saṃprāptamuttamānāmākaratāṃ bhīṣmaratnānām //
Sūta said: / In the northern region on the Himavat, the semen of that enemy of the gods fell; / it became the source / of the finest bhīṣma gems.
1.76.2
śuklāḥ śaṅkhābjanibhāḥ syonākasannibhā prabhāvantaḥ /

1.76.3
hemādipratibaddhāḥ śuddhamapi śraddhayā vidhatte yaḥ /

bhīṣmamaṇirguṇayukto samyakprāptāṅgulīkalatratvaḥ //
He incurs no fear from enemies, and they do not mock his master; / a virtuous bhīṣma gem properly attained / becomes a partner upon the finger.
1.76.6
pitṝtarpaṇe pitṝṇāṃ tṛptirbahuvārṣikī bhavati /
śāmyantyadbhutānyapi sarpāṇḍajākhuvṛścikaviṣāṇi /
salilāgnivairitaskarabhayāni bhīmāni naśyanti //
In the ancestral libation it produces satisfaction for the ancestors for many years; / even portents are calmed, as are poisons of snakes, oviparous creatures, rats, and scorpions, / and terrifying dangers from water, fire, enemies, and thieves are destroyed.
1.76.7
śaivalabalāhakābhaṃ puruṣaṃ pītaprabhaṃ prabhāhīnam /
malinadyuti ca vivarṇaṃ dūrātparivarjayetprājñaḥ //
Resembling moss or clouds, rough, yellow in radiance, devoid of luster, / dull in brightness, and discoloured— / a wise man should avoid such a stone from afar.
1.76.8
mūlyaṃ prakalpyameṣāṃ vibudhavarairdaiśakālavijñānāt /
dūre bhūtānāṃ bahu kiñcinnikaṭaprasūtānām //
Their price should be determined by the foremost experts through knowledge of place and time; / it is great for those found far away, / and small for those produced nearby.
