the king of spirits.
23. Further, O chaste lady, at this hour in the evening the glorious Siva, the creator of beings and the lord of spirits goes about on the back of the bull, surrounded by a retinue of spirits.
3.14.25
śmaśāna-cakrānila-dhūli-dhūmra- vikīrṇa-vidyota-jaṭā-kalāpaḥ /
bhasmāvaguṇṭhāmala-rukma-deho devas tribhiḥ paśyati devaras te //
His mass of matted locks, gleaming, scattered and smoky with the dust of cremation-whirlwinds,
his body of pure gold covered with ashes—that god, your brother-in-law, looks on with three eyes.
24. With his brilliant jatas scattered over, and filled with dust by the whirlwind of Smasana, with his pure golden body covered with ashes, the god Siva my brother is as witnessing with his three eyes.
3.14.26
na yasya loke sva-janaḥ paro vā nātyādṛto nota kaścid vigarhyaḥ /
vayaṃ vratair yac-caraṇāpaviddhām āśāsmahe 'jāṃ bata bhukta-bhogām //
To him there is no kinsman or stranger in the world, none especially honored and none despised;
by our vows we desire that unmanifest nature, discarded by his feet, whose pleasures have already been enjoyed [by him]!
25. In the world there is no one who is a kinsman to him or who is not ; none the special object of his favour or censure ; we by means of our vows wish for and value as a great fortune the very Maya whose blessings have been already enjoyed and spurned.
3.14.27
yasyānavadyācaritaṃ manīṣiṇo gṛṇanty avidyā-paṭalaṃ bibhitsavaḥ /
nirasta-sāmyātiśayo 'pi yat svayaṃ piśāca-caryām acarad gatiḥ satām //
Whose blameless conduct the wise praise when desiring to pierce the veil of ignorance,
and who, although devoid of any equal or superior, himself practiced the behavior of a goblin—he, the refuge of the virtuous!
26. The wise who wish to break through the screen of Avidya sing his faultless work ; for though he has neither an equal nor one higher than himself, he who is the goal of the righteous adopted of his own accord the vow of Pisacha life.
3.14.28
hasanti yasyācaritaṃ hi durbhagāḥ svātman-ratasyāviduṣaḥ samīhitam /
yair vastra-mālyābharaṇānulepanaiḥ śva-bhojanaṃ svātmatayopalālitam //
Unfortunate people indeed laugh at his conduct, ignorant of the intention of him who delights in his own self,
while with garments, garlands, ornaments, and ointments they pamper that which is dog's food as their own self.
27. The unfortunate people who do not understand the purpose of His activity laugh at the deeds of the Absolute Lord, and on the other hand, this body, the-food of hounds, is caressed, as if it were their very self, with clothes, flowers, ornaments, and pigments.
3.14.29
brahmādayo yat-kṛta-setu-pālā yat-kāraṇaṃ viśvam idaṃ ca māyā /
ājñā-karī yasya piśāca-caryā aho vibhūmnaś caritaṃ viḍambanam //
Brahmā and others are the guardians of the boundaries established by him, he is the cause of this universe, and Māyā
is his obedient servant; his goblin-like conduct is mere pretense—ah, the conduct of the limitless Lord!
28. Brahma and other gods are those that watch and keep the bounds He has set. This universe is a thing of which He is the cause, and Maya is His servant, doing His bidding; and this behaviour like that of a Pisacha on the part of the Perfect Being is an inexplicable show.

saivaṃ saṃvidite bhartrā manmathonmathitendriyā /
jagrāha vāso brahmarṣer vṛṣalīva gata-trapā //
Maitreya said:
Though thus advised by her husband, with her senses agitated by passion,
she seized the garment of the brāhmaṇa sage, shameless like an unchaste woman.
29. Maitreya said:—"Though she was thus well advised by her lord, she siezed the Brahmana sage by the garment quite like a common woman without the feeling of shyness, her senses being completely confounded by Manmatha.
3.14.31
sa viditvātha bhāryāyās taṃ nirbandhaṃ vikarmaṇi /
natvā diṣṭāya rahasi tayāthopaviveśa hi //
Then, knowing his wife's insistence on an improper act,
he bowed to destiny and reclined with her in private.
30. He saw the compulsion of his wife towards a prohibited act and bowed to the decree of Providence and in privacy he sat down with her.
3.14.32
athopaspṛśya salilaṃ prāṇān āyamya vāg-yataḥ /
dhyāyañ jajāpa virajaṃ brahma jyotiḥ sanātanam //
Then, having touched water, controlling his breaths and restraining his speech,
he meditated upon and chanted the taintless Brahman, the eternal light.
31. Then he bathed in water, controlled his breath and speech, repeated the pure vedic syllables, meditating on the eternal Light.
3.14.33
ditis tu vrīḍitā tena karmāvadyena bhārata /
upasaṅgamya viprarṣim adho-mukhy abhyabhāṣata //
Ashamed by that reprehensible act, O Bhārata,
Diti approached the brahmin sage, her face cast down, and spoke:
32. O descendant of Bharata, Diti was now ashamed of the sin arising from her conduct, and approaching the brahman sage and with her face cast down she spoke as follows:—

O brahmin, may the foremost among beings not slay this embryo of mine—
Rudra, the lord of living beings, against whom I have committed an offense!
33. I pray that the Lord of the Bhutas may not destroy the being in my womb. For Rudra is the protector of beings towards whom I have done a sinful act.
3.14.35
namo rudrāya mahate devāyogrāya mīḍhuṣe /
śivāya nyasta-daṇḍāya dhṛta-daṇḍāya manyave //
Obeisance to the mighty Rudra, the fierce god who pours down blessings,
to Śiva, who lays aside the rod of punishment yet wields the rod of anger!
34. I bow to the great god Siva who is Rudra (the remover of affliction, (Ugra of irresistible nature), the bestower of desired blessings and of perfect happiness (to those who have no desires), and he in fact wields no weapons, punishes the wicked and he is anger in person in the time of destruction.
3.14.36
sa naḥ prasīdatāṃ bhāmo bhagavān urv-anugrahaḥ /
vyādhasyāpy anukampyānāṃ strīṇāṃ devaḥ satī-patiḥ //
May that formidable Lord be gracious unto us, he whose mercy is vast—
the god, the husband of Satī, who shows compassion even to the wives of hunters.
35. May the glorious Siva, full of graciousness, my sister's husband, the lord of Sati, be pleased to pardon us women who are considered fit to be pitied even by (the hard-hearted) hunter.

Seeing her trembling as she prayed for the welfare of her offspring in this world,
the Prajāpati, having finished his evening rites, spoke to his wife:
36. Maitreya said:—To Diti who was ardent to secure to her offspring the blessings of both the worlds, and who was trembling with fear, the progenitor Kasyapa having finished his _sandhya_ observances said as follows:—
3.14.38
/0 kaśyapa uvāca

Kaśyapa said:
Because of your own ritual impurity, because of the fault of the moment,
through transgressing my command, and through grave disrespect toward the gods,
37 & 38. Kasyapa said:—"On account of your mind being impure, the time being improper, your violating my command, and disregarding the gods (who are the attendants of Siva), O inauspicious woman, two wicked sons, the worst of those that are (ever) born of the womb, will be born of you. And, O wrathful one, they will frequently make the three worlds along with their protectors complain (of their atrocities).
3.14.39
bhaviṣyatas tavābhadrāv abhadre jāṭharādhamau /
lokān sa-pālāṃs trīṃś caṇḍi muhur ākrandayiṣyataḥ //
two inauspicious sons, lowest of the womb, shall be born of you, O furious woman;
they will repeatedly cause the three worlds together with their guardians to cry out in anguish.
3.14.40
prāṇināṃ hanyamānānāṃ dīnānām akṛtāgasām /
strīṇāṃ nigṛhyamāṇānāṃ kopiteṣu mahātmasu //
When innocent living beings are struck down and wretched,
when women are violated, and when the great-souled ones are angered,
39 & 40. When, by them, helpless and innocent beings are embarassed, women are seized and great souls are angered, the glorious creator of the world, the Ruler of all, will be enraged and, having come down into the world, will destroy them just as Indra the wielder of Vajra struck down the mountains.
3.14.41
tadā viśveśvaraḥ kruddho bhagavāl loka-bhāvanaḥ /
haniṣyaty avatīryāsau yathādrīn śataparva-dhṛk //
then the furious Lord of the universe, the creator and maintainer of the worlds,
will descend in an incarnation and slay them, just as the wielder of the thunderbolt struck the mountains.

41. Diti said:—"I like their death directly at the hands of the Lord who has long noble arms distinguished by Sudarsana, and only let not my sons meet death from the angered Brahmin, O Lord.
3.14.43

42. Even those that are in hell do not show favour to him who is burnt by a Brahma-danda, nor to one who is the cause of fear to all beings, whatsoever may be the class of beings in which he may be born.

3.14.45

3.14.46

Virtuous men will refine their own selves by spiritual disciplines such as freedom from enmity,
just as one refines tainted gold, in order to emulate his character.
45. In order to acquire as virtuous character like his good people will try to purify their mind (self) by the absence of hatred and other virtues, just as they purify gold of inferior carat.
3.14.47

He by whose grace this universe becomes tranquil, who is the essence of all,
that self-effulgent Lord will be pleased by his unswerving vision.
46. By his devotion not divided by that to another, is pleased the glorious Lord who is the witness of Himself, and by whose grace the universe is happy, since it consists of Himself.

He indeed will be a great Bhāgavata, a great soul, majestic, the greatest of the great;
having enthroned Vaikuṇṭha in a mind deepened through flourishing devotion, he will leave this world behind.
47. He is the great votary of the Lord of uninterrupted vision and of great glory, and he is most worshipful among the great ; and with Sri Hari firmly enthroned in his heart, purified by his ripe devotion, he will renounce the entire world.
3.14.49

Free from greed, upright in conduct, a mine of virtues, rejoicing at the prosperity of others and pained for the afflicted,

48. He will be free from the longing for worldly pleasures, constant in virtue, an abode of excellent qualities, delighted at the prosperity of other people, grieved at their sufferings, and with none to hate him, he will be a means of removing the sorrow of the world, as the moon is of the heat of the summer.

50. Maitreya said :—On hearing that her grandson will be a devotee of the Lord, Diti was greatly rejoiced ; also her heart was full of joy to know that the death of her sons would come from Sri Krishna.
