The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — [Chapter] 219
Brahmā said: / I shall declare the daily śrāddha; it is like the preceding one, with its specific rules: / "Om, for our father and grandfathers of such-and-such gotras, of such-and-such names, along with their wives, I shall perform the śrāddha among you with cooked food." / The seat and so forth are used here, except for the Viśvedevas.

1.219.2

I shall declare the vṛddhi-śrāddha, similar to the preceding with its specifics: / At the time of looking upon the face of a newborn son and other [auspicious occasions], the vṛddhi-śrāddha should be performed with the participants facing east, wearing the sacred thread over the left shoulder, using barley, jujube fruit, and kuśa-grass, with the rite for gods, ending in obeisance, and with the customary offerings made towards the south.

1.219.3

Grasping the right knee: "Today, on this auspicious occasion of ours, at the śrāddha to be performed for our great-grandmothers, grandmothers, and mothers, of such-and-such gotras and names, I shall perform the śrāddha with cooked food among you for the Viśvedevas named Vasu and Satya"—this is the invitation to the brāhmaṇas representing the deities. / When he has said, "Om, you may perform it," exactly in this manner is the invitation to the other brāhmaṇa representing the deities.

1.219.4

Then: "On this auspicious occasion, for my great-grandmother of such-and-such gotra, such-and-such name, of the Nāndīmukha class, I shall perform the śrāddha with cooked food among you"—this is the invitation to the brāhmaṇa representing the great-grandmother. / When he has said, "I will perform it," exactly in this manner is the invitation to the brāhmaṇas representing the maternal great-grandmothers and the others.

1.219.5

Seeking permission from all the brāhmaṇas representing the gods and the ancestors to perform the śrāddha: / for the seat, "Om, come, O Viśvedevas, hear this invocation of mine; / sit upon this sacred grass. / Om, O Viśvedevas, hear this invocation, ye who are in the atmosphere and ye who abide in heaven; / ye who have Agni as your tongue, or wherever ye be, having seated yourselves on this sacred grass, exhilarate yourselves!" / "Om, let them come"—this is the invocation of the Viśvedevas, the offering of perfumes and so on, / and reciting the confirmation of flawlessness.

1.219.6

Then, seeking permission of the great-grandmothers and others, offering a seat, offering perfumes and the like, and reciting the confirmation of flawlessness; / likewise for the grandmother and the mother. / Then, seeking permission of the great-grandfathers and others; / offering a seat, invocation, offering of perfumes and so on, and doing the seeking of permission and so forth for the elder maternal great-grandfathers and others. / "Om, to the deities named Vasu and Satya, this food with clarified butter, water, condiments, jujubes, and curds, free from prohibited items, obeisance"—this is the determination of the food. / "Om, of such-and-such gotra, O my grandmother of such-and-such name, of the Nāndīmukha class, this food with jujubes and curds, obeisance." / Likewise for the maternal grandfather and maternal great-grandfathers.

1.219.7

Listen, I shall declare in detail the ekoddiṣṭa rite that is necessarily to be performed beforehand: / First, invitation, washing of the feet, and offering a seat: / "Today, for my father of such-and-such gotra, of such-and-such name, I shall perform the annual ekoddiṣṭa-śrāddha among you with cooked food." / Seeking permission to perform the śrāddha, seat, offering of perfumes and so on, dedication of the food; / silent recitation; wearing the sacred thread like a garland; / having turned toward the north, one should perform the atithi-śrāddha.

1.219.8

Then, having perceived satisfaction, facing south, wearing the sacred thread over the right shoulder [prācīnāvītin], near the remnants of the meal: scattering the food with the formula, "Those who have been consumed by fire..."; / "O my father of such-and-such gotra, of such-and-such name, cleanse yourself with this water, and whoever follows you here, and whoever follows you, to him and to you, svadhā," thus pouring a stream of water along the line. / The remainder is as described before.

1.219.8.p1

Thus ends the two hundred and nineteenth chapter, titled ["The Rules for Ekoddiṣṭa and Other Śrāddhas"], in the Ācārakāṇḍa of the first part in the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
