1.9.1

The Holy Garuḍa Purāṇa — [Chapter] 9 / Hari said: / For the disciple initiated at the proper time, whose eyes are bound with a cloth, / one should offer a hundred and eight oblations with the root mantra.

1.9.2

The oblation is considered double for a spiritual son, and threefold for an adept; / for an instructor of liberation, O Rudra, it is declared to be fourfold.

1.9.3

The slayer of a guru, of Viṣṇu, of a twice-born, or of women is to be put to death by the uninitiated. / Now I shall explain the initiation that destroys both merit and demerit.

1.9.4

Seating the disciples outside, one should cause concentration to be performed in them; / one should meditate on them being dried up by the airy portion, O Rudra,

1.9.5

and burned by the fiery [portion], then flooded with water. / Uniting that individual soul, brilliance in brilliancy, one should cast it [into the highest state].

1.9.6

One should contemplate the syllable Oṃ in the space [of the heart], and the other cause within the body; / there, one should dissolve each cause of the body from the knower of the field.

1.9.7

Having brought them forth, one should subsequently reunite them one by one, O bull-bannered one. / One who is unable [to construct] the maṇḍala and the rest should mentally project [them] and worship Hari.

1.9.8

And that should have four gates, in succession from the Brahma-tīrtha. / The hand is declared to be the lotus, and the fingers are regarded as the petals.

1.9.9

The palm of the hand is the pericarp, and its nails are the filaments. / There, having meditated upon Hari, one should worship [him] between the sun and fire.

1.9.10

With a concentrated mind, he should place that hand on the head of the disciple. / Because Viṣṇu resides in the hand, this hand is therefore the hand of Viṣṇu; / and from its touch, all sins are destroyed.

1.9.11

Having worshipped the disciple, and having bound [his] eyes with a cloth, / the guru, placing him facing the deity, should then offer a flower. / Wherever the flower falls from the head of the bow-wielding deity,

1.9.12

he should assign that name to him, himself marking [the names] of women with feminine forms; / but for Śūdras, the wise man should assign [a name] joined with "dāsa".

1.9.12.p1

Thus ends the ninth chapter, named “The Description of Initiation into Viṣṇu,” in the ritual section called the first part of the first section in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
