1.8.1

The Holy Garuḍa Purāṇa — [Chapter] 8 / Hari said: / Having bathed, one should worship Viṣṇu in a pavilion erected on the ground, in a maṇḍala, / indeed the Vajranābha maṇḍala, [drawn] with powder of five colours.

1.8.2

There one should make it measured with sixteen squares, O Rudra; / one should stretch the thread in the fourth and fifth corners.

1.8.3

The wise practitioner should also lay out the thread / across the corners situated on both sides of the diagonal line.

1.8.4

In the corners immediately adjacent to them, one should do the very same. / The first navel is designated at the intersection of the lines in the centre.

1.8.5

And in all the intervals there are eight navels. / One should then swing the thread between the eastern and central navels.

1.8.6

In between, that best of the twice-born should swing [it] reduced by a quarter, O Hara! / With this thread from the navel, one should trace the pericarp, O Śiva!

1.8.7

With two parts of the pericarp, the wise man [draws] the filaments; / beyond that, the learned one should ever draw the petals.

1.8.8

In all the navel-fields, by this measurement, O true observer of vows, / the teacher who knows the supreme truth should construct those lotuses.

1.8.9

By division of the initial line, one should design the gates; / and one should fashion the decoration of the gate there with half of that.

1.8.10

The pericarp [is coloured] with yellow, the filaments with white, red, and the like, / the intervening space with blue, and the petals with dark blue.

1.8.11

One should fill the square with black powder, / the gates with white, and there are five lines in the maṇḍala:

1.8.12

white, red, yellow, and black, in due order. / Having first made the maṇḍala and performed the nyāsa, one should worship Hari.

1.8.13

One should place Viṣṇu in the middle of the heart, and Saṅkarṣaṇa in the throat; / having placed Pradyumna on the head, [one should place] Aniruddha on the crest,

1.8.14

Brahmā on all limbs, and Śrīdhara on the two hands. / Meditating, "I am Viṣṇu," one should place Hari in the pericarp.

1.8.15

One should place Saṅkarṣaṇa in the east, and Pradyumna in the south; / one should place Aniruddha in the west, and Brahmā in the north.

1.8.16

One should place Śrīdhara in the intermediate corners, O Rudra, and Indra and the others in the cardinal directions. / Then, having worshipped with perfumes and other offerings, one attains the supreme state.

1.8.16.p1

Thus ends the eighth chapter, named "Description of the Vajranābha Maṇḍala Useful for the Worship of Viṣṇu," in the section on conduct, in the first part called the Pūrvakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Garuḍa Purāṇa.
