1.229.1

Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — [Chapter] 229.
Sūta said:
Serving Hari, the Lord of all the worlds, is the supreme essence.
Whoever offers flowers and water with the Puruṣasūkta,

1.229.2

by him this entire world, moving and unmoving, would be worshipped.
Whoever does not worship Viṣṇu should be known as a killer of a brāhmaṇa.

1.229.3

He from whom is the origin of beings, by whom all this is pervaded—
he who does not meditate on that Viṣṇu becomes a worm in feces.

1.229.4

Cooked in hell, he is indeed addressed by Yama:
'Why was the god Keśava, the destroyer of distress, not worshipped by you?

1.229.5

When even with water, in the absence of materials, the Lord is worshipped,
he gives his own world; why was he not worshipped by you?'

1.229.6

That which a mother does not do, nor a father, nor even a relative,
Hṛṣīkeśa does when pleased through worship with faith.

1.229.7

Viṣṇu, the Supreme Person, is worshipped
by a person who observes the conduct of caste and life-stages; there is no other path that pleases him.

1.229.8

Not by various gifts given, nor by flowers, nor by ointments
does that great-souled Janārdana attain satisfaction as he does by devotion.

1.229.9

Not by riches, lordly power, greatness, progeny, nor by action
is oneness to be attained with the liberated; worship of Hari is the root.

1.229.9.p1

Thus ends the two hundred and twenty-ninth chapter, entitled 'Ascertainment of the Worship of Viṣṇu', in the section on Conduct, in the first part called the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
