3.8.1
The glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa: [Chapter] 8. / Born after Kratu, [the one] named Mitra, O Lord of Birds, / began to praise Nārāyaṇa, the source of the world.
3.8.2
Mitra said: / 'Ignorant, I bow to your lotus feet, which cut through worldly existence, an auspicious path for cutting through worldly existence. / The Blessed Lord Vāsudeva himself knows; not I, nor Fire, nor the three gods, nor the lords of sages.
3.8.3
Now, when the foremost among other devotees of the Lord do not know, then whence could others? / Protect me always, O Supreme Master, [remembering] that I am always lower than Viśvāmitra; / I have always twice [the qualities] of Parjanya; therefore I have no capacity to praise.'
3.8.4
Having thus praised Hari, Mitra then sat silent, O bird; / after him, the younger Tārā undertook to praise.
3.8.5
Tārā said: / 'Those who practice firm devotion with undivided heart, / having abandoned their rites for your sake, having abandoned their own people and kinsmen,
3.8.6
and having heard of your sanctuary, hear and recount the narrative— / thus are these virtuous ones, O Viṣṇu, free from all attachment.
3.8.7
Protect [me] who have fallen among them, who am always equal to Mitra, O Lord!' / After Tārā, Nirṛti spoke, O Lord of Birds.
3.8.8
Nirṛti said: / 'Through yoga and through devotion offered to you, people go to the supreme state, / and through attendance on those who excel in all virtues, through knowledge accompanied by detachment, O unassailable one,
3.8.9
and through control of the mind alone they attain the supreme abode of Viṣṇu. / Therefore protect me with compassion, [I who am] always equal to Tārā, O Lord!' / After him, his younger [sister] Prāvahī undertook to praise him.
3.8.10
Prāvahī said: / 'Sons are born from virility through association; and by your grace, supreme prosperities arise. / Let there be devotion on the path of liberation through attending to those stories that are an elixir of [the Lord of] excellent fame,
3.8.11
at all times, O God of gods! I am always equal to Nirṛti. / Mitra, [...], and Tārā are proclaimed [together];
3.8.12
and Nirṛti, the lord of the corner, and Prāvahī, beloved of Pravaha— / these four are declared to have three times [the qualities] of Parjanya.
3.8.13
I shall speak of those born after them; listen to them, O Lord of Birds! / Born after the wife of Pravaha, the attendant Viṣvaksena, / the fortunate son of Vāyu, undertook to praise Hari.
3.8.14
Viṣvaksena said: / 'The Blessed One, Kṛṣṇa, is the giver of liberation and full of bliss, if always / there is supreme devotion that accomplishes direct perception;
3.8.15
and likewise, if there is guileless devotion toward the virtuous, / beginning with one’s own guru up to Brahmā, according to their eligibility;
3.8.16
and if there is love toward living beings such as tulasī, O bird, / then worldly transmigration will surely be destroyed; of this there is no doubt.'
3.8.17
Having thus praised, O great Lord, the fortunate Viṣvaksena / fell silent, O Garuḍa, with folded hands and bent neck: / "I am certainly lower than Mitra; no consideration is needed on this matter."
3.8.17.p1
Thus ends the eighth chapter [...] in the glorious Garuḍa Mahāpurāṇa.
