10.69.1

Śrī Śuka said: / Having heard that Naraka had been slain and that all the women / were married by Kṛṣṇa alone, Nārada wished to see that.

10.69.2

“How wonderful indeed! With a single body, simultaneously and separately / in each house, he alone married sixteen thousand women!”

10.69.3

Eager in this way, the celestial seer came to see Dvāravatī, / resonant with flocks of birds and bees in flowering groves and pleasure gardens,

10.69.4

resounding with the loud calls of swans and cranes / on lakes strewn with blossoming blue water lilies, lotuses, white water lilies, and red lotuses,

10.69.5

adorned with nine hundred thousand palaces built of crystal and silver, / resembling great emeralds, furnished with gold and jewels,

10.69.6

delightful with well-arranged streets, lanes, squares, and marketplaces, halls, assemblies, and temples, / its paths, courtyards, roads, and thresholds sprinkled with water, the sun’s heat warded off by fluttering banners and flags.

10.69.7

Within it was the splendid inner palace, revered by all the guardians of the quarters, / where Tvaṣṭṛ had displayed the entirety of his skill for Hari.

10.69.8

There, adorned with sixteen thousand mansions, / he entered one great residence of the wives of Śauri.

10.69.9

It was supported by coral pillars with excellent slabs of cat’s-eye, / with walls of sapphire and a floor of unfading luster,

10.69.10

with canopies fashioned by Tvaṣṭṛ, hanging with strings of pearls, / and seats and couches of ivory, ornamented with the finest jewels,

10.69.11

graced by maidservants wearing gold necklets and fine garments, / and men in tunics and turbans, with beautiful robes and bejeweled earrings.

10.69.12

Where darkness was dispelled by the radiance of multitudes of jewel lamps, / and upon the ornamental eaves, O King, peacocks danced, crying aloud thinking it to be a cloud, / seeing the incense of aguru drift out through the latticed windows.

10.69.12.p1

In that [mansion], accompanied by thousands of maidservants equal to her in qualities, beauty, youth, and fine attire, / at all times the mistress of the house

10.69.13

The brāhmaṇa saw the Lord of the Sātvatas being fanned continually by His wife, who was attended by thousands of female servants of equal qualities, beauty, youth, and fine attire, with a chowrie fly-whisk having a handle of gold.

Beholding him, the Lord, the foremost of all upholders of dharma, rose up at once from the bed of His consort,

10.69.14

Bowed down to his feet with His crowned head, and with folded hands seated him upon His own throne.

Having washed his feet, He placed that water upon His own head, though He is the supreme spiritual teacher of the universe and the Lord of virtuous devotees;

Having washed his feet, He placed that water upon His own head, though He is the supreme spiritual teacher of the universe and the Lord of virtuous devotees;

10.69.15

For indeed, the descriptive name ‘God of the brāhmaṇas’ rightly belongs to Him alone, the water from whose feet is all the sacred bathing places.

Having worshipped the foremost of divine seers according to prescribed ordinance, the primeval seer Nārāyaṇa, the companion of Nara,

10.69.16

Addressed him in measured, nectar-sweet speech, saying: ‘O master, what may We do for you, the venerable one?’

10.69.17

Śrī Nārada said:
It is not at all surprising in You, O almighty Lord, Master of all the worlds, that You show friendship to all people and subjugation toward the wicked.

10.69.18

I have seen Your pair of feet, which grant liberation to mankind and are to be meditated upon in the heart by Brahmā and the others of unfathomable intellect;

10.69.19

Then Nārada entered another mansion belonging to a wife of Kṛṣṇa, / O dear one, wishing to understand the creative power of the master of the lords of yoga.

10.69.20

There also he saw Him playing dice with His beloved wife and Uddhava, / and was worshipped with supreme devotion through rising, offering a seat, and other respects.

10.69.21

And he was asked, as if by an ignorant person: ‘When did Your Holiness arrive? / What can incomplete beings like us do for those who are complete?’

10.69.22

‘Yet tell us, O brāhmaṇa; make this birth of ours auspicious.’ / Astounded, he stood up and went silently to another house.

10.69.23

There too he saw Govinda cuddling His infant sons; / then in another house he saw Him making preparations for a bath.

10.69.24

And in one place offering oblations into the sacrificial fires, worshipping with the five sacrifices, / feeding the twice-born, and eating what remained;

10.69.25

In another performing the twilight prayer, muttering the sacred syllable with restrained speech; / and in one place moving with sword and shield along sword-fencing courses;

10.69.26

In some place the elder brother of Gada rode about on horses, elephants, and chariots; / somewhere lying on a couch while being praised by bards;

10.69.27

Consulting in one house with ministers such as Uddhava; / in another engrossed in water-sports surrounded by courtesans and women;

10.69.28

Somewhere giving finely adorned cows to the foremost of the twice-born; / and listening to auspicious legends and Purāṇas;

10.69.29

At times laughing with His beloved wife over humorous stories at home; / in one place practicing dharma, and elsewhere wealth and pleasure;

10.69.30

Sitting alone, meditating upon the Supreme Person beyond primordial nature; / in another place serving elders with desired comforts and worship;

10.69.31

Keśava was waging war with some, and making peace elsewhere; / somewhere with Balarāma He was contemplating the welfare of the virtuous devotees;

10.69.32

Arranging in due time the marriages of His sons and daughters / with wives and husbands befitting them, accompanied by riches;

10.69.33

Upon seeing the great festivals for His children with send-offs and investitures with the sacred thread, / the people were filled with wonder at the Lord of the masters of yoga.

10.69.34

In one place worshipping all the gods with grand sacrifices; / elsewhere fulfilling religious duty by constructing wells, gardens, monasteries, and the like;

10.69.35

Somewhere engaging in hunting mounted on a Sindhu horse, / slaying there sacrificial wild beasts, surrounded by foremost Yādavas;

10.69.36

In disguise, the Lord of yoga wandered at times among His subjects, inside the inner quarters, houses, and elsewhere, / wishing to understand their feelings.

10.69.37

Then, as if smiling, Nārada spoke to Hṛṣīkeśa, / having witnessed the display of creative power in Him who had assumed human ways:

10.69.38

‘We know Your creative powers, which are hard to perceive even for illusionists, / O Soul of the lords of yoga; they have become visible through service to Your feet.

10.69.39

Permit me, O Lord, to wander through the worlds inundated with Your glory, / singing aloud of Your world-purifying divine play.’

10.69.40

The Lord said:
‘O brāhmaṇa, I am the speaker of dharma, the doer of it, and the approver of it. / Instructing this world in it, I have assumed this state, my son; do not be perplexed.’

10.69.41

Śrī Śuka said:
Thus he saw Him, the one Lord present in all the houses, / performing the purifying pious duties of householders.

10.69.42

Seeing again and again the great display of the creative power of Kṛṣṇa of boundless prowess, / the seer was filled with wonder and curiosity.

10.69.43

Thus duly honored in matters of wealth, pleasure, and dharma by Kṛṣṇa with faithful devotion, / he departed rejoicing, constantly remembering Him alone.

10.69.44

Thus following the human path, Nārāyaṇa, having assumed His potency for the good of all existence, / took delight, O dear one, enjoyed by the bashful, affectionate glances and smiles of sixteen thousand noble women.

10.69.44.p1

Whatever deeds Hari, the cause of the dissolution, origination, and maintenance of the universe, performed here, which are unmatched by any other,

10.69.45

Whoever sings, hears, or rejoices in them, O dear one, / will indeed attain devotion to the Lord, the path to liberation.
