1.57.1

Garuḍa Purāṇa 57
Hari said: / The height of the underworld is also declared to be seventy thousand [yojanas]; / each subterranean realm, O bull-bannered [Śiva], measures ten thousand [yojanas].

1.57.2

Atala, Vitala, Nitala, Gabhastimat, / Mahātala, the foremost Sutala, and Pātāla as the seventh.

1.57.3

Black, white, reddish, yellow, pebbly, rocky, and golden [are their soils]; / moreover, Daityas and serpents dwell there.

1.57.4

Now, in terrible Puṣkaradvīpa there are hells; listen to them: / Raurava, Sūkara, Rodha, Tāla, and likewise Vinaśana;

1.57.5

Mahājvāla, Taptakumbha, Lavaṇa, then Vimohita, / that named Rudhira, Vaitaraṇī, Kṛmiśa, Kṛmibhojana;

1.57.6

Asipatravana, Kṛṣṇa, and the dreadful Nānābhakṣa; / likewise Pūyavaha, Pāpa, Vahnijvāla, and Adhaḥśiras;

1.57.7

Saṃdaṃśa, Kṛṣṇasūtra, Tamas, and Avīci, / Śvabhojana, then Apratiṣṭha, and Uṣṇavīci are remembered as hells.

1.57.8

Sinners who administer poison, weapons, and fire are cooked in them. / Above and above them, O Rudra, are established the worlds: Bhūr and the others.

1.57.9

Encompassed by water, fire, wind, space, and the primal element, / that cosmic egg, O Rudra, is surrounded by the Great Principle and Pradhāna.

1.57.10

Each enveloping layer is tenfold the cosmic egg; Nārāyaṇa stands [beyond].

1.57.10.p1

Thus ends the fifty-seventh chapter, entitled 'Description of the Subterranean Realms, Hells, and Others within the Cosmic Spheres', in the Section on Conduct, the first part of the first section of the glorious Garuḍa Purāṇa.
