52.1
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Thus was this dark creation of Brahmā, whose birth is from the unmanifest. / I shall declare the creation of Rudra; hear that from me as I speak.
52.2
Likewise his eight sons, and their wives and their sons. / At the beginning of the kalpa, as the lord was meditating upon a son equal to himself,
52.3
there appeared on his lap a boy of blue and red hue. / He wept with a loud voice and ran about, O best of the twice-born.
52.4
"Why do you weep?" said Brahmā to the weeping boy. / He then replied to that lord of the universe: "Give me a name!"
52.5
"You are Rudra, O lord, by name; do not weep, summon fortitude!" / Addressed thus, he then wept seven times.
52.6
Then the lord gave him seven other names, / and their abodes, wives, and sons for these eight, O twice-born:
52.7
Bhava, Śarva, likewise Īśāna, and Paśupati, / Bhīma, Ugra, and Mahādeva, the grandfather addressed the lord.
52.8
He then made these names, and appointed their abodes: / the sun, water, the earth, fire, wind, and space,
52.9
the consecrated brahmin, and the moon: these are the bodies in due order. / Suvarcalā, likewise Umā, Vikeśī, and another, Svadhā,
52.10
Svāhā, the directions, likewise Dīkṣā, and Rohiṇī, in due order, / belong to the sun and the rest, O best of the twice-born, along with the names beginning with Rudra.
52.11
Śanaiścara, Śukra, Lohitāṅga, Manojava, / Skanda, Sarga, Santāna, and Budha were their sons in regular order.
52.12
Rudrā, of this nature, obtained Satī as his wife; / and because of Dakṣa’s anger, that Satī abandoned her own body.
52.13
She became the daughter of Himavat by Menā, O best of brahmins; / and her brother was Maināka, the peerless friend of the ocean.
52.14
Lord Bhava married her once again, who was devoted to no other. / Khyāti bore to Bhṛgu the two gods Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ,
52.15
and Śrī, who is the wife of Nārāyaṇa, the God of gods. / Āyati and Niyati were the two daughters of the great-souled Meru;
52.16
they became the wives of Dhātṛ and Vidhātṛ. From those two were born two sons, / Prāṇa and Mṛkaṇḍu, my renowned father.
52.17
From him I was born to Manasvinī; my son was Vedaśiras / born to Dhūmravatī. Learn from me also [the line] of Prāṇa:
52.18
Prāṇa had a son named Dyutimān; born to him was a son, / and to the two of them there were born many unaging sons and grandsons.
52.19
Sambhūti, the wife of Marīci, gave birth to Paurṇamāsa; / Virajas and Parvata were the two sons of that great-souled one.
52.20
I will tell you about their sons when reciting the lineages, O twice-born one. / Smṛti, the wife of Aṅgiras, gave birth to daughters:
52.21
Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Rākā, and Bhānumatī. / Likewise Anasūyā bore sinless sons to Atri:
52.22
Soma, Durvāsas, and the yogin Dattātreya. / In Prīti, wife of Pulastya, another son was given, named Datta;
52.23
in a previous birth he is remembered as Agastya in the Svāyambhuva interval. / Kardama, Arvavīra, and Sahiṣṇu were the three sons
52.24
whom Kṣamā, wife of the Prajāpati Pulaha, brought forth. / Sannati, wife of Kratu, gave birth to the Bālakhilyas,
52.25
who were sixty thousand sages whose seed was drawn upward. / To Ūrjā by Vasiṣṭha seven sons were indeed born:
52.26
Rajogātra, Ūrdhvabāhu, Sabala, and Anagha, / Sutapas, and Śukla; all these are remembered as the seven sages.
52.27
From that proud Fire, the eldest son of Brahmā, / Svāhā obtained three sons of noble power, O twice-born one:
52.28
Pāvaka, Pavamāna, and Śuci who drinks water. / In their progeny are forty-five others;
52.29
and these, along with the father and the three sons, are often mentioned; / thus are the forty-nine invincible ones proclaimed.
52.30
The ancestors created by Brahmā, who were explained by me to you— / the Agniṣvāttas and the Barhiṣads, those without fires and those with fires—
52.31
Svadhā bore to them two daughters, Menā and Dhāriṇī. / Both of them were teachers of brahman and both were yoginīs, O twice-born one,
52.32
endowed with the highest knowledge and rich in all virtues. / Thus has the offspring of Dakṣa’s daughters been narrated; / remembering it constantly with faith, one becomes blessed with progeny.
52.32.p1
Thus ends the fifty-second chapter, titled ‘Description of the Creation by Rudra,’ in the glorious Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa.
