10.27.1

Śrī Śuka said:
When Mount Govardhana was held up and Vraja protected from the downpour,
Surabhi and Indra came from Goloka to Kṛṣṇa.

10.27.2

Approaching Him in a secluded place, ashamed because he had shown disrespect,
[Indra] touched His feet with his crown that shone with the brilliance of the sun.

10.27.3

Having seen and heard the power of this Kṛṣṇa of boundless splendor,
with his pride as ruler of the three worlds shattered, he spoke this with joined palms:

10.27.4

Indra said:
'Your abode is pure sattva, peaceful, consisting of austerity, with passion and darkness destroyed;
this flow of the qualities consisting of creative power does not exist in You, nor does any bondage of grasping.

10.27.5

Whence indeed could their causes arise in You, O Lord—greed and the rest, which are marks of the ignorant?
Even so, the Lord wields punishment for the protection of dharma and the suppression of the wicked.

10.27.6

You are the father, the guru, the sovereign ruler of the worlds,
insurmountable Time, having taken up the rod of punishment; and You act for the welfare [of all] through bodies assumed by Your own will, shattering the conceit of those who imagine themselves lords of the world.

10.27.7

Ignorant ones like me who imagine themselves lords of the world, seeing You fearless in Time, quickly cast off that conceit,
and free from pride follow the noble path; Your effort is chastisement even for the wicked.'

10.27.8

Therefore, O Lord, you ought to forgive me—blinded by intoxication with power, a sinner ignorant of your majesty, foolish in mind; / may my mind, O Sovereign, never again be turned toward evil.

10.27.9

This incarnation of yours, O Adhokṣaja, is here for the ruin of the earth’s burdens, of the commanders of armies born as heavy burdens, / O God, and for the welfare of those who follow your feet.

10.27.10

Obeisance to you, the Lord, the Supreme Person, the Great Soul, / to Vāsudeva, to Kṛṣṇa, to the master of the Sātvatas, obeisance!

10.27.11

Obeisance to him who assumes a body of his own free will, whose form is pure knowledge, / to the All, the seed of all, the inner Self of all beings!

10.27.12

This was done by me, O Lord, to destroy the cowherd settlement with torrents and winds, / out of excessive wrath when my sacrifice was thwarted, proud as I was.

10.27.13

I have been favored by you, O Sovereign; my pride is shattered, my effort rendered vain. / To you, the Lord, the guru, the inner Self, I have come for refuge.

10.27.14

Śrī Śuka said: / Being thus praised by Indra, the Lord Kṛṣṇa, / with a voice deep as a raincloud, smilingly said this to him:

10.27.15

The Lord said: / It was out of grace that I caused the disruption of your sacrifice, O Indra, / so that you, exceedingly intoxicated with the sovereignty of Indra, might constantly remember me.

10.27.16

Blinded by the intoxication of wealth and lordship, one does not see me holding the rod [of chastisement] in my hand; / from prosperity I cast down him upon whom I wish to bestow grace.

10.27.17

Depart, Śakra; may all be well with you. Carry out my command; / remain in your offices, composed and free from arrogance.

10.27.18

Then the wise Surabhi, having bowed down to Kṛṣṇa / and approached the Lord who had taken the form of a cowherd along with her offspring, spoke:

10.27.19

Surabhi said: / Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, O great yogin, O Self of the universe, source of the universe! / Through you, the master of the world, we have found a protector, O Acyuta!

10.27.20

You are our highest deity; you are our Indra, O Lord of the universe! / Be here for the prosperity of cows, brāhmaṇas, and gods, and whoever is virtuous.

10.27.21

We shall consecrate you as our Indra, urged on by Brahmā; / you have descended, O Self of the universe, to remove the burden of the earth.

10.27.22

Śrī Śuka said: / Having thus addressed Kṛṣṇa, Surabhi with her own milk, / and [Indra] with the waters of the heavenly Gaṅgā drawn up by the trunk of Airāvata,

10.27.23

Indra, along with the divine seers and prompted by the mothers of the gods, / anointed the descendant of Daśārha and gave him the name Govinda.

10.27.24

Coming there, Tumburu, Nārada, and others—Gandharvas, Vidyādharas, Siddhas, and Cāraṇas— / sang the renown of Hari, which wipes away the world’s impurities; the celestial women danced with delight.

10.27.25

The eminent among the hosts of gods praised him and showered wondrous rains of flowers; / the three worlds attained supreme tranquility, and cows then drenched the earth with streaming milk.

10.27.26

Rivers flowed with various sweet fluids, trees dripped with honey, / plants bore fruit without cultivation, and the mountains revealed brilliant jewels.

10.27.27

When Kṛṣṇa was anointed, O delight of the Kurus, / all these beings, dear one, even those naturally fierce, became free from enmity.

10.27.28

Having thus consecrated Govinda, the master of cows and Gokula, / Śakra, granted leave, went to heaven surrounded by the gods and other [celestials].
