śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam- 89
sūta uvāca /
pṛṣṭaḥ kraiñcukinovāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ punaśca tam /
sa tena pitṛvākyane bhṛśamudvagnamānasaḥ //
The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa—89
Sūta said:
Being questioned, Mārkaṇḍeya spoke again to Krauñcuki:
With his mind greatly agitated by those words of his ancestors,
1.89.2
kanyābhilāṣī viprarṣiḥ paribabhrāma medinīm /
kanyāmalabhamāno 'sau pitṛvākyena dīpitaḥ /
cintāmavāpa mahītamatīvodvagnamānasaḥ //
the brahmin sage, desiring a maiden, wandered over the earth.
Not finding a maiden, spurred on by the words of his ancestors,
he experienced deep anxiety, his mind exceedingly distressed.
1.89.3
kiṃ karomi kra gacchāmi kathaṃ me dārasaṃgrahaḥ /
kṣipraṃ bhavenmatpitṝṇāṃ mamābhyudayakārakaḥ //
“What shall I do? Where shall I go? How can marriage
quickly happen for me, bringing about prosperity for my ancestors and for me?”
1.89.4
iti cintayatastasyamatirjātā mahātmanaḥ /
tapasārādhayāmyenaṃ brahmāṇaṃ kamalodbhavam //
As he was pondering thus, the thought occurred to the great-souled one:
“Through austerity, I shall propitiate Brahmā, the lotus-born.”
1.89.5
tato varṣaśataṃ divyaṃ tapastepe mahāmanāḥ /
tatra sthitaściraṃ kālaṃ vaneṣu niyamasthitaḥ /
ārādhanāya sa tadā paraṃ niyamamāsthitaḥ //
Then the magnanimous one performed austerity for a hundred celestial years;
remaining there for a long time in the forests, steadfast in vows,
he then undertook supreme restraint to propitiate [him].
1.89.6
tataḥ pradarśayāmāsa brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ /
uvācātha prasanno 'smītyucyatāmabhivāñchitam //
Then Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, revealed himself,
and spoke: “I am pleased; let your desire be stated!”
1.89.7
tato 'sau praṇipatyāha brahmāṇaṃ jagato gatim /
pitṝṇāṃ vacanāttena yatkartumabhivāñchitam //
Then, having bowed, he spoke to Brahmā, the refuge of the universe,
about what he wished to do in accordance with the command of his ancestors.
1.89.8
brahmovāca /
prajāpatistvaṃ bhavitā sraṣṭavyā bhavatā prajāḥ /
sṛṣṭvā prajāḥ sutānvipra samutpādya kriyāstathā //
Brahmā said:
You shall become a Prajāpati; offspring must be created by you.
Having created offspring, producing sons, O brahmin, and likewise rituals,
1.89.9
kṛtvā kṛtādhikārastvaṃ tataḥ siddhimavāpyasi /
satvaṃ yathoktaṃ pitṛbhiḥ kuru dāraparigraham //
having carried out your role, you will then attain perfection.
Therefore, take a wife as instructed by your ancestors.

ta eva tuṣṭāḥ pitaraḥ pradāsyanti tavepsitam /
patnīṃ sutāṃśca santuṣṭāḥ kiṃ na dadyuḥ pitāmahāḥ //
With this desire in mind, let worship of the ancestors be performed. / Satisfied, those very ancestors will grant what you desire. / When pleased, what would the ancestors not give—a wife and sons?
1.89.11

1.89.12
tuṣṭāva ca pitṝnvipraḥ stavairebhirathādṛtaḥ /
