1.137.1
The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 137.
Brahmā said: / On the thirteenth lunar day, the god of love should be worshipped with damanaka and other [flowers], / accompanied by Rati and Prīti, free from sorrow, and adorned with jewels.
1.137.2
(Thus the Madanakatrayodaśī observance.)
Whoever does not eat on the fourteenth as well as on the eighth of the bright and dark fortnights / for one year, attains liberation through the worship of Śiva.
1.137.3
(Thus the Śivacaturdaśyaṣṭamī observance.)
Having fasted for three nights, one should donate an auspicious dwelling on the full moon of Kārttika; / one reaches the realm of the Sun: this is the auspicious observance of the abode.
1.137.4
Whatever is offered on the new moon to the ancestors, such as water, is inexhaustible. / Eating at night while worshiping the days of the week by name, one enjoys all things.
1.137.5
(Thus the observances of the weekdays.)
O sage among brāhmaṇas, on the twelve asterisms that occur each month, / a man should duly worship Acyuta at the end of each under that name:
1.137.6
Keśava in Mārgaśīrṣa, and so forth, beginning with Kṛttikā. / For four months, there should be an oblation of clarified butter, and one should offer kṛsara.
1.137.7
Beginning in Āṣāḍha, [one should offer] pāyasa and feed the brāhmaṇas with it. / With bathing in the five bovine products and water, and with food-offerings, one should observe the night rite.
1.137.8
Every article is called an offering prior to the dismissal [of the deity]; / when the Lord of the Universe has been dismissed, it instantly becomes nirmālya.
1.137.9
The foremost knowers of the Pāñcarātra eat the offered food themselves. / In this way, at the end of the year, one should worship [him] especially:
1.137.10
“Obeisance, obeisance to you, O Acyuta! May there be the destruction of sin; may merit increase! / May my sovereignty, wealth, and possessions be ever inexhaustible; and likewise may my lineage be inexhaustible!
1.137.11
Just as you, O Acyuta, are beyond the highest, being Brahman, beyond the highest, / so make what I desire, O Sin-destroyer, Immeasurable One, ever unfailing!
1.137.12
O Acyuta, O Ananta, O Govinda! Be pleased: whatever is desired, / make that inexhaustible, O Boundless Soul, O Supreme Person!”
1.137.13
A man who fasts on the eleventh, the eighth, and the fourteenth / for seven years secures long life, prosperity, and auspicious destinies.
1.137.14
On the seventh, one should worship Viṣṇu, Durgā, Śambhu, and the Sun in order; / spotless, one attains their world and all desired objects.
1.137.15
By taking one meal a day, by eating at night, by eating food obtained unasked, / or by fasting with vegetables and other [simple foods], worshipping all the deities,
1.137.16
everyone on all the lunar days attains enjoyment and liberation. / The Giver of Wealth and Agni are worshipped on the first day; Nāsatya and Dasra [on the second];
1.137.17
Śrī and Yama on the second; Pārvatī along with Śrī on the fifth; / the snakes on the sixth; Kārttikeya on the seventh; the Sun, bestower of wealth, [on the seventh];
1.137.18
Durgā on the eighth, and the Mothers; Takṣaka on the ninth; / Indra on the tenth; the Giver of Wealth on the eleventh, along with the lords among sages;
1.137.19
Hari on the twelfth; Kāma on the thirteenth; Maheśvara / on the fourteenth; and Brahmā and the ancestors on the fifteenth.
1.137.19.p1
Thus ends the hundred and thirty-seventh chapter, entitled 'Determination of the Observances Pertaining to Lunar Days, Weekdays, Asterisms, and the Like', in the section on conduct, the first portion of the first part in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
