### [4.1.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.1.2)

The king gave Ākūti to Ruci, even though she had brothers,

### [4.1.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.1.11)

The lord Manu gave Prasūti to Dakṣa, the son of Brahmā,

### [4.2.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.14)

Surrounded by ghosts and hordes of spirits in terrifying cremation grounds, / he roams like a madman, naked, with disheveled hair, laughing and weeping.

### [4.2.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.15)

Bathed in the ashes of funeral pyres, adorned with garlands of corpses and human bones, / auspicious in name only, but truly inauspicious, intoxicated and fond of drunken folk, / the master of the Pramatha hordes, whose very nature is made of mere darkness!

### [4.2.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.16)

Alas, to that lord of the mad, bereft of purity, evil-hearted, / the virtuous girl was given by me, urged by the Supreme Lord Parameṣṭhin."

### [4.2.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.17)

Maitreya said: / Having thus reviled Giriśa, who remained without opposition, / Dakṣa then touched water and, enraged, proceeded to pronounce a curse:

### [4.2.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.18)

"Let this Bhava, the lowest of the divine host, receive no share / along with the gods, Indra, Upendra, and the others, in the worship of the gods!"

### [4.2.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.19)

Though forbidden by the foremost members of the assembly, Dakṣa, having hurled the curse at Giritra, / walked out from there with his anger blazing, O son of the Kurus, and went to his own abode.

### [4.2.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.20)

Learning of the curse, Nandīśvara, the leader of Giriśa's attendants, his eyes reddened with fury, / hurled a terrible curse at Dakṣa and at those twice-born who had approved of his unspeakable words:

### [4.2.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.21)

"Whoever, regarding this mortal body, bears malice toward the Lord / who bears no malice in return—let that ignorant person of dual vision turn away from truth!

### [4.2.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.22)

Attached to deceitful duties in households through desire for vulgar pleasure, / let him amplify the system of ritual actions, his intellect corrupted by the words of the Veda.

### [4.2.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.23)

With an intellect contemplating other matters, having forgotten the nature of the self, like a beast, / excessively lustful toward women, let that Dakṣa soon have the face of a goat!

### [4.2.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.24)

Mistaking ritual action for true wisdom, dull-witted in spiritual ignorance, / let them wander in transmigration here—those who follow this despiser of Śarva!

### [4.2.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.25)

Agitated by the flowery speech of the Veda and its rich fragrance of honey, / with their minds churned up, let those haters of Hara be utterly bewildered!

### [4.2.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.26)

Let the twice-born eat anything, maintaining knowledge, asceticism, and vows merely for a livelihood, / finding delight only in wealth, the body, and the senses, roaming here as beggars!"

### [4.2.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.27)

Hearing him utter such a curse against the race of the twice-born, / Bhṛgu hurled back a counter-curse, the rod of Brahman, difficult to overcome:

### [4.2.28](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.28)

"May those who observe the vow of Bhava, and those who follow them, / become heretics, adversaries of the true scriptures.

### [4.2.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.29)

Bereft of purity, foolish-minded, wearing matted hair, ashes, and bones, / let them enter the initiation of Śiva, in which the deity is wine and liquor.

### [4.2.30](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.30)

Because you revile the Veda and the brāhmaṇas, / the barrier upholding mankind, you have taken refuge in heresy.

### [4.2.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.31)

For this is indeed the auspicious and eternal path of the worlds, / which the ancients followed, and for which Janārdana is the standard of authority.

### [4.2.32](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.32)

Having reviled that supreme and pure Veda, the eternal path of the virtuous, / go into heresy, where your deity is the king of spirits!"

### [4.2.33](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.33)

Maitreya said: / As Bhṛgu was thus uttering the curse, the Lord Bhava / departed from there with his followers, as if somewhat despondent.

### [4.2.34](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.34)

Those creators of the universe also, having conducted the sacrificial session for a thousand years, / O mighty archer, in which the supreme Hari was worshipped,

### [4.2.35](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.2.35)

having taken the concluding bath where the Gaṅgā is joined by the Yamunā, / with purified minds, all went from there to their respective abodes.

### [4.3.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.1)

Maitreya said:
While son-in-law and father-in-law thus harbored mutual enmity,
a very great span of time indeed passed by.

### [4.3.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.2)

When Dakṣa was consecrated by Brahmā, the supreme lord,
to the lordship over all the Prajāpatis, pride overtook him.

### [4.3.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.3)

Having performed the Vājapeya sacrifice and surpassed even the foremost knowers of Brahman,
he undertook that supreme sacrifice called the Bṛhaspatisava.

### [4.3.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.4)

All the brahmin seers, divine seers, ancestral fathers, and deities were present there,
after reciting prayers for good fortune, accompanied by their wives and husbands.

### [4.3.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.5)

Hearing of that great sacrificial festival of her father
from sky-dwellers conversing in the heavens,

### [4.3.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.6)

and seeing the wives of the foremost minor deities arriving from all quarters,
traveling in aerial cars with their beloved consorts, wearing golden necklaces and fine garments,

### [4.3.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.7)

with restless eyes and polished earrings, passing near her own abode,
the goddess Satī, Dakṣa's daughter, addressed her lord, the god who is the lord of spirits, out of eagerness:

### [4.3.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.8)

Satī said:
The great sacrificial festival of your father-in-law, the Prajāpati, has now indeed begun.
We too should go there, O handsome lord, if it pleases you, for these gods are going.

### [4.3.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.9)

At that \[festival\], my sisters, eager to see their kin,
will surely go with their own husbands, and I wish to accept
the gifts of honor brought along with you at that \[gathering\].

### [4.3.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.10)

There, indeed, my mind long longing for them, I shall see my sisters with their husbands,
my maternal aunts, and my affectionate mother, as well as the sacrificial banner raised by the great seers, O Mṛḍa.

### [4.3.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.11)

Within you shines this wonder composed of the three qualities,
fashioned by your own creative power, O unborn lord; yet I, a woman ignorant of the truth,
am distressed, O Bhava, and wish to see my birthplace.

### [4.3.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.12)

Look, O unborn one, even the wives of others are going in groups, adorned,
accompanied by their beloved husbands; by their moving aerial cars, white like swans,
the sky is ornamented, O blue-throated lord!

### [4.3.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.13)

How can a daughter's body not be moved upon hearing of a festive occasion at her father's house, O best of gods?
Even uninvited, one goes out of affection to the dwelling
of a husband, a spiritual guide, and the giver of one's body.

### [4.3.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.14)

Therefore, O immortal one, be gracious to me; you are compassionate and surely ought to fulfill this desire.
By you, who possess limitless vision, I was placed in half of your own self; please grant my request!

### [4.3.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.15)

The sage said:
Thus addressed by his beloved, the mountain-dweller who is dear to friends replied with a smile,
reminded of those arrow-like harsh words that pierce the vital core, which he \[Dakṣa\] had uttered in the presence of the creators of the universe.

### [4.3.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.16)

The Lord said:
What you have said, O fair one, is indeed auspicious: even uninvited, one may go to relatives,
provided their sight is not corrupted by fault-finding arising from powerful anger and false pride.

### [4.3.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.17)

By learning, austerity, wealth, bodily beauty, youth, and noble birth—
the six virtues of the good, which become the very worst in others—
when mindfulness is destroyed, arrogant men whose vision is spoiled by pride do not perceive the glory of the great.

### [4.3.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.18)

One should not go to the houses of such unstable-minded people expecting kin,
who behold arrivals with crooked intellects,
with raised eyebrows and intolerant eyes.

### [4.3.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.19)

A man is not so tormented by the arrows of enemies;
though pierced in body, he lies with an aching heart,
yet day and night he burns, struck to the vital core by the harsh words of crooked-minded relatives.

### [4.3.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.20)

Clearly, O fair-browed one, I consider you the most cherished of the daughters
of the exalted Prajāpati; nevertheless, you will receive no honor from your father,
for that man burns with grief on account of your connection to me.

### [4.3.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.21)

With a heart burning within, senses distressed by the prosperity of those
who witness the intelligence of the person, he, powerless to attain their supreme state directly,
hates them, just as the demons hate Hari.

### [4.3.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.22)

Rising to meet, showing deference, and greeting, O slender-waisted one,
are properly offered among one another by the wise in their minds to the Supreme Person
dwelling in the cave of the heart, and not to one who identifies with the physical body.

### [4.3.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.23)

Pure sattva is designated by the word 'vasudeva,' because the unconditioned person is perceived therein;
and in that sattva, the Lord Vāsudeva, Adhokṣaja, is honored by my obeisance.

### [4.3.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.24)

Therefore, your father Dakṣa, even though the giver of your body, is not to be seen by you, nor are those devoted to him, for he hates me;
O woman of lovely thighs, he insulted me, innocent as I was, with harsh words at the sacrifice of the creators of the universe.

### [4.3.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.3.25)

If you go, disregarding my word, no good will come to you from that;
when humiliation comes from one's own kin to an esteemed person, it immediately amounts to death.

### [4.4.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.1)

Maitreya said:
Having said this much, Śaṅkara fell silent, pondering indeed the destruction of his wife's body in either case;
desiring to see her kin, yet fearful of Bhava, she stepped out and stepped in, torn in two.

### [4.4.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.2)

Dejected at the thwarting of her desire to see her kin, weeping out of affection, deeply distraught with falling tears,
Bhavānī, trembling, looked in anger upon Bhava, who has no equal, as if she would burn him.

### [4.4.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.3)

Then, sighing deeply, abandoning him who in love had given her half of his own body and who is dear to the virtuous,
Satī, her mind bewildered by womanly nature, went to her parents' house with a heart burning from sorrow and rage.

### [4.4.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.4)

The attendants of the three-eyed lord, by the thousands—the yakṣas and attendants
such as Maṇimat and Mada, fearless, with the foremost of bulls ahead—swiftly followed behind that Satī as she marched with rapid strides alone.

### [4.4.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.5)

Placing her upon the foremost of bulls, decorated, they departed with her myna bird, playing ball, mirror, lotus,
white umbrella, chowrie, flower garlands, and the like, accompanied by musical singing, kettle-drums, conches, and flutes.

### [4.4.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.6)

She entered the sacrificial arena, which was filled with the slaughter of victims made resonant by the chanting of the Veda,
attended on all sides by brahmin seers and deities, and furnished with vessels made of clay, wood, iron, gold, darbha grass, and skins.

### [4.4.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.7)

When she arrived there, no one respected her, despised out of fear of the sacrificer,
except her sisters and her mother, who, showing reverence and with throats choked by tears of affection, embraced her with joy.

### [4.4.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.8)

Though offered a welcome with questions about her welfare appropriate among sisters, and respectful worship
and an excellent seat by her mother and maternal aunts, Satī did not accept them, since she was not greeted by her father.

### [4.4.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.9)

And beholding that sacrifice without a share for Rudra, and the insult offered by her father to the all-pervading lord,
and having been slighted in the assembly of the sacrifice, the supreme lady grew enraged, as if about to burn the worlds with her fury.

### [4.4.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.10)

Restraining by her own splendor the hosts of spirits who had risen up, within hearing of the whole world,
the goddess denounced the hater of Śiva, who was conceited through his labor on the smoke-filled path, with words choked with indignation:

### [4.4.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.11)

The goddess said:
In this world, he has no one who is dearer, nor anyone who is hateful, being the dear self of all embodied beings.
In him, the soul of all, who is free from enmity, who except you would find an adversary?

### [4.4.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.12)

Some virtuous people indeed see virtues even in the faults of others, but not one like you, O twice-born;
and the most exalted devotees magnify even slight virtues—yet in them you have found fault!

### [4.4.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.13)

It is no wonder that the wicked, who proclaim the corpse to be the self, continually revile the great;
their splendor is envious and already cast down by the dust of the feet of great men; that alone is fitting for them.

### [4.4.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.14)

His two-syllabled name, uttered by the tongue of men even once by chance, immediately destroys sin.
Alas, you, an un-auspicious person, hate him, Śiva, of pure fame, whose command cannot be transgressed!

### [4.4.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.15)

His lotus feet are attended by the bee-like minds of the great who seek the nectar of the aesthetic flavor of Brahman,
and he showers blessings upon the petitioner of the world; against him, the friend of the universe, you bear hostility.

### [4.4.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.16)

Do others, like Brahmā and the rest, not know that he is named Śiva, yet inauspicious according to you? Scattering their matted locks in the cremation ground,
they bear upon their heads what is cast off from the feet of him who dwells with ghosts, adorned with garlands, ashes, and human skulls.

### [4.4.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.17)

Covering both ears, one should depart if powerless, when the Lord, the protector of dharma, is assailed by unrestrained men;
if capable, one should forcefully sever the blasphemous, vile tongue, and then give up even one's life: that is dharma.

### [4.4.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.18)

Therefore I shall not maintain this body produced from you, who revile the dark-throated lord;
for vomiting is declared to be the purification of food that has been eaten in delusion, when it is contemptible.

### [4.4.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.19)

The intellect of the great sage delighting in his own realm does not follow the injunctions of the Vedas;
just as the paths of gods and humans are distinct, established in one's own dharma one should not censure another.

### [4.4.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.20)

Action is active and also contemplative, truly distinguished in the Veda and marked by dual characteristics;
these two are incompatible in a single agent at one time, and likewise action does not attach to Brahman.

### [4.4.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.21)

Father, may your paths not be pursued by us—paths not praised in sacrificial halls by those who travel the smoke-filled path,
who are satisfied with sacrificial food, embodied beings; our paths are without manifest characteristics, attended by avadhūtas.

### [4.4.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.22)

Enough, enough of this wretched birth arising from the body of you who committed an offense against Hari!
Shame has come upon me from association with an evil person; fie upon that birth which causes reproach to the great!

### [4.4.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.23)

When the Lord, whose banner bears the bull, addresses me by your family name, calling me 'Dākṣāyaṇī,' he will be deeply grieved,
his playful smile gone; therefore I shall immediately abandon this corpse born of your limbs.

### [4.4.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.24)

Maitreya said:
Having thus addressed Dakṣa at the sacrifice, O slayer of foes, she sat down silently upon the earth facing north;
having touched water, wrapped in yellow silk, she closed her eyes and entered upon the path of yoga.

### [4.4.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.25)

Having balanced the two breaths, having mastered her posture, raising the udāna breath from the navel circle,
the blameless woman gradually brought it to the heart, held it in the chest with her intellect, and led it from the throat to the middle of the eyebrows.

### [4.4.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.26)

Thus, wishing to cast off her own body, which had been repeatedly and respectfully placed upon his lap by the greatest of the great,
the resolute lady, out of anger at Dakṣa, sustained the meditation of air and fire within her limbs.

### [4.4.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.27)

Then, meditating on the nectar of the lotus feet of her husband, the spiritual teacher of the world, and on nothing else,
her body, its impurities destroyed, the virtuous lady saw, and immediately it blazed up with the fire born of absorption.

### [4.4.28](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.28)

As they beheld that great wonder in the sky and on the earth, a very great cry of 'Alas! Alas!' arose:
'Ah, the beloved goddess of the supreme deity, the virtuous Satī, has given up her life! By whom was she provoked?'

### [4.4.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.29)

'Ah, look at the great heartlessness of this Prajāpati, whose offspring are the moving and unmoving beings!
His daughter Satī, a resolute woman who constantly deserved honor, has given up her life because of his disrespect.'

### [4.4.30](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.30)

'This hard-hearted man, hostile to Brahman, will attain great infamy in the world,
for, an enemy of the Supreme Person, he did not prevent his own daughter, who was prepared to die on account of his offense.'

### [4.4.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.31)

While the people were speaking thus, seeing the wondrous relinquishment of life by Satī,
her attendants stood up with raised weapons to kill Dakṣa.

### [4.4.32](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.32)

Perceiving the fury of their attack, the venerable Bhṛgu
offered oblations into the southern fire with a sacrificial formula that slays the destroyers of sacrifice.

### [4.4.33](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.33)

While the adhvaryu priest was offering, gods arose in great power by thousands,
named the Ṛbhus, who had attained Soma by their austerities.

### [4.4.34](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.4.34)

Struck by them with firebrand weapons, blazing with the luster of Brahman,
all the Pramathas along with the Guhyakas fled in all directions.

### [4.5.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.1)

Maitreya said:
Bhava, learning from Nārada of the death of Bhavānī, who had been dishonored by the Prajāpati,
and that his army of attendants had been routed by the Ṛbhus of that sacrifice, gave way to boundless anger.

### [4.5.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.2)

Furious, with his lips tightly bitten, he, Dhūrjaṭi, tearing out a matted lock of hair
that blazed fiercely like lightning and fire, Rudra suddenly rose up, laughing with a deep roar, and dashed it upon the earth.

### [4.5.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.3)

Then \[arose\] a colossal figure touching the sky with his body, with a thousand arms, shining like a dark cloud, with three eyes like suns,
with frightful fangs, hair like blazing fire, wearing a garland of skulls, and with various weapons raised.

### [4.5.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.4)

To him, who stood with folded hands asking, 'What shall I do?', the Lord, the master of spirits, said:
'Slay Dakṣa along with his sacrifice! You are the leader of my soldiers, O Rudra, an expansion of my warrior force.'

### [4.5.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.5)

Commanded thus by the wrathful \[Śiva\], who was anger itself, he circumambulated the all-pervading god of gods; / he considered himself capable of bearing, with irresistible speed, the strength of the greatest beings, dear one.

### [4.5.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.6)

Followed by the attendants of Rudra, who were roaring loudly, he roared most terribly; / raising a trident capable of ending the ender of the world, he ran forward, his feet adorned with ringing bells.

### [4.5.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.7)

Then, observing dust in the northern direction, the sacrificial priests, the patron of the sacrifice, the assembly members, / the brahmins, and the brahmins’ wives thought: “What is this darkness? Whence has this dust arisen?”

### [4.5.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.8)

“Winds do not blow, nor are there robbers, for Prācīnabarhis of stern punishment is still alive; / cows are not being herded. Whence is this dust? Can the world now be fit for dissolution?”

### [4.5.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.bhagavata~en-mt.4.5.9)
