The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — \[Chapter\] 152.
Dhanvantari said:
Now I shall declare the diagnosis of the disease of consumption, / which is followed by many diseases and precedes many diseases.

### [1.152.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.2)

It is called royal consumption (rājayakṣmā), wasting (kṣaya), desiccation (śoṣa), and king of diseases (rogarāj). / Because it occurred in ancient times to the king of stars and dvijas \[the Moon\],

### [1.152.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.3)

and because it is both a king and consumption, it is therefore considered royal consumption. / Because it causes the wasting of bodily tissues and remedies, and because it arises therefrom, it is wasting;

### [1.152.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.4)

because of the drying up of chyle and the other tissues, it is desiccation; and it is king of diseases because it acts like a king. / Rash action, suppression of natural urges, loss of semen, vigor, and unctuousness,

### [1.152.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.5)

and disregard for the proper regimen of food and drink are its four causes. / Agitated by these, wind excites pitta in vain all around,

### [1.152.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.6)

enters the joints of the body, violently afflicts the vessels, / blocks the openings of the channels, or likewise excessively opens them,

### [1.152.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.7)

and produces disease of the heart, in the middle, upper, lower, and transverse \[regions\]. / The premonitory signs of this approaching \[illness\] are catarrh, severe fever,

### [1.152.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.8)

salivation, sweetness in the mouth, weakness of the digestive fire and of the body, / gluttonous cravings for food and drink, perceiving impurity in what is pure,

### [1.152.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.9)

frequent falling of flies, straw, hair, and the like into food and drink, / nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, loss of strength even when unbathed/bathed,

### [1.152.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.10)

excessive whiteness of the hands, chest, feet, mouth, abdomen, and eyes, / a pricking pain in the arms, \[a coating on\] the tongue, seeing hideousness in one's body,

### [1.152.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.11)

fondness for women, liquor, and meat, disgust, covering the head, / overgrowth of nails and hair, and defeat in dreams.

### [1.152.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.12)

Falling \[or attacked\] by chameleons, snakes, monkeys, beasts of prey, and birds, / climbing upon heaps of hair, bones, chaff, ash, and the like, or trees,

### [1.152.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.13)

beholding deserted villages and regions, drying up of water, / light falling from the sky, forest fires, and burning trees \[are seen in dreams\].

### [1.152.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.14)

Chronic catarrh, asthma, cough, pain in the voice and head, loss of taste, / upward breath, emaciation, and vomiting downward when it has entered the digestive tract,

### [1.152.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.15)

pain situated in the flanks, and fever occurring when located in the joints: / these eleven symptoms of royal consumption arise.

### [1.152.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.16)

One should know its complications to be painful afflictions ruining the throat, / yawning, aching limbs, spitting, sluggish digestive fire, and fetor of the mouth.

### [1.152.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.17)

There, from wind arise aching of the head and flanks, with generalized body-ache, / choking of the throat, and loss of voice. From pitta arise \[burning\] in feet, shoulders, and hands,

### [1.152.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.18)

burning sensation, diarrhea, vomiting of blood, foul mouth odor, fever, and intoxication. / From kapha arise anorexia, vomiting, cough, heaviness in the upper limbs,

### [1.152.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.19)

salivation, catarrh, dyspnea, hoarseness of voice, and sluggish digestive fire. / Due to sluggish digestive fire through the humors, with predominant swelling, coating, and kapha,

### [1.152.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.20)

when the channel-mouths are obstructed and the tissues are deficient, / burning occurs in the seat of the mind, and other complications arise.

### [1.152.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.21)

The food is digested right in the gut accompanied by sour juices; / the food of one suffering from wasting mostly does not serve to nourish the limbs.

### [1.152.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.22)

For his chyle does not produce blood, nor \[blood produce\] flesh; / supported purely on all sides \[by waste matter alone\], the consumptive person survives.

### [1.152.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.23)

Even with few symptoms, one who is severely emaciated and has loss of the six sense organs in the disease / should be rejected; but otherwise, even with all \[symptoms present\], one should treat him.

### [1.152.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.24)

From the humors, separate or combined, and from the depletion of all fat, / hoarseness of voice may occur: his voice becomes weak, dry, and unstable.

### [1.152.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.25)

The throat appears parrot-colored, with relief from unctuous and warm things, from wind. / From pitta, there is a burning sensation in the palate and throat, and continuous dryness.

### [1.152.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.26)

The throat seems smeared with phlegm, and the mouth rattles. / From all \[humors\] conflicting on their own, wasting occurs with all symptoms.

### [1.152.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.152.27)

It seems to smoke intensely, and phlegmatic signs arise. / Here, cases of wasting are difficult to cure; and one should reject that which possesses all \[symptoms\] even if slight.
