śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam- 151
dhanvantariruvāca /
hikrāroganidānañca vakṣye suśruta ! tacchṛṇu /
śvāsaikahetuḥ prāgrūpaṃ saṃkhyā prakṛtisaṃśrayā //
The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — [Chapter] 151.
Dhanvantari said:
And now I shall tell the etiology of the disease of hiccough, Suśruta! Listen to that.
It shares the same cause and premonitory signs as asthma; the count [of its varieties] is based on their nature.
1.151.2
hikrā bhakṣyodbhavā kṣudrā yamalā mahatīti ca /
gambhīrā ca maruttatra tvarayāyuktisevitaiḥ //
Hiccough is [of five kinds]: food-caused, minor, double, great, / and deep. There, wind [is aggravated] by food and drink taken in haste and improperly,
1.151.3
rūkṣatīkṣṇakharāśāntairannapānaiḥ prapīḍitaḥ /
karoti hikrāṃ śvasanaḥ mandaśabdāṃ kṣudhānugām //
afflicted by dry, sharp, harsh, and unsuitable foods and drinks; / respiration [then] produces a hiccough of feeble sound, accompanying hunger.
1.151.4
samaṃ sandhyānnapānena yā prayāti ca sānnajā /
āyāsātpavanaḥ kruddhaḥ kṣudrāṃ hikrāṃ pravartayet //
That which passes away evenly upon taking food and drink is 'food-caused'. / From physical exertion, angered wind brings about 'minor' hiccough.
1.151.5
jatrumūlātparisṛtā mandavegavantī hi sā /
vṛddhimāyāsato yāti bhuktamātre ca mārdabam //
Issuing from the root of the clavicle, it indeed has feeble force; / it increases through exertion and abates as soon as food is eaten.
1.151.6
cireṇa yamalairvegairyā hikrā saṃpravartate /
pariṇāmānmukhe vṛddhiṃ pariṇāme ca gacchati //
The hiccough that arises with paired paroxysms at intervals, / increases during digestion and also reaches its peak in the mouth during digestion,
1.151.7
kampayantī śiro grīvāṃ yamalāṃ tāṃ vinirdiśet /
pralāpacchardyatīsāranetraviplutajṛmbhitā //
shaking the head and the neck, one should designate as 'double'. / Accompanied by delirium, vomiting, diarrhea, watery eyes, and yawning,
1.151.8
yamalā veginī hikrā pariṇāmavatī ca sā /
dhvastabhrūśaṅkhayugmasya śrutiviplutacakṣuṣaḥ //
that 'double' hiccough is forceful and characterized by digestion. / For one whose temples and pair of brows are collapsed, whose vision and hearing are impaired,
1.151.9
stambhayantī tanuṃ vācaṃ smṛtiṃ saṃjñāṃ ca muñcatī /
tudantī mārgamāṇasya kurvatī marmaghaṭṭanam //
stiffening the body, arresting speech, causing loss of memory and consciousness, / piercing as it seeks [an exit], and striking the vital parts,
1.151.10
pṛṣṭhato namanaṃ sārṣyaṃ mahāhikrā pravartate /
mahāśūlā mahāśabdā mahāvegā mahābalā //
causing bending backward with jealousy/fretfulness, the 'great' hiccough arises, / with severe pain, loud sound, immense force, and great power.
1.151.11
pakrāśayācca nābhervā pūrvavatsā pravartate //
It originates as before, either from the intestine or the navel.
1.151.12
tadrūpā sā mahatkuryāñjṛmbhaṇāṃ gaprasāraṇam /
gambhīreṇa nidānena gambhīrā tu susādhayet //
With that form, it causes excessive yawning and stretching of the limbs. / Due to a deep etiology, however, the 'deep' [hiccough] is very difficult to cure.
1.151.13
ādye dve varjayedanye sarvaliṅgāṃ ca veginīm /
sarvasya saṃcitāmasya sthavirasya vyavāyinaḥ //
One should avoid the first two, others [with all symptoms], and the forceful one showing all signs / in a person of accumulated [morbid matter], the aged, and the excessively sexually active,
1.151.14
vyādhibhiḥ kṣīṇadehasya bhaktacchedakṛśasya ca /
sarve 'pi rogā nāśāya na tvevaṃ śāghrakāriṇaḥ //
in one whose body is wasted by diseases, and one emaciated by fasting. / Though all diseases tend to destruction, none act so swiftly
1.151.15
hikrāśvāsau yathā tau hi mṛtyukāle kṛtālayau //
as hiccough and asthma, for they have made their abode at the time of death.
1.151.15.p1
iti śrīgāruḍe mahāpurāṇe pūrvakhaṇḍe prathamāṃśākhye ācārakāṇḍe hikrānidānā nāmaikapañcāśaduttaraśatatamo 'dhyāyaḥ
Thus ends the one hundred fifty-first chapter, entitled 'Diagnosis of Hiccough', in the Ācārakāṇḍa of the first section named First Part in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
