'Om. King Varuṇa made a wide path for the sun to follow... / The imposer and the speakers, the two wise of heart. / Homage to Fire and Varuṇa; praise is Varuṇa's noose; / homage to Varuṇa.'

### [1.214.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.7)

'Om. A hundred, a thousand are your nooses, O Varuṇa, spread out, vast and fit for sacrifice. / May Savitṛ, Viṣṇu, and all the Maruts of fine praise free us from them today. Svāhā.' / Forming a hollow with his hands containing water with 'sumitriyā naḥ', he should discard it to the north, having purified it backwards: / 'Om. May the waters and plants be friendly to us; / may they be unfriendly to him who hates us and whom we hate.'

### [1.214.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.8)

First \[washing\] feet and waist with three lumps of earth each, / washing his hands, sipping water, and then paying homage to the water:

### [1.214.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.9)

'Om. Viṣṇu strode out across this; three times he set down his foot; \[all is\] gathered in its dust.' / Afterwards, remaining concentrated, he should sip water with the great sacred utterances.

He should cleanse the limbs with earth using the verse 'idaṃ viṣṇuḥ'. / Facing the Sun, he should immerse himself with the verse 'āpo asmān'.

### [1.214.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.11)

'Om. May the motherly waters purify us, may they who drip with ghee cleanse us with ghee; / for the divine ones wash away all defilement; I emerge from them clean and purified.'

### [1.214.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.12)

Then, having rubbed the limbs, plunging in and emerging slowly, / and smearing himself with cow dung, with the verse 'mā nas toke':

### [1.214.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.13)

'Om. Do not harm our children or our progeny, do not harm our lifespan, do not harm our cows, do not harm our horses; / do not slay our heroes in your wrath, O Rudra; bearing oblations, we invoke you always.'

### [1.214.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.14)

Then one should sprinkle oneself with the mantras addressed to Varuṇa in their proper order:
with the two verses beginning, “Listen to this, O Varuṇa,” and also “So do thou to us,” and “Thou to us”;

### [1.214.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.15)

and with “Waters, you are...”, “May they release...”, and “At the concluding bath...”:
“Oṃ, listen to this call of mine today, O Varuṇa, and show mercy; seeking your aid, I call on you.”

### [1.214.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.16)

“Oṃ, praying with sacred formulation, I approach you for that; for that the sacrificer prays with his oblations.
Heed here without wrath, O Varuṇa; do not steal away our life, widely praised one!
Oṃ, wise Agni, do avert from us the wrath of the god Varuṇa;
most eager sacrificer, best bearer \[of oblations\], blazing forth, release from us all hostilities! Svāhā.
Oṃ, be thou, O Agni, closest to us, an aid at the dawning of this dawn;
appeasing Varuṇa for us, being generous, delight in our mercy; easily invoked, be with us!
Oṃ, O waters, \[let not\] harm to plants \[occur\]... from that realm may Varuṇa free us; when we swear 'by the cows' or 'by Varuṇa', from that release us, O Varuṇa!
Oṃ, loosen the uppermost fetter from us, O Varuṇa, loosen the lowermost, untie the middle one;
then may we, in your ordinance, O son of Aditi, be blameless for Aditi!
May they release me... from Varuṇa's \[fetter\]...
... from Yama's consort, from every sin!
At the concluding bath, again... \[…\]
... the evil done against the gods, by the gods... \[...\]”

### [1.214.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.17)

Having thus sprinkled oneself, plunged in, and sipped water again,
one should sprinkle \[water\] with darbha grass using these purifying, generic mantras:

### [1.214.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.18)

with the three verses beginning “You, O waters, are indeed…”, with “This, O waters, rich in oblations…”,
with the two verses beginning “Divine waters…”, with the tṛca “The waters are divine…”;

### [1.214.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.19)

and with “As if from a wooden post…”, “May the divine waters be auspicious for us…”, “The essence of waters…”,
“The waters are divine…”, and the first nine pāvamānī verses beginning with “May they purify…”;

### [1.214.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.20)

and with “May the lord of thought…”, having bathed oneself gently and with concentration;
and with “Golden-hued…”, and likewise the other pāvamānī verses;

### [1.214.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.21)

the Taratsamas, the Śuddhavatīs, and purifying verses according to one's capacity.
One should employ many sacred verses dedicated to Varuṇa according to one's ability,

### [1.214.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.22)

joined with the syllable Oṃ, with the vyāhṛtis, and with the Gāyatrī.
One should perform the sprinkling in proper order at the beginning and at the end.

### [1.214.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.23)

The sprinkling is prescribed only for one standing in the midst of water;
and one should recite the Aghamarṣaṇa mantra three times while submerged in the water.

### [1.214.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.24)

Composed, one should repeat thrice the verses beginning with “As if from a wooden post...”, and the tṛca “This spotted bull...”,
or any other mantras taught in the Smṛti.

### [1.214.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.25)

A wise person should recite the Gāyatrī accompanied by the vyāhṛtis and the Praṇava,
or should repeat the Praṇava, or meditate on the imperishable Viṣṇu.

### [1.214.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.26)

The waters are indeed the abode of Viṣṇu; he alone is called the Lord of Waters.
These \[waters\] are thus his bodies; therefore one should remember him in the waters.

### [1.214.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.27)

Plunging into the waters again and again with the mantra beginning “That supreme step of Viṣṇu...”;
for this is the Vaiṣṇavī Gāyatrī, intended for the remembrance of Viṣṇu:

### [1.214.28](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.28)

“Oṃ, O waters, carry away this impurity of mine, washing away the blood,
as well as whatever untrue sacrifice, and whatever terrible curse there is.”

### [1.214.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.214.29)

“May the waters and the purifying Soma release me from that sin. May these waters, possessing oblations, be evident to the sacrificer;
may the divine Asura possess oblations; may the Sun possess oblations.
Divine waters, wives of the water, and whatever wave is fit for offering, full of vigour, may the Aditya... to the gods, deities... of the ocean...;
May the divine, honeyed waters receive... by which they sprinkle Mitra and Varuṇa, by which \[they lead\] Indra... as from a post, may the divine waters be auspicious to us... the essence of the waters which is supreme...;
Divine waters, approaching the sun, honeyed for the offspring, may the fruitful plants spring up from their place...;
May the gentle Pitṛs purify me, may the ancestors purify with the strainer of full life;
may the grandfathers purify me, may the great-grandfathers purify me;
with a strainer of full life may I enjoy a full span of life!
O Agni, protect the lives... food and vigour...;
May the host of gods purify me, may thoughts purify with the mind;
may all beings purify, O Jātavedas, do purify me!
Purify me with the strainer, glowing with bright light, O god;
O Agni, according to your designs, following our designs!
With that strainer of yours, O Agni, which is stretched across your flame, may the sacred formulation purify me!
May the purifying Soma, possessing the heavenly light, wise, with his filter, he who is the purifier, may he purify me!
By both, O divine Savitṛ, by the filter and by your impulse, we purify this sacred formulation!
May the All-gods, the purifying goddesses, receive... rejoicing with her in the banquets, may we be masters of riches!
May the Lord of Thought purify me with a flawless filter, with the rays of the sun!
Of that filtered purifier of yours, whatever desire I have, may I accomplish it! May the divine Lord of Speech, Savitṛ, purify me with a flawless filter, with the rays of the sun!
O Lord of the Filter, of that filtered purifier of yours, whatever desire I have, may I accomplish it again! The Lord of the Sky, ‘this spotted bull has approached’ to the mother and father...;
May the divine Savitṛ purify me with a flawless filter, with the rays of the sun!
O Lord of the Filter, of that filtered purifier of yours, whatever desire I have, may I accomplish it!
Oṃ, that supreme step of Viṣṇu the sages behold forever,
like an eye outspread in heaven.”
