kenaiva sahapiṇḍatvaṃ strīpusorvaktumarhasi //

strīpumāṃśau sahaikatvaṃ pāpnutaḥ kathamuttamam /
jīvedbhartari nārīṇāṃ sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ kutaḥ //

agnyārohe kathaṃ śrāddhaṃ vṛṣotsargaḥ kathaṃ bhavet //

kathayasva prasādena hītāya jagatāṃ prabho //
How should the gift of a water-jar be made once the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa is performed? / Please tell me out of grace, for the benefit of the worlds, O Lord.

varṣaṃ yāvatkhagaśreṣṭha yadācarati mānavaḥ //
The Blessed Lord said: / I shall explain duly the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, O bird. / Whatever a mortal performs for up to a year, O best of birds—
2.26.7
sapiṇḍane tato vṛtte pitṛlokaṃ sa gacchati /
tasmātputtreṇa kartavyaṃ sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ pituḥ //
when the sapiṇḍana has then taken place, he goes to the realm of the ancestors. / Therefore, the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa of the father must be performed by the son.
2.26.8
saṃvatsare tu sampūrṇe kuryātpiṇḍa praveśanam /
piṇḍapraveśavidhanā tasya nityaṃ mṛtāhnikam //
When a full year is completed, he should perform the merging of the ball of rice; / by virtue of the rule of merging the ball of rice, the anniversary of the day of death becomes an ongoing duty.
2.26.9
niścitaṃ pakṣiśārdūla varṣānte piṇḍamelanam /
sahapiṇḍe kṛte pretastato yāti parāṃ gatim /
tannāma samparityajya tataḥ pitṛgaṇo bhavet //
The joining of the rice ball at the end of a year is settled, O tiger among birds; / when the union of the rice ball is performed, the deceased spirit then goes to the supreme state; / having completely cast off that designation, he then becomes [one of] the company of ancestors.
2.26.10
tripakṣe vāpi ṣaṇmāse melayetprapitāmahaiḥ /
jñātvā vṛddhivivāhādi svagotravihitāni ca //

2.26.11
vivāhaṃ naiva kurvīta mṛte ca gṛhamedhini /
bhikṣurbhikṣāṃ na gṛhṇāti yāvatkuryātsapiṇḍanam //
One should not perform a marriage when the householder has died; / a mendicant does not take alms as long as [the heir] has not performed the sapiṇḍana.
2.26.12
svagotre 'pyaśucistāvadyāvatpiṇḍaṃ na melayet /
melanātpretaśabdastu nivarteta khageśvara //
Even within one's own gotra one is impure so long as one does not merge the rice ball; / from that merging, the term 'preta' ceases, O King of Birds.

saputtrasya na kartavyamekoddiṣṭaṃ kadācana /
sapiṇḍīkaraṇādūrdhvaṃ yatrayatra pradīyate //
For one who has a son, an ekoddiṣṭa must never be performed; / after the sapiṇḍīkaraṇa, wherever [an offering] is given,
2.26.17
tatratatra trayaṃ kāryamanyathā pitṛghātakaḥ /
tribhiḥ kuryādaśaktaśca pārvaṇaṃ muninoditam //
in every such case it must be performed for three [ancestors]; otherwise one is a slayer of the ancestors. / Even if incapable, one should perform the pārvaṇa for the three, as declared by the sage.
2.26.18
taddine taddine kuryātpitāmahamukhānyataḥ /
ajñānāddinamāsānāṃ tasmātpārvaṇamiṣyate //
On that day and on that day, one should perform it since it begins with the grandfather; / because of ignorance of the days and months, the pārvaṇa is therefore desired.
2.26.19
anutpannaśarīrasya na dānaṃ pitṛbhiḥ saha /
etaiḥ ṣoḍaśabhiḥ śrāddhaiḥ preto muktastu jāyate //

aputtrasya sapiṇḍatvaṃ naiva kuryātstriyo 'pi vā /
yāvajjīva ca sadbhatryā na kuryātsahapiṇḍatām //

pituḥ puttreṇa kartavyaṃ sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ sadā /
puttrābhāve tu patnī syātpatnyabhāve sahodaraḥ //

sapiṇḍanakriyāṃ kṛtvā kuryānnāndīmukhaṃ tataḥ //

For all childless men, the wife should perform the sapiṇḍana rite, / or she may have it performed by an officiating priest or the family priest.
2.26.28
kṛtacūḍopanītaśca pituḥ śrāddhaṃ samācaret /
uccārayetsvadhākāraṃ na tu vedākṣarāṇyasau //
Even if he has [only] undergone the tonsure and the investiture, he should perform the father's śrāddha; / he should utter the svadhā-call, but not the syllables of the Veda.
2.26.29
bhartrādibhistribhiḥ kāryaṃ sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ striyāḥ /
pitṛvyabhrātṛputreṇa sodareṇa kanīyasā //

ye sapiṇḍīkṛtāḥ pretāsteṣāṃ na syātpṛthak kriyā //

2.26.31
sapiṇḍane kṛte vatsa pṛthaktvaṃ tu vigarhitam /
yastu kuryātpṛthak piṇḍaṃ pitṛhā so 'bhijāyate //
Once sapiṇḍana is performed, my child, separation is indeed condemned; / whoever offers a separate piṇḍa becomes a killer of his ancestors.
2.26.32
sapiṇḍīkaraṇe vṛtte pṛthaktvaṃ nopapadyate /
pṛthak piṇḍe kṛte paścātpunaḥ kuryātsapiṇḍanam //
When sapīṇḍīkaraṇa has occurred, separation is not appropriate; / if a separate piṇḍa has subsequently been offered, he should perform sapiṇḍana again.
2.26.33
sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ kṛtvā ekoddiṣṭaṃ karoti yaḥ /
ātmānaṃ ca tathā pretaṃ sa nayeddamaśāsanam //

2.26.34
varṣaṃ yāvaktriyā kāryā nāmagotreṇa dhīmatā /

2.26.37
jīvamāne ca pitari na hi puttre sapiṇḍatā /
strīṇāṃ sapiṇḍanaṃ nāsti tathā bhartari jīvati //

hutāśaṃ yā samārūḍhā caturthe 'hni pativratā /
tasyā bhartṛdine kāryaṃ vṛṣotsargādikaṃ ca yat //

puttrikā patigotrā syādadhastātputrajanmanaḥ /
putrotpatteḥ parastātsā pitṛgotraṃ vrajetpunaḥ //

2.26.40
patipatnyoḥ sadaikatvaṃ hutāśaṃ yādhirohati /
putreṇaiva pṛthak śrāddhaṃ kṣayākhye tasya vāsare //
For husband and wife there is always oneness; if she ascends the fire, / the son should perform a separate śrāddha on his day of death.
2.26.41
aputtrau cenmṛtau syātāmekacityāṃ same 'hani /
pṛthak śrāddhāni kurvīta sāpiḍyaṃ patinā saha //

2.26.42
pṛthakpṛthak ca piṇḍena dampatī patinā saha /
na lipyate mahādoṣairetatsatyaṃ vaco mama //
With separate piṇḍas for the couple, along with the husband, / one is not smeared with great faults; this word of mine is true.
2.26.43
ekacityāṃ samārūḍhau dampatī nidhanaṃ gatau /
ekapākaṃ prakurvīta piṇḍāndadyātpṛthakpṛthak //

ghaṭādipadadānāni mahādānāni yāni ca /
varṣaṃ yāvatpṛthakkuryātpretastṛptiṃ vrajecciram //
On the eleventh day, the release of the bull, the sixteen preta-śrāddhas, / the gifts of vessels and steps, and the great gifts— / he should perform them separately for a year, so that the ghost attains satisfaction for a long time.
2.26.45
ekagotre mṛtānāṃ tu striyā vā puruṣasya vā /
sthaṇḍilaṃ caikataḥ kuryāddhomaṃ kuryātpṛthakpṛthak //

pākairena patistrīṇāmanyeṣāṃ ca vigarhitam //
The śrāddha that is on the eleventh day, the separate piṇḍas and feeding— / with one cooking for husband and wife, but for others it is condemned.
2.26.47
ekenaiva tu pākena śrāddhāni kurute sutaḥ /
ekaṃ tu vikiraṃ kuryātpiṇḍāndadyadbahūnapi /
tīrthe cāparapakṣe vā candrasūryagrahe 'pi vā //
With only one cooking the son performs the śrāddhas; / he should make a single scatter-offering, but give many piṇḍas / at a sacred ford, during the dark fortnight, or during an eclipse of the moon or the sun.
2.26.48
nārī bhartāramāsādya kuṇapaṃ dahate yadā /
agnirdahati gātrāṇi ātmānaṃ naiva pīḍayet //
When a woman, having reached her husband, burns [with] the corpse, / the fire burns the limbs; it does not torment the soul at all.
2.26.49
dahyate dhmāyamānānāṃ dhātūnāṃ hi yathā malam /
tathā nārī daheddehaṃ hutāśe hyamṛtopame //
Just as the impurity of metals being blown upon is burned away, / so a woman burns away her body in the fire, which is indeed like nectar.
2.26.50
divyādau divyadehastu śuddho bhavati pūruṣaḥ /
taptatailena lohena vahninā naiva dahyate //
In an ordeal and the like, a person with a divine body becomes pure; / he is not burned at all by heated oil, iron, or fire.
2.26.51
tathā sā patisaṃyuktā dahyate na kadācana /
antarātmā mṛte tasminmṛto 'pyekatvamāgataḥ //
Likewise, she who is united with her husband is never burned; / when he is dead, her inner self, though dead, has attained oneness [with him].
2.26.52
bhartṛsaṃgaṃ parityajya anyatra mriyate yadi /
bhartṛlokaṃ na sā yāti yāvadābhūtasaṃplavam //
If, abandoning union with her husband, she dies elsewhere, / she does not go to the world of her husband until the dissolution of all beings.

lakṣmīyutānparityajya mātaraṃ pitaraṃ tathā /
mṛtaṃ patimanuvrajya sā ciraṃ sukhamedhate //
Abandoning mother and father, endowed though they are with wealth, / and following her dead husband, she rejoices in happiness for a long time.
2.26.54
divyavarṣapramāṇena tisraḥ koṭyor'ddhakoṭayaḥ /
tāvatkālaṃ vasetsvarge nakṣatraiḥ saha sarvadā //
For the measure of three and a half crores of divine years, / for that length of time she resides in heaven together with the stars perpetually.
2.26.55
tadante carate loke kule bhavati bhoginām /
sā hi labdhamahāprītirbhartrā saha pativratā //
At the end of that, that devoted wife, having attained great affection with her husband, / wanders in the world and is born in a family of enjoyers.
2.26.56
evaṃ na kurute nārī dharmoḍhā patisaṃgamam /
janmajanmani duḥ khārtāduḥ śīlāpriyavādinī //
A woman lawfully wedded who does not thus join her husband / suffers birth after birth, ill-natured and speaking unpleasant words;
2.26.57
valgulī gṛhasodhā vā godhā vā dvimukhī bhavet /
svabhartāraṃ parityajya parapuṃsonuvartinī //
she becomes a bat, a house lizard, an iguana, or a two-headed snake, / having abandoned her own husband and followed another man.
2.26.58
tasmātsarvaprayatnena svapatiṃ strī niṣevate /
manasā karmaṇā vācā mṛtaṃ jīvantameva vā //
Therefore, by every effort a woman serves her own husband / in thought, word, and deed, whether he is dead or living.
2.26.59
jīvamāne mṛte vāpi kilbiṣaṃ kurute tu yā /
sa ca vaidhavyamāpnoti janmajanmani durbhagā //
The woman who commits a sin against him, whether he is living or dead, / becomes unfortunate and incurs widowhood birth after birth.
2.26.60
yaddevebhyo yatpitṛbhyaḥ śraddhayaiva pradīyate /
tatphalaṃ bhartṛpūjātaḥ kuryādbhartrarcanaṃ tataḥ //
Whatever fruit is given with faith to the gods and the ancestors / is obtained from worship of the husband; therefore, she should perform the worship of her husband.
2.26.61
evaṃ kṛte khagaśreṣṭha pitṛloke ciraṃ vaset /
yāvadādityacandrau ca tāvaddevasamā divi //
When this is done, O best of birds, she dwells in the world of the ancestors for a long time; / as long as the sun and the moon exist, she is equal to the gods in heaven.
2.26.62
punaścirāyuṣo bhūttvā jāyante vipule kule /
pativratā yathā nārī bhartṛduḥkhaṃ na vindati //
Then, having become long-lived, they are born into an extensive family; / just as a devoted wife does not experience the sorrow of losing a husband.
2.26.63
sarvametaddhi kathitaṃ mayā tava khageśvara /
viśeṣaṃ kathayiṣyāmi mṛtasyaiva sukhapradam //
All this has indeed been told by me to you, O king of birds; / I will tell the specific [rite] that grants happiness to the deceased.
2.26.64
dvādaśāhe kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ varṣaṃ yāvatsapiṇḍanam /
punaḥ kuryātsadā nityaṃ ghaṭānnaṃ pratimāsikam //
All the sapiṇḍana up to a year having been performed on the twelfth day, / one should perpetually perform anew the monthly pot-and-food offering.
2.26.65
kṛtasya karaṇaṃ nāsti pretakāryādṛte khaga /
yaḥ karoti naraḥ kaścitkṛt pūrvaṃ vinaśyati //
There is no redoing of what is done, except for the rite for the dead, O bird; / whatever man performs [a rite already done], what was previously done is ruined.
2.26.66
mṛtasyaiva punaḥ kuryātpreto 'kṣayyamavāpnuyāt /
pratimāsaṃ ghaṭā deyā sodanā jalapūritāḥ //
For the deceased alone he may perform it again; the preta attains imperishable [satisfaction]; / every month pots filled with water and cooked rice should be given.
2.26.67
arvākca vṛddheḥ karaṇācca tārkṣya sapiṇḍanaṃ yaḥ kurute hi putraḥ /
tathāpi māsaṃ pratipiṇḍamekamannaṃ ca kumbhaṃ sajalaṃ ca dadyāt //
And if, before the growth [period], O Tārkṣya, a son performs sapiṇḍana, / even so he should give one piṇḍa, food, and a jar with water every month.
2.26.67.p1
