Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 232
Sūta said: / I shall declare the nectar of the lineage, the praise which Hara spoke / when questioned by Nārada; hear it as [he said it] to Nārada.
1.232.2
Nārada said: / The living being who in saṃsāra is ever bound by the pairs of opposites, by desire and anger, auspicious and inauspicious, / and bound and afflicted by sense-objects such as sound, foolish in mind —
1.232.3
how is that living being freed in an instant from the ocean of death and saṃsāra? / Lord, Destroyer of Tripura, I wish to hear [this] from you.
1.232.4
Hearing those words of his, of Nārada, the three-eyed / Śambhu, Hara, with a gracious face, spoke to that sage.
1.232.5
Maheśvara said: / The supreme secret, the mystery, the nectar of knowledge, O best of sages, / I will declare to you, which destroys sorrow and removes the fear of the bonds of existence; listen.
1.232.6
From a blade of grass up to the four-faced [Brahmā], the fourfold aggregate of beings, / the entire universe, moving and unmoving, is asleep through his māyā.
1.232.7
If anyone is awakened by the grace of that Viṣṇu, / he crosses over saṃsāra, which is impassable even for the gods.
1.232.8
Intoxicated with the pride of enjoyment and sovereignty, turning their faces away from the knowledge of reality, / drunk on sons, wives, and families, living beings sink down.
1.232.9
All are plunged into the single ocean like decrepit wild elephants; / but the foolish person who binds himself like a silkworm,
1.232.10
for him I see no liberation even in hundreds of millions of births. / Therefore, Nārada, filled with joy, one should always properly worship / and meditate upon the imperishable Viṣṇu, the god of all gods.
1.232.11
He who always meditates upon Viṣṇu, the all, without beginning or end, unborn, situated within the self, / omniscient, and immovable, is liberated.
1.232.12
Always meditating upon the divine Viṣṇu, who enters the womb [of the universe], one is liberated; / always meditating upon the bodiless Creator, the delight of all knowledge and mind, / the immovable, all-pervading Viṣṇu, one is liberated.
1.232.13
Without conceptual construct, devoid of appearance, free from manifold expansion, free from affliction, / always meditating upon Vāsudeva, the guru, Viṣṇu, one is liberated.
1.232.14
Comprising all, indeed, as the nature of the self’s consciousness, / auspicious, the single syllable, always meditating upon Viṣṇu, one is liberated.
1.232.15
Beyond speech, knowing the three times, lord of the universe, witness of the world, / higher than all, always meditating upon Viṣṇu, one is liberated.
1.232.16
Served by Brahmā and the other gods, the gandharvas, sages, siddhas, cāraṇas, / and yogins, always meditating upon Viṣṇu, one is liberated.
1.232.17
The world entirely, desiring release from the bondage of saṃsāra, / having praised thus the boon-giving Viṣṇu, always meditating [on him], is liberated.
1.232.18
Anyone desiring release from the bondage of saṃsāra, concentrated in mind, / always meditating upon the infinite, imperishable god Viṣṇu, established in the universe, / the lord of the universe, unborn Viṣṇu, is liberated.
1.232.19
Sūta said: / Thus questioned in ancient times by Nārada, the Bull-bannered [Śiva] / explained it to him, and that has been related by me to you.
1.232.20
Constantly meditating upon him alone, the imperishable, partless Brahman, / you will certainly attain, dear one, the eternal, imperishable state.
1.232.21
Thousands of horse-sacrifices and hundreds of vājapeya sacrifices / do not equal a sixteenth part of a moment of a single-pointed mind.
1.232.22
Having heard from Īśvara this supremacy of Viṣṇu, / that divine sage, having properly worshipped Viṣṇu, became perfected and attained the supreme state.
1.232.23
Whoever recites or hears this best of praises constantly, / even his sin committed in tens of millions of births is destroyed.
1.232.24
Whoever recites with effort every day this divine praise of Viṣṇu, / proclaimed by Mahādeva, goes to immortality.
1.232.24.p1
Thus ends the two hundred and thirty-second chapter, entitled 'The Kulāmṛtastotra', in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
