1.39.1

The holy Garuḍa Purāṇa: [Chapter] 39. / Rudra said: / "Speak again briefly, Janārdana, on the worship of the deity— / of Sūrya who has the form of Viṣṇu, which bestows worldly enjoyment and liberation."

1.39.2

Vāsudeva said: / "Listen, Rudra: I shall declare again the worship of Sūrya. / 'Oṃ, homage to Uccaiḥśravas. Oṃ, homage to Aruṇa. / Oṃ, homage to Daṇḍin. / Oṃ, homage to Piṅgala.' / These, indeed, O bull-bannered one, are to be worshipped at the gate with these mantras:

1.39.3

'Oṃ, aṃ, homage to Prabhūta.' / One should worship this one named Prabhūtāmala in the center: / 'Oṃ, aṃ, homage to Vimala. / Oṃ, aṃ, homage to Sāra. / Oṃ, aṃ, homage to Ādhāra. / Oṃ, aṃ, homage to Paramamukha.' / Thus, in the corners beginning with the southeast, Vimala and the others are to be worshipped.

1.39.4

'Oṃ, homage to the lotus. / Oṃ, homage to the pericarp.' / One should worship in the center, Rudra, and likewise in the east and the other [directions]. / One should worship Dīptā and the others in the center; one should worship the all-facing ones: / 'Oṃ vāṃ (rāṃ), homage to Dīptā. / Oṃ vīṃ (rīṃ), homage to Sūkṣmā. / Oṃ vūṃ (rūṃ), homage to Bhadrā. / Oṃ vaiṃ (raiṃ), homage to Jayā. / Oṃ vauṃ (rauṃ), homage to Vibhūti. / Oṃ vaṃ (raṃ), homage to Aghorā. / Oṃ vaṃ (raṃ), homage to Vaidyutā. / Oṃ vaḥ (raḥ), homage to Vijayā. / Oṃ roṃ, homage to Sarvatomukhī.'"

1.39.5

"Om, homage to the seat of the Sun.
Om hrāṃ, homage to the embodiment of the Sun."
One should worship these in the center. Listen to the mantras of the heart, O Śaṅkara:
"Om haṃ saṃ khaṃ khakholkāya krāṃ krīṃ saḥ svāhā, homage to the embodiment of the Sun."
With this one should perform the invocation, the installation, the bringing near,
the confrontation with its mantra, and likewise the endowment with parts.

1.39.6

One should show the mudrā, O Rudra, or [do so] with the root mantra, O Hara:
[meditating on him] whose form is radiance, red in color, seated upon a white lotus,
mounted on a one-wheeled chariot, two-armed, holding lotuses.

1.39.7

Thus should one constantly meditate on the Sun; and hear the root mantra:
"Om hrāṃ hrīṃ saḥ, homage to the Sun."

1.39.8

Three times one should show the lotus-mudrā and the orb-mudrā:
"Om āṃ, homage to the heart.
Om, svāhā to the head, to the Sun.
Om aḥ bhūḥ bhuvaḥ svaḥ jvālini, vaṣaṭ to the tuft of hair.
Om huṃ, huṃ to the armor.
Om bhāṃ, vauṣaṭ to the two eyes.
Om vaḥ, phaṭ to the weapon."

1.39.9

In the south-east or in the north-east, [or] in the south-west one should worship, O Hara,
the heart and the other [limbs]; in the north-west and within, one should worship the eye.

1.39.10

One should worship the weapon in the directions, O Rudra, and Soma of white color.
On the eastern petal one should worship, O Rudra, Budha shining like gold.

1.39.11

In the south one should worship, O Rudra, [and] worship Guru of yellow color;
and in the west, O Lord of Ghosts; in the north, the white Bhārgava.

1.39.12

And red Aṅgāraka one should worship in the south-east, O Hara;
Śanaiścara of black color one should worship in the south-west direction.

1.39.13

Rāhu in the north-western region, resembling a nandyāvarta blossom, O Hara;
in the north-east, smoky-colored Ketu one should worship completely.

1.39.14

With these mantras, O Mahādeva—hear that, O Śaṅkara:

1.39.15

"Om soṃ, homage to Soma.
Om buṃ, homage to Budha.
Om bṛṃ, homage to Bṛhaspati.
Om bhaṃ, homage to Bhārgava.
Om aṃ, homage to Aṅgāraka.
Om śaṃ, homage to Śanaiścara.
Om raṃ, homage to Rāhu.
Om kaṃ, homage to Ketu."

1.39.16

Having offered water for the feet and other offerings with the root mantra to the Sun, O Śaṅkara,
at the conclusion of the food offering the best of practitioners should display the cow-mudrā.

1.39.17

Having recited [the mantra] eight thousand times, he should dedicate that to him.
In the north-eastern direction, O Lord of Ghosts, one should worship Tejaścaṇḍa:

1.39.18

"Om, to Tejaścaṇḍa huṃ phaṭ svadhā svāhā pauṣaṭ."
And one should present the leftover offerings to him; then, O Hara, one should offer the arghya,

1.39.19

combined with sesamum and rice grains, smeared with red sandalwood,
mixed with fragrant water, accompanied by flowers and incense.

1.39.20

Placing that vessel on his head, having gone to the earth on both knees,
he should offer the arghya to the Sun with that mantra, O you who have a bull on your banner.

1.39.21

Having worshipped the troop and the gurus, one should then worship all the gods:
"Om gaṃ, homage to Gaṇapati.
Om aṃ, homage to the gurus."

1.39.22

The worship of the Sun has been described; having performed it, one attains the world of Viṣṇu.

1.39.22.p1

Thus ends the thirty-ninth chapter, entitled "The Manner of Worshipping the Sun", in the section on customary conduct in the first part of the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
