brahmādīnāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ ca bhuktimuktipradāyakam //
The Glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — [Chapter] 240
Hari said:
O Rudra, this Garuḍapurāṇa, its essence, has been proclaimed by me to you / and to Brahmā and the others who were listening, bestowing enjoyment and liberation,
1.240.2
vidyākīrtiprabhālakṣmījayārogyādikārakam /
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādrudra sarvavitsa divaṃ vrajet //
granting learning, fame, splendour, fortune, victory, health, and more. / Whoever reads it or hears it, O Rudra, becoming all-knowing, shall go to heaven.
1.240.3
brahmovāca /
iti vyāsa mayā viṣṇoḥ purāṇaṃ muktidaṃ śrutam /
vyāsa uvāca /
śrutvaitadgāruḍaṃ puṇyaṃ brahmāsmānityuvāca ha //
Brahmā said:
"Thus, O Vyāsa, was this Purāṇa bestowing liberation heard by me from Viṣṇu."
Vyāsa said:
Having heard this auspicious Gāruḍa [Purāṇa], Brahmā indeed spoke thus to us:
1.240.4
dakṣanārada mukhyādin brahma dhyānhariṃ gataḥ /
mayāpi tubhyaṃ sūtena purāṇaṃ kathitaṃ param //
to Dakṣa, Nārada, and the other foremost sages; meditating on Brahman and Hari, he departed.
I too, as Sūta, have narrated this supreme Purāṇa to you,
1.240.5
yacchrutvā sarvavitprāptakāmo brahma phalaṃ bhavet /
viṣṇuḥ sāratamaṃprāha garuḍaṃ gāruḍaṃ tataḥ //
hearing which one becomes omniscient, attains one's desires, and obtains Brahman as the fruit.
Viṣṇu declared the essence of all to Garuḍa; then Garuḍa [proclaimed]
1.240.6
mahāsāraṃ dharmakāmadhanamokṣādidāyakam /
sūta uvāca /
śaunaka pravaraṃ proktaṃ purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ tava //
this great essence, bestowing dharma, desire, wealth, liberation, and the rest.
Sūta said:
O Śaunaka, this supreme Gāruḍa Purāṇa has been related to you,
1.240.7
yadabravītpurā vyāsaḥ sāraṃ māṃ gāruḍeritam /
vyāsaḥ śrutvā brahmaṇaśca purāṇaṃ gāruḍaṃ śubham /
devaṃ dhyāyanvedamekaṃ caturdhā vyabhajaddhariḥ //
the essence that Vyāsa spoke of old to me, as uttered by Garuḍa.
Having heard the auspicious Gāruḍa Purāṇa from Brahmā,
Vyāsa, meditating on God Hari, divided the single Veda into four.
1.240.8
aṣṭādaśapurāṇāni tāni māṃ prāha vai śukaḥ /
idaṃ tu gāruḍaṃ śreṣṭhaṃ mayā te śaunakeritam //
Śuka indeed declared those eighteen Purāṇas to me;
and this foremost Gāruḍa [Purāṇa] has been spoken by me to you, O Śaunaka,
1.240.9
munīnāṃ śṛṇvatāṃ madhye pṛcchataḥ sarvavācakam /
yaḥ paṭhecchaṇuyādvāpi śrāvayedvā samāhitaḥ //
among the sages listening as you asked, expressing everything.
Whoever reads it, listens to it, or recites it with a concentrated mind,
1.240.10
saṃlikhellekhayedvāpi dhārayetpustake nanu /
dharmārtho prāpnuyāddharmarthārtho cārthamāpnuyāt //
or transcribes it, causes it to be transcribed, or keeps it in a book—
one seeking dharma will attain dharma; one seeking wealth will attain wealth;
1.240.11
kāmā navāpnuyātkāmī mokṣārtho mokṣamāpnuyāt /
yadyadicchati tatsarvaṃ gāruḍaśravaṇāllabhet //
the desiring person will attain desires; one seeking liberation will attain liberation.
Whatever one desires, all that one obtains from listening to the Gāruḍa [Purāṇa].
1.240.12
brāhmaṇo vedapārasya gantā syānnātra saṃśayaḥ /
kṣattriyo kṣattriyasyāpi rakṣitā bhavatīha ca //
A brāhmaṇa shall reach the further shore of the Veda, of this there is no doubt;
and here a kṣatriya also becomes a protector of kṣatriyas.
1.240.13
nānyasya śravaṇaṃ hi syātpurāṇaṃ vedasaṃmitam /
vadedyadi sa mūḍhātmā kīrtihānimavāpnuyāt //
No other should hear this Purāṇa equal to the Veda;
if he recites it [to the unworthy], that foolish person suffers loss of renown.
1.240.14
anyasmai ca vadedvidvān brāhmaṇontarito ya di /
brāhmaṇāntaritai sarvaiḥ śrotavyaṃ gāruḍaṃ tvidama //
A learned person should tell it to another [only] with a brāhmaṇa intervening;
this Gāruḍa [Purāṇa] must be heard by everyone through the mediation of a brāhmaṇa.
1.240.15
yathā viṣṇustathā tārkṣyastārkṣyastotrāddhariḥ stutaḥ /
gāruḍaṃ vasurājaśca śrutvā sarvamavāpa ha //
As is Viṣṇu, so is Tārkṣya; through a hymn of praise to Tārkṣya, Hari is praised.
And King Vasu, having heard the Gāruḍa [Purāṇa], attained everything.
1.240.16
varuruvāca /
namasyāmi mahābāhuṃ khagedra harivāhanam /
viṣṇordhvasaṃsthānaṃ vitrāsitamahāsuram //
Vasu said:
"I bow to the mighty-armed one, the King of Birds, the mount of Hari,
who abides on Viṣṇu's banner, who terrifies the great asuras;
1.240.17
namaste nāgadarpaghna vinatānandavardhana /
supakṣapāta niddabha dīnadaityanirīkṣita //
Homage to you, crusher of the serpents' pride, increaser of Vinatā's joy,
possessor of splendid wings, free of deceit, gazed upon by afflicted Daityas.
1.240.18
parasparasya śāpena supratīkavibhāvasū /
gajakacchapatāṃ prāptau bhrātaraucaiva saṃyutau //
By mutual curse, Supratīka and Vibhāvasu,
the two brothers, together took the forms of an elephant and a tortoise.
1.240.19
yaducchritau yojanāni jastaddviguṇāyataḥ /
kūrmastriyojanotsodhā śatayojanavamaḍalaḥ //
Their height was [many] yojanas, the elephant twice as long;
the tortoise was three yojanas high, with a circumference of a hundred yojanas.
1.240.20
na khādyau tau tvayānīcau caturbhujau ca pakṣipa? /
parasparakṛtācchāpadoṣācca parimocitau //
Those two noble ones, four-armed, were not to be eaten by you, O King of Birds;
and they were freed from the defect of the curse inflicted on each other.
1.240.21
niṣādadeśasvādena devaṃ brūsmāniditam? /
viṣādīśastato muktastatrāpi brāhmaṇastvayā //
By eating in the land of the Niṣādas, […] spoken to the god […];
from there, you released the distressed leader and the brāhmaṇa there.
1.240.22
vaṭārohiṇavṛkṣasya yojanānāṃ śatāyutā /
śākhā bhinnā tvayā yatra vālakhilyāḥ samāsthitāḥ //
A banyan tree branch stretching tens of thousands of yojanas
was broken by you, where the Vālakhilyas were settled.
1.240.23
tvayā yatnakṛtā kṛtvānakhasthau gajakacchapau /
nabhaspapinirālaṃbe sarvataḥ parivāritau //
With effort, having seized the elephant and tortoise in your talons,
[you carried them] through the supportless sky, surrounded on all sides.
1.240.24
tvayā jitā raṇe devāḥ sarve śakrapurogamāḥ /
āhṛtaṃ tatpurā somaṃ vāhniṃ nirvāpya kāśyape //
All the gods headed by Śakra were defeated by you in battle;
having extinguished the fire, that soma was brought by you of old, O son of Kaśyapa!
1.240.25
nāgau dṛṣṭiviṣau kṛtvā rajasā tu vicakṣuṣau /
tīkṣṇāgreṇa na sā bhaṅktvāvikravetau manohataḥ? //
Having blinded with dust the two serpents whose venom was in their eyes,
shattering them with the sharp tip of your beak, their resolve was broken.
1.240.26
āhṛtyāpi tvayā somaṃ nītameva na bhaktitaḥ /
tena viṣṇordhvajasthānaṃ vāhanatvaṃ gato hyasi //
Even having fetched the soma, it was just carried away by you, not tasted;
therefore, you attained a place on Viṣṇu's banner and became his vehicle.
1.240.27
tvayā niḥ kṣipya darbheṣu somaṃ nāgāśca vañcitāḥ /
jahāra cāmṛtaṃ pātraṃ śīghraṃ vai brahmasūdana //
Placing the soma upon darbha grass, the serpents were deceived by you;
and you quickly took away the vessel of nectar, O destroyer of Brahmā's foes!
1.240.28
yatra jihvādvidhābhūtāḥ pannagānāṃ dvijottama /
vinatā mocitā dāsyātkadvā pūrvajitā raṇe //
Where the tongues of the serpents were split in two, O best of birds,
Vinatā was freed from slavery to Kadrū, who was conquered earlier in the contest.
1.240.29
uccaiḥ śravāḥ sa kiṃvarṇaḥ śukla ityeva bhāṣate /
kṛṣṇavarṇamahaṃ manye pūrvadṛṣṭamuvāca ha //
[When asked,] 'Of what color is Uccaiḥśravas?', [one] said, 'White indeed';
[the other] spoke, 'I think it is black,' having seen it before.
1.240.30
tvayā vajrapahāreṇa pakṣamuktaṃ purā svataḥ? /
dadhīcavajraśakrāṇāṃ māturarthāya nānyathā //
By you, when struck by the thunderbolt, a feather was formerly cast off of your own accord,
for the sake of Dadhīca, the thunderbolt, and Indra, and for your mother's sake, not otherwise.
1.240.31
tasya pakṣasya devendro yadānītaṃ hi dṛṣṭavān /
tadā tava suparṇoti nāma sthānaṃ jagattraye //
When Indra, lord of gods, saw the feather that was dropped,
then your name became Suparṇa, celebrated throughout the three worlds.
1.240.32
dhyānamātrādvinaśyettu viṣaṃ sthāvarajaṅgamam /
paṭhedvā śṛṇuyādyaśca bhuktiṃ muktimavāpnuyāt //
By mere meditation on you, immobile and mobile poison is destroyed;
and whoever reads or listens to this attains worldly enjoyment and liberation."
1.240.33
sūta uvāca /
vasurājo gāruḍaṃ vai śrutvā sarvamavāptavān /
garuḍo bhagavānviṣṇudhyāṃyansarvavāptavān //
Sūta said:
King Vasu, having heard the Gāruḍa [Purāṇa], attained everything;
and the blessed Garuḍa, meditating on Viṣṇu, attained everything.
1.240.34
taduktaṃ gāruḍaṃ puṇyaṃ purāṇaṃ yaḥ paṭhennaraḥ /
sarvakāmamavāpyātha prāpnoti paramāṃ gatim //
Whatever man reads that holy Gāruḍa Purāṇa spoken by him,
having attained every desire, then attains the supreme destination.
1.240.35
ślokapādaṃ paṭhitvā ca sarvapāpakṣayo bhavet /
yasyedaṃ vartate geha tasya sarvaṃ bhavediha //
Even by reading a quarter of a verse, all sins are destroyed;
in whose house this [text] remains, to him comes everything in this world.
1.240.36
gāruḍaṃ yasya haste tu tasya hastagato nayaḥ /
yaḥ paṭhecchṛṇuyādetadbhuktiṃ muktiṃ samāpnuyāt //
In whose hand the Gāruḍa [Purāṇa] is, in his hand is all prudent conduct;
whoever reads or hears this shall attain enjoyment and liberation.
1.240.37
dharmārthakāmamokṣāṃśca prāpnuyācchravaṇāditaḥ /
putrārtho labhate putrān kāmārtho kāmamāpnuyāt //
From listening to it and the rest, one attains dharma, wealth, desire, and liberation;
one seeking sons obtains sons; one seeking desire attains desire;
1.240.38
vidyārtho labhate vidyāṃ jayārtho labhate jayam /
brahmahatyādinā pāpī pāpaśuddhimavāpnuyāt //

a sinner through the murder of a brāhmaṇa or similar [crimes] attains purification from sin;
1.240.39
vandhyāpi labhate puttraṃ kanyā vindati satpatim /
kṣemārtho labhate kṣemaṃ bogārtho bogamāpnuyāt //
even a barren woman obtains a son; a maiden finds a good husband;
one seeking safety obtains safety; one seeking enjoyment attains enjoyment;
1.240.40
maṅgalārtho maṅgalāni guṇārtho guṇamāpnuyāt /
kāvyārtho ca kavitvaṃ ca sārārtho sāramāpnuyāt //
one seeking auspiciousness attains blessings; one seeking virtues attains virtue;
one seeking poetry attains poetic power; one seeking the essence attains the essence;
1.240.41
jñānārtho labhate jñānaṃ sarvasaṃsāramardanam /
idaṃ svastyayanaṃ dhanyaṃ gāruḍaṃ garuḍeritam //
one seeking spiritual knowledge obtains knowledge that destroys all worldly existence.
This Gāruḍa [Purāṇa] spoken by Garuḍa is an auspicious, blessed blessing.
1.240.42
nākāle maraṇaṃ tasya ślokamekaṃ tu yaḥ paṭhet /
ślokārdhapaṭhanādasya duṣṭaśatrukṣayo dhruvam //
Untimely death does not befall him who reads even a single verse;
by reading half a verse of this, destruction of wicked enemies is certain.
1.240.43
sūtācchrutvā śaunakastunaumiṣe munibhiḥ kratau /
ahaṃ braheti saṃdhyāyanmuktobhūdgaruḍadhvajāt //
Śaunaka, having heard it from Sūta at the sacrifice in Naimiṣa with the sages,
meditating 'I am Brahman', was liberated through the one whose banner is Garuḍa.
