The Venerable Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 32
1.32.2
Hari said:
1.32.3
Listen to it, O Mahādeva, purifying and destroying [the sins of the age of] Kali.
1.32.4
Vāsudeva, constant, pure, all-pervading, unstained.
1.32.5
Viṣṇu, who grants grace to the worlds and destroys all wicked beings,
1.32.6
And abiding in the form of Pradyumna and named Aniruddha,
1.32.7
Listen to these expressive mantras of theirs, O bull-bannered one!
1.32.8
Five mantras have been declared to you as expressing the gods;
1.32.9
Now I shall fully declare the auspicious worship of the five principles,
1.32.10
First, one should bathe; having bathed, one should perform the twilight devotion.
1.32.11
Having sipped water, the wise one should sit, assuming a desired posture.
1.32.12
Having hardened the common [body], one should then produce the [cosmic] egg.
1.32.13
Vāsudeva, the Lord of the World, wearing yellow silk garments,
1.32.14
One should meditate on the Supreme Lord in the lotus of one's heart.
1.32.15
Then Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and the glorious Nārāyaṇa,
1.32.16
One should contemplate [them], and then one should perform the ritual placement on the two hands.
1.32.17
With the limb-mantras, O Mahādeva! Listen to those mantras, O one of good vows!
1.32.18
Oṃ obeisance to Acyuta with his entire retinue.
1.32.19
These mantras have been declared to you in brief, O Rudra.
1.32.20
Oṃ obeisance to the Lotus.
1.32.21
A man should next worship the seat, having invoked [him] according to the rules.
1.32.22
One should worship Garuḍa in front of Vāsudeva, O Śaṅkara;
1.32.23
Dharma, knowledge, dispassion, and sovereignty [are to be worshipped] starting from the east;
1.32.24
The position of the seat is taught in the middle of the three circles;
1.32.25
In the pericarp one should worship Vāsudeva, the Supreme Lord;
1.32.26
And the powers of the God of gods [are to be worshipped] starting from the east, O Śaṅkara;
1.32.27
Below, the serpent; and above that, the wise one should worship Brahmā.
1.32.28
Having invoked the god into the maṇḍala and performed the ritual placement for him,
1.32.29
One should offer a bath, garments, sipping water, perfumes, flowers, and incense, / a lamp, food offering, sipping water, obeisance, and circumambulation, / O Śaṅkara, with the root-mantra, and one should also dedicate the recitation.
1.32.30
Then one should recite this hymn, meditating upon Vāsudeva: / ‘Oṃ, obeisance to Vāsudeva, and obeisance to Saṃkarṣaṇa;
1.32.31
Obeisance, obeisance to Pradyumna, the primeval god, and to Aniruddha; / obeisance indeed to Nārāyaṇa, to Nara, to the Lord of men;
1.32.32
To the one worthy of men’s worship, worthy of renown, worthy of praise, and the granter of boons; / obeisance, obeisance to the one without beginning or end, the ancient one;
1.32.33
To the author of creation and destruction, and obeisance to the Lord of Brahman; / to the mind, indeed to the one known through the Vedas, and the wielder of the conch and discus;
1.32.34
To the remover of the defilements of the Kali age, and obeisance, obeisance to the lord of the gods; / to the cutter of the tree of transmigratory existence, and obeisance, obeisance to the piercer of delusion;
1.32.35
To the multiform one, the sacred ford, the one possessing the three guṇas and the devoid of guṇas; / obeisance, obeisance to the giver of liberation, having the form of Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva;
1.32.36
To the gateway to liberation, to dharma, obeisance, obeisance to the ultimate release; / to the granter of all desires, whose essential nature is the supreme Brahman.
1.32.37
Deliver me who am submerged in the terrible ocean of transmigratory existence; / there is none other than you, O Lord of Gods, there is no savior, O Lord of the World!
1.32.38
I have gone to you for refuge, to all-pervading Viṣṇu; / illuminate me, freed from darkness, by bestowing the lamp of knowledge.’
1.32.39
Thus one should praise the Lord of Gods, the destroyer of all afflictions, / and having praised him with other hymns accompanied by musical instruments, O Nīlalohita,
1.32.40
A man should meditate in his heart on Viṣṇu endowed with the five elements, / and then dismiss the god. Thus the worship has been proclaimed.
1.32.41
This excellent [worship] of Vāsudeva grants all desires, O Śaṅkara; / merely by this worship a man achieves his purpose.
1.32.42
And whatever man reads this worship of the five elements, O Rudra, / or listens to it or causes others to hear it, he goes to the world of Viṣṇu.
1.32.42.p1
Thus in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa, in the first section called the first part, in the section on conduct, the thirty-second chapter entitled ‘The Rule for the Worship of the Five Elements (of Viṣṇu)’.
