### [1.67.1](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.1)

Śrī Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa — 67 / (Thus ends the science of astrology.) / Sūta said: / Having heard \[it\] from Hari, Hara explained to Gaurī the knowledge residing in the body:

### [1.67.2](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.2)

Mars is said to be fire, the Sun earth, and Saturn water. / Rāhu, residing in the state of wind, illuminates the right aperture.

### [1.67.3](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.3)

Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon as the fourth— / one should likewise establish them in the left channel, and \[the others\] in the central one for oneself.

### [1.67.4](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.4)

When the breath moves in conjunction with the iḍā, one should undertake actions \[such as\] / serving at a holy place, meditation, trade, and visiting the king.

### [1.67.5](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.5)

One should diligently perform other auspicious actions. / But when the flow is in the right channel, Saturn, Mars, Rāhu,

### [1.67.6](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.6)

and the Sun \[rule\], and then the rise of malefics occurs. / Indeed, discernment between auspicious and inauspicious is known through svarodaya.

### [1.67.7](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.7)

Within the body abide the channels, multiform and very extensive. / From the bulb situated below the navel, sprouts have emerged there;

### [1.67.8](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.8)

seventy-two thousand \[channels\] are situated in the center of the navel. / Residing like a wheel, they are all remembered as carriers of breath.

### [1.67.9](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.9)

Among them, three are foremost: the left, the right, and the middle. / The left is declared to have the nature of the Moon; the right resembles the Sun;

### [1.67.10](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.10)

and the middle is fire, bearing fruit and fulfilling time. / For the left has the nature of nectar, abiding to nourish the universe;

### [1.67.11](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.11)

the right, with its fierce portion, always dries up the world. / When there is flow in both, death occurs, destroying all undertakings.

### [1.67.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.12)

The left is considered \[active\] in departure, and the right in entry. / When the movement is in the iḍā, it is gentle, moving \[respectively\] in Moon and Sun.

### [1.67.13](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.13)

One should perform fierce deeds when the breath resides in the piṅgalā. / In travel, in all undertakings, and in the removal of poison, the iḍā \[is beneficial\].

### [1.67.14](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.14)

In eating, sexual union, and battle, the piṅgalā grants success. / In these acts—eradication, killing, and the like—the piṅgalā \[is used\].

### [1.67.15](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.15)

And in sexual union, combat, and eating, it grants success. / In auspicious actions, in travel, and in works concerning poison,

### [1.67.16](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.16)

for peace, liberation, and the attainment of wealth, kings should employ the iḍā. / When the flow is in both, avoiding both fierce and gentle \[actions\],

### [1.67.17](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.17)

the wise person should know it to be like poison and remember \[the divine\]. / In gentle and other auspicious deeds, in gain, victory, and life,

### [1.67.18](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.18)

and in going and coming, the left is praised everywhere. / In battle and the like, eating, slaying, and union with women,

### [1.67.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.19)

the right channel is commended; \[so too\] in entry and in lesser rituals. / Regarding actions auspicious and inauspicious, gain and loss, victory and defeat,

### [1.67.20](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.20)

or life and death, whatever is asked does not succeed \[if the flow is in\] the middle \[channel\]. / When the inquirer is confident \[whether breath is\] in the left or right course,

### [1.67.21](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.21)

and asks while stationed in his body, there is success, no doubt. / When Vāmadeva flows freely according to will in oneself,

### [1.67.22](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.22)

if one standing in that part makes an inquiry, the success proves fruitless. / In the left or in the right, wherever the auspicious \[breath\] moves,

### [1.67.23](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.23)

in the terrible \[channel\] terrible actions \[are done\], and in the gentle \[channel\] moderate ones. / When the breath-swan has set out from a portion, or when it flows entirely through both,

### [1.67.24](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.24)

then the yogin skilled in yoga should recognize death. / Wherever stationed the inquirer asks, facing the left or the right,

### [1.67.25](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.25)

in that very place one should always indicate equally the rising of the wind. / In front, the left is best; from behind, the right is auspicious;

### [1.67.26](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.26)

by the left the left is declared \[best\], and on the right the right is auspicious. / On the left the left is auspicious, and on the right the right is auspicious.

### [1.67.27](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.27)

The living thrives through the living \[channel\]; that which is empty brings haste. / Whatever undertaking is indicated, marked by victory and other auspicious signs,

### [1.67.28](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.28)

all that occurs without doubt in the full channel. / From another channel up to the end, three fortnights are spoken of.

### [1.67.29](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.29)

As far as the sixth \[tithi\] in the query: if it is full, the first wins; / but if empty, the second \[wins\]—thus one should declare without hesitation.

### [1.67.30](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.30)

Breath equal to the movement of the left arises granting the success of actions. / When the right path is active, an odd-syllabled \[name succeeds\] on an odd \[condition\].

### [1.67.31](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.31)

In other cases, when the left flows, if the name has an odd number of syllables, / then that warrior attains victory in the midst of battle.

### [1.67.32](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.32)

When the right breath flows, if the name has an even number of syllables, / he wins, there is no doubt here; one should observe \[this\] in the channels.

### [1.67.33](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.33)

When the breath is within the piṅgalā, he will conquer in the battle to be pacified. / As long as the channel is rising in movement, so long should one take that direction;

### [1.67.34](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.34)

even he will not yield—no doubt should be entertained here. / Now, in the midst of battle, whichever channel always flows,

### [1.67.35](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.35)

that direction attains victory; in the empty \[direction\] one should predict defeat. / In the active movement one should know victory; in the dead \[channel\] one should declare death.

### [1.67.36](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.36)

He who knows victory and defeat is truly learned. / In the left or in the right, wherever the auspicious \[breath\] moves,

### [1.67.37](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.37)

having stepped \[with\] that foot, one attains \[success\]; the journey is continuously prosperous. / Only when the flow of the Moon and the Sun is \[favorable\] should one engage in battle.

### [1.67.38](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.38)

The good person who stands there and asks certainly wins. / Toward whichever direction the wind blows, in that direction victory extends;

### [1.67.39](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.39)

there is no doubt here, if the Moon is stationed in front. / The ten channels beginning with Meṣī, stationed on the right and left,

### [1.67.40](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.40)

in movable, fixed, and divergent courses, in such and such an order, / in departure go to departure; in retention they know retention.

### [1.67.41](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.41)

Having heard the words of the inquirer, one should examine them like the sound of a bell. / Stationed in the five elements in the auspicious \[breath\], whether in the left or the right:

### [1.67.42](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.42)

fire is above, water below, and wind resides crosswise; / earth is to be known in the center, and ether is everywhere and always.

### [1.67.43](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.1.67.43)

Above brings death, below brings peace, and the wise person should cause eradication crosswise; / in the center one should recognize immobilization, and liberation is everywhere in that which goes everywhere.
