1.16.1

The glorious and great Garuḍapurāṇa — 16
Rudra said:
Explain once again the meditation, O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace,
upon the divine Lord Viṣṇu, pure, the Supreme Self.

1.16.2

Hari said:
Listen, O Rudra, to the meditation upon Hari that destroys the tree of cyclical existence:
whose nature is consciousness, infinite, all-pervading, unborn, undecaying;

1.16.3

imperishable, omnipresent, eternal; it is solely the great Brahman,
the root of the entire world, omnipresent, the Supreme Lord;

1.16.4

dwelling in the heart of all beings, the Great Lord of all beings,
the support of all, devoid of support, the cause of all causes;

1.16.5

unstained, liberated, meditated upon by liberated yogins,
devoid of a gross body, devoid of the eye,

1.16.6

devoid of the organ of speech, free from the attributes of living beings,
devoid of the organ of locomotion, free from the attributes of speech,
devoid of anus and genitals, and free from all senses;

1.16.7

likewise bereft of the mind, free from mental attributes,
the Lord of gods is devoid of intellect, devoid of the thinking faculty,

1.16.8

devoid of ego, free from the attributes of intellect,
bereft of prāṇa and devoid of apāna,

1.16.9

free from the vital air called vyāna, and free from the attributes of the life-breath.
Hari said:
I shall further declare the worship of the Sun, as it was told to Bhṛgu of old.

1.16.10

"Oṃ, homage to Khakholka."
This root mantra of the Sun bestows worldly enjoyment and liberation.

1.16.11

"Oṃ, homage to Khakholka, to the deity!"
"Oṃ vici ṭha ṭha, to the head, svāhā!"
"Oṃ, to the knowing one, ṭha ṭha, to the topknot, svāhā!"
"Oṃ, to the thousand-rayed one, ṭha ṭha, to the armour, svāhā!"

1.16.12

"Oṃ, to the lord of all splendor, ṭha ṭha, to the weapon, namaḥ!"
"Oṃ jvala jvala prajvala prajvala ṭha ṭha namaḥ!"

1.16.13

This is the fire-enclosure mantra of the Sun that destroys sin:
"Oṃ, we know the Aditya, we meditate on the Creator of the universe; may that Sūrya inspire us."

1.16.14

One should perform the sanctification of the limbs with the Gāyatrī of the Sun;
and in the east [worship him] as the soul of dharma, in the south as Yama,

1.16.15

and next as the Commander of Punishment; in the north as the Divinity;
in the northeast one should worship Śyāmapiṅgala, and in the southeast Dīkṣita;

1.16.16

and Vajrapāṇi in the southwest, and Bhūrbhuvaḥsvaḥ in the northwest.
"Oṃ, homage to the Moon, the lord of asterisms!"
"Oṃ, homage to Mars, the son of the Earth!"
"Oṃ, homage to Mercury, the son of Soma!"
"Oṃ, homage to the Lord of Speech, the lord of all knowledge!"
"Oṃ, homage to Venus, the great seer, the son of Bhṛgu!"
"Oṃ, homage to Saturn, the son of Sūrya!"
"Oṃ, homage to Rāhu!"
"Oṃ, homage to Ketu!"

1.16.17

These are to be worshipped, O bull-bannered [Śiva], beginning from the east up to the northeast.
"Oṃ, homage to the Spine!"
"Oṃ, homage to the First Lord!"
"Oṃ, homage to Buddha!"

1.16.18

"Oṃ, O Blessed One, garlanded with countless rays, O Lord of the entire world, whose mount is seven horses, four-armed one, bestower of supreme accomplishment, reddish-brown with sparks! Come, come here; accept, accept this guest-water placed upon my head, O radiant one of fierce form, jvala jvala ṭha ṭha namaḥ!"

1.16.19

Having invoked him with this mantra, one should then dismiss the Sun:
"Oṃ, homage to the blessed Āditya of a thousand rays; depart in peace to return again."

1.16.19.p1

Thus ends the sixteenth chapter, named 'Exposition of the Meditation on Hari and the Worship of the Sun,' in the ritual conduct section, designated the first part of the first section in the glorious and great Garuḍapurāṇa.
