1.54.2

and Jyotiṣmat born as the tenth—these were the sons from Priyavrata. / Three sons, Medhas, Agnibāhu, and [his brother], were devoted to yoga;

1.54.3

remembering their past lives, highly fortunate, they did not desire kingship. / Dividing the seven continents, the king gave them to the seven.

1.54.4

Covering fifty crore yojanas in measure, / the earth rests upon the water, floating like a boat on the water of a river.

1.54.5

The two continents named Jambū and Plakṣa, and another is Śālmala, O Hara; / Kuśa, Krauñca, and Śāka, and Puṣkara is the seventh.

1.54.6

These seven continents are surrounded by seven oceans / containing salt, sugar-cane juice, wine, clarified butter, curd, milk, and water respectively.

1.54.7

Each continent and each ocean is twice the size [of the preceding], O bull-bannered Lord. / Situated on Jambūdvīpa is Mount Meru, one hundred thousand yojanas wide.

1.54.8

Its height is eighty-four thousand yojanas; / it has entered sixteen [thousand yojanas] beneath, and is thirty-two [thousand] wide at the summit.

1.54.9

Beneath it is sixteen thousand [yojanas], situated in the shape of a lotus pericarp. / Himavat, Hemakūṭa, and Niṣadha are to its south;

1.54.10

Nīla, Śveta, and Śṛṅgin are the boundary mountains to the north. / The eternal men, O Rudra, who dwell on Plakṣa and the others,

1.54.11

O Śaṅkara, have no condition of yugas at all among them. / From Āgnīdhra, the lord of Jambūdvīpa, there were nine sons:

1.54.12

Nābhi, Kiṃpuruṣa, Harivarṣa, Ilāvṛta, / Ramya, the one named Hiraṇmaya, Kuru, and Bhadrāśva.

1.54.13

and King Ketumāla. He gave them the realms named after themselves. / From Nābhi and Merudevī, O Hara, was born Ṛṣabha.

1.54.14

His son was named Bharata, who observed vows and dwelt at Śālagrāma. / Sumati was the son of Bharata, and his son was Taijasa.

1.54.15

His son was Indradyumna, after whom Parameṣṭhin is remembered; / Pratīhāra was his son, and Pratihartā was his son.

1.54.16

From him then was born a son, Prastāra; his son was the mighty Vibhu; / his son was Pṛthu; Nakta was his, and Gaya is remembered as Nakta’s son.

1.54.17

Nara was the son of Gaya; his son was Virāṭ; / after him came the wise, exceptionally splendid Bhauvana, who was his son.

1.54.18

Then came Tvaṣṭṛ, and Tvaṣṭṛ’s son was Virajas; Rajas also was his son; / Śatajit was the son of Rajas, and Viṣvagjyotis is remembered as his son.

1.54.18.p1
