### [2.32.46](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.46)

these ten vital airs are declared to be well established within bodies. / The food consumed alone provides nourishment to all embodied beings;

### [2.32.47](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.47)

the life-giving vital air conducts it through all joints in the body. / But food, as soon as it is eaten, is divided twofold by the vital air:

### [2.32.48](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.48)

entering the stomach properly, it separates the food and separates the water; / placing the water above the fire, and that food upon the water,

### [2.32.49](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.49)

and the prāṇa, standing below the fire, gently fans that fire. / Fanned by the vital air, the fire separates the waste and separates the essence.

### [2.32.50](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.50)

The waste, divided by the twelve impurities, departs from the body: / ears, eyes, nostrils, tongue, teeth, navel, body\[-pores\], anus,

### [2.32.51](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.51)

and the nails are indeed the receptacles of impurity, along with feces and urine as the rest. / From the union of semen and ovum, this \[body\] composed of six sheaths is remembered.

### [2.32.52](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.52)

There are thirty-five million body hairs, / and thirty-two teeth are declared as the standard, O son of Vinatā.

### [2.32.53](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.53)

There are seven hundred thousand hairs of the head, and twenty nails are declared; / one thousand palas of flesh are standardly established in the body.

### [2.32.54](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.54)

One hundred palas of blood, O Tārkṣya, was understood by the ancients, / and ten palas of fat, with skin equal to that.

### [2.32.55](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.55)

Twelve palas of marrow, three palas of vital blood; / semen is known to be two kuḍavas, and ovum is remembered as one kuḍava.

### [2.32.56](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.56)

Phlegm is six \[kuḍavas\] or more, and feces and urine in proportion to that; / the bones are indeed declared to exceed three hundred and sixty.

### [2.32.57](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.57)

Thus the body has been described; now we shall declare its condition: / happiness, misery, fear, and well-being are attained solely through karma.

### [2.32.58](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.58)

Head downward and feet upward, the vital air draws \[the fetus\] out from the womb; / placing its hands beneath, it grows beside its knees,

### [2.32.59](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.59)

with both thumbs placed above, fingers against the knees, / the eyes on the surface of the knees, and the nose between the knees.

### [2.32.60](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.60)

In this way the living being situated in the woman's womb gradually grows; / the bones attain hardness, and it lives on what is eaten and drunk \[by the mother\].

### [2.32.61](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.61)

The channel named Āpyāyanī is fastened there to the navel; / attached thus to the cavity of the woman's intestines, it develops.

### [2.32.62](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.62)

Things eaten and drunk enter the womb of women; / nourished by them, this living being attains growth.

### [2.32.63](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.63)

There, many memories of past births in saṃsāra come to it; / then, afflicted from all sides, it experiences despondency:

### [2.32.64](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.64)

"I will never do so again as soon as I am free from this womb; / I will strive in such a way that I shall not enter a womb again!"

### [2.32.65](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.65)

Thus thinking, the individual soul remembers hundreds of births, / which were previously experienced as gods, elements, and living beings.

### [2.32.66](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.66)

Then, in the course of time, the living being is turned downward, / and is born in the ninth or tenth month.

### [2.32.67](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.67)

Being driven out by the prājāpatya wind, it suffers pain; / and it emerges wailing at that time, tormented by misery.

### [2.32.68](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.68)

Coming out of the belly, it falls into an unbearable faint, / and regaining consciousness, it feels pleasure at the contact with air.

### [2.32.69](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.69)

Then the deluding Vaiṣṇava māyā overtakes it; / bewildered by it, that soul suffers the loss of its knowledge.

### [2.32.70](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.70)

Deprived of knowledge, the creature then falls into infancy; / then into childhood, youth, and also old age.

### [2.32.71](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.71)

And again, just so, a human attains death and birth; / then it is whirled around in this wheel of saṃsāra like a water-wheel.

### [2.32.72](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.72)

Sometimes a person reaches heaven, and sometimes hell; / he enjoys heaven and hell as the fruit of his own deeds.

### [2.32.73](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.73)

Sometimes, having consumed his karma, he goes to the earth with a remainder; / when \[karma\] in heaven and in hell is mostly consumed, O best of the twice-born.

### [2.32.74](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.74)

This is great suffering in hells: dwellers in heaven see this / and do not rejoice here, as beings are cast down by the tormentors of hell.

### [2.32.75](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.75)

Even in heaven there is incomparable misery, because from the time of ascent / onward, this thought dwells in the mind: "I shall fall!"

### [2.32.76](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.76)

And beholding the denizens of hell, great sorrow is felt; / thinking, "I too shall go to such a state," one is day and night without peace.

### [2.32.77](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.77)

There is great suffering in living in the womb, and born of the vagina for the one being born; / for the one born there is suffering even in childhood, and suffering in old age,

### [2.32.78](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.78)

and in youth too, intolerable \[pain\] from association with desire, envy, and wrath; / old age is like a nightmare, and in death there is acute agony.

### [2.32.79](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.79)

Dragged by the servants of Yama, he goes down even to hell; / and again there is birth from a womb, and difficult death likewise.

### [2.32.80](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.80)

Thus in this wheel of saṃsāra, living beings, like pots on a water-wheel, / are turned around, bound by previous bonds, and are pierced again and again.

### [2.32.81](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.81)

There is not the slightest happiness, O bird, in this field filled with hundreds of sorrows; / therefore, O son of Vinatā, humans must strive for liberation.

### [2.32.82](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.82)

All this has been explained to you, how the condition of the fetus is; / I shall answer subsequent questions, or whatever inquiry you desire.

### [2.32.83](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.83)

Garuḍa said:
I have received the answer to two of the great questions asked earlier;
let the answer to the third question also be given.

### [2.32.84](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.84)

The blessed Kṛṣṇa said:
You asked, “What is to be done for a dying man?”
Listen, then, to the answer: I shall speak it in brief.

### [2.32.85](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.85)

Knowing a man to be near death, one should then bathe him
with cow urine, cow dung, good earth, water from sacred places, and water with kuśa grass.

### [2.32.86](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.86)

Then, having clothed him in two washed, pure, and auspicious garments,
first spreading out darbha grass and scattering \[it\] with tips pointing south,

### [2.32.87](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.87)

one should place him there, upon the ground smeared with cow dung, \[along with\] sesame seeds.

### [2.32.88](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.88)

Or with his head to the east or north, one should place gold in his mouth;
a Śālagrāma stone and tulasī, O King of Birds,

### [2.32.89](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.89)

should be placed nearby; furthermore, one should light a ghee lamp.
Likewise, there should be recitation: “Obeisance to the Blessed Vāsudeva.”

### [2.32.90](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.90)

Having first uttered the Praṇava, worship and gift-giving are then enjoined.
Then, having worshiped Hṛṣīkeśa with flowers, incense, and other offerings,

### [2.32.91](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.91)

one should worship with prostrations, holy hymns of praise, and the yoga of meditation;
and having given gifts to Brahmins, as well as to the poor and destitute,

### [2.32.92](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.92)

and remembering the feet of Viṣṇu in his heart,
he should turn away his sense of mineness toward sons, friends, wife, fields, grain, wealth, and the like.

### [2.32.93](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.93)

If it is an exceptional distress, then sons and others
should loudly recite the Puruṣasūkta when their own kinsman is dying.

### [2.32.94](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.94)

All this duty when death has arrived has been explained to you;
I will also tell you briefly the fruit of all this.

### [2.32.95](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.95)

By the bath, purity is obtained and impurity is removed;
then the remembrance of Viṣṇu, because of his knowledge, grants all fruits.

### [2.32.96](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.96)

A bed of darbha grass leads the afflicted person to heaven, no doubt;
when sesame seeds and darbha grass are cast down, the bath becomes equal to a Vedic sacrifice.

### [2.32.97](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.97)

Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra, Śrī, and Agni
stand upon the mandala; therefore one should make a mandala.

### [2.32.98](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.98)

With the head directed here to the east or north, he goes to the supreme world,
provided that a man's sin is small, O bird.

### [2.32.99](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.99)

When the five gems are placed in the mouth, knowledge sprouts in the soul.
Tulasī, Brahmins, cows, Viṣṇu, and the Ekādaśī, O bird—

### [2.32.100](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.100)

these are the five boats for men sinking in the ocean of worldly existence:
Viṣṇu, the Ekādaśī, the Gītā, tulasī, and Brahmins’ cows.

### [2.32.101](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.101)

In this worthless, impassable worldly existence, this sixfold practice bestows devotion:
a man reciting “Obeisance to the Blessed Vāsudeva”

### [2.32.102](https://indike.org/pramana/in.purana.garuda~en-mt.2.32.102)

preceded by the syllable Oṃ attains union \[with him\], of this there is no doubt;
