1.31.1

Glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 31 / Rudra said: / O Lord of the Universe, tell me once more, O Master, of the worship / by which I may cross over the ocean of saṃsāra, which is so difficult to cross.

1.31.2

Hari said: / I shall declare the worship of the divine Viṣṇu, O bull-bannered god; / listen to that, O fortunate one, which grants enjoyment and liberation, and is auspicious.

1.31.3

Having taken a bath and then performed the twilight worship, one should go to the house of sacrifice, / having washed one's hands and feet, and especially having sipped water.

1.31.4

One should place the entire root mantra pervasively upon the two hands. / Hear the root mantra of the god, O Rudra, I shall speak it to you:

1.31.5

"Oṃ śrīṃ hrīṃ obeisance to Viṣṇu, bearer of Śrī." / This mantra expresses the lord of the gods, Viṣṇu the Lord.

1.31.6

It removes all illnesses, and likewise dispels all [malefic] planets; / it destroys all sins, and bestows enjoyment and liberation.

1.31.7

The discerning one should then perform the placement on the limbs with these mantras: / "Oṃ hāṃ to the heart, namaḥ!" / "Oṃ hīṃ to the head, svāhā!" / "Oṃ hūṃ to the tuft of hair, vaṣaṭ!" / "Oṃ haiṃ to the armour, huṃ!" / "Oṃ hauṃ to the three eyes, vauṣaṭ!" / "Oṃ haḥ to the weapon, phaṭ!"

1.31.8

Thus has the mantra been proclaimed to you by me, the mighty one. / Having performed the placement on oneself, one who has conquered himself should show the seal [mudrā].

1.31.9

Then one should meditate upon the supreme Viṣṇu dwelling within the hollow of the heart— / Hari, equipped with conch and discus, white as jasmine or the moon,

1.31.10

endowed with the Śrīvatsa and the Kaustubha, accompanied by a forest garland, / joined with a gem necklace and a crown, the Supreme Lord.

1.31.11

Meditating, "I am Viṣṇu," and having performed purification and the rest, / and having made it firm through the seed-syllables "yaṃ kṣaiṃ ram" and the names,

1.31.12

and then having produced the egg, one should split it with the Praṇava itself. / Imagining there the form described earlier, O Bull-bannered One,

1.31.13

one should then perform worship of oneself with auspicious perfumes, flowers, and other offerings. / Having invoked them, one should worship all the deities belonging to the seat,

1.31.14

with these mantras, O Mahādeva. Hear that mantra, O Śaṅkara: / "Deities of Viṣṇu's seat, come forth!"

1.31.15

Oṃ, obeisance to Acyuta along with all his retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Dhātṛ! / Oṃ, obeisance to Vidhātṛ! / Oṃ, obeisance to Gaṅgā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Yamunā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Śaṅkhanidhi! / Oṃ, obeisance to Padmanidhi! / Oṃ, obeisance to Caṇḍa! / Oṃ, obeisance to Pracaṇḍa! / Oṃ, obeisance to Dvāraśrī! / Oṃ, obeisance to Ādhāraśakti! / Oṃ, obeisance to Kūrma! / Oṃ, obeisance to Ananta! / Oṃ, obeisance to Śrī! / Oṃ, obeisance to Dharma! / Oṃ, obeisance to Knowledge! / Oṃ, obeisance to Dispassion! / Oṃ, obeisance to Sovereignty! / Oṃ, obeisance to Adharma! / Oṃ, obeisance to Ignorance! / Oṃ, obeisance to Attachment! / Oṃ, obeisance to Lack of Sovereignty! / Oṃ saṃ, obeisance to Sattva! / Oṃ raṃ, obeisance to Rajas! / Oṃ taṃ, obeisance to Tamas! / Oṃ kaṃ, obeisance to the bulb! / Oṃ naṃ, obeisance to the stalk! / Oṃ lāṃ, obeisance to the lotus! / Oṃ aṃ, obeisance to the orb of the sun! / Oṃ soṃ, obeisance to the orb of the moon! / Oṃ vaṃ, obeisance to the orb of fire! / Oṃ, obeisance to Vimalā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Utkarṣiṇī! / Oṃ, obeisance to Jñānā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Kriyā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Yogā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Prahvī! / Oṃ, obeisance to Satyā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Īśānā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Anugrahā!

1.31.16

With perfumes, flowers, and the like, and with these mantras, one should worship these. / Having worshipped them, then, having invoked Viṣṇu,

1.31.17

the agent of creation and dissolution, into the maṇḍala, O Rudra, one should worship the Supreme Lord / according to this rule, O Rudra—the supreme dispeller of all sins.

1.31.18

As on oneself, so on the god one should first perform the placement; / one should then display the seal [mudrā], and after that offer the water-offering and other gifts.

1.31.19

Then one should perform bathing, offer cloth, and then water for sipping; / one should offer perfume, flowers, incense, a lamp, and then sacred food.

1.31.20

Then circumambulation, then recitation; then one should surrender [the merit] to him. / And with their own mantras the practitioner should perform the worship of the limbs and the rest,

1.31.21

with the root mantra of the god—know it to be thus, O Bull-bannered One! / Hear the mantras, O Three-eyed One, as they are now being spoken by me:

1.31.22

Oṃ hāṃ, obeisance to the heart! / Oṃ hīṃ, obeisance to the head! / Oṃ hūṃ, obeisance to the tuft of hair! / Oṃ haiṃ, obeisance to the armour! / Oṃ hauṃ, obeisance to the three eyes! / Oṃ haḥ, obeisance to the weapon! / Oṃ, obeisance to Śrī! / Oṃ, obeisance to the conch! / Oṃ, obeisance to the lotus! / Oṃ, obeisance to the discus! / Oṃ, obeisance to the mace! / Oṃ, obeisance to the Śrīvatsa! / Oṃ, obeisance to the Kaustubha! / Oṃ, obeisance to the forest garland! / Oṃ, obeisance to the yellow garment! / Oṃ, obeisance to the sword! / Oṃ, obeisance to the pestle! / Oṃ, obeisance to the noose! / Oṃ, obeisance to the goad! / Oṃ, obeisance to the bow Śārṅga! / Oṃ, obeisance to the arrow! / Oṃ, obeisance to Brahmā! / Oṃ, obeisance to Nārada! / Oṃ, obeisance to the former perfected ones! / Oṃ, obeisance to the Bhāgavatas! / Oṃ, obeisance to the gurus! / Oṃ, obeisance to the supreme gurus! / Oṃ, obeisance to Indra, lord of the gods, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Agni, lord of brilliance, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Yama, lord of the spirits, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Nirṛti, lord of the rākṣasas, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Varuṇa, lord of the waters, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Vāyu, lord of vital breath, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Soma, lord of constellations, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Īśāna, lord of sacred knowledge, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Ananta, lord of serpents, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to Brahmā, lord of worlds, with his mount and retinue! / Oṃ, obeisance to the thunderbolt, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the spear, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the staff, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the sword, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the noose, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the banner, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the mace, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the trident, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the discus, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ, obeisance to the lotus, huṃ phaṭ! / Oṃ vaiṃ, obeisance to Viṣvaksena!

1.31.23

With these mantras, O Mahādeva, the limbs and others are to be worshipped by men. / Having worshipped the great-souled Viṣṇu whose essence is Brahman,

1.31.24

one should praise the imperishable Supreme Self with this hymn of praise: / "Obeisance indeed to Viṣṇu, God of gods, the mighty creator!

1.31.25

Obeisance to Viṣṇu, to Vāsudeva, and to the maintainer [of the universe]! / Obeisance to the consumer, and obeisance to him who lies upon the cosmic dissolution!

1.31.26

Obeisance to the source of the gods, and to the source of sacrifices; / always the source of sages, and the mighty creator of the yakṣas!"

1.31.27

To the victorious among all the gods, to the all-pervading Great Self,

1.31.28

To the one who seeks the welfare of all worlds, to the Overseer of the worlds, obeisance!

1.31.29

To the giver of boons, the tranquil, the most choice, obeisance, obeisance!

1.31.30

Having praised him, one should meditate in one's heart on the imperishable one whose form is Brahman.

1.31.31

The person who recites the root mantra goes to Hari.

1.31.32

The supreme mystery, secret, bestowing worldly enjoyment and liberation, supreme.
