53.1

Krauṣṭuki said: / This Svāyambhuva manvantara which has been recounted by you— / that, O Lord, I wish to hear in full; let it be spoken:

53.2

the duration of the manvantara, the gods, the divine sages, / who the rulers of the earth were, O Lord, and who the king of the gods was.

53.3

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Seventy-one [catur-yugas] with a remainder are enumerated as a manvantara. / Hear from me the manvantara by human calculation:

53.4

Thirty crores are counted, and twenty thousand, / and sixty-seven other millions by count—

53.5

such is the measure of a manvantara, without the additional fraction. / By divine reckoning, it is remembered as eight hundred and fifty-two

53.6

thousand years, with more besides. / First was Svāyambhuva Manu, and then Svārociṣa Manu,

53.7

Uttama, Tāmasa, Raivata, and Cākṣuṣa: / these six Manus have passed, and now is Vaivasvata.

53.8

Sāvarṇi, the five [other Sāvarṇis], Raucya, and Bhautya are the future ones. / The detailed account of these in the assumption of manvantaras,

53.9

the gods, the sages, the lords of Yakṣas, and the ancestors, / their origin and summary, O brahmin—let their progeny be heard,

53.10

and what realm belonged to them, the noble sons of that [Manu]. / There were ten sons equal to himself born to Svāyambhuva Manu,

53.11

by whom this entire earth, with its seven continents and mountains, / with its oceans and mines, was settled division by division.

53.12

With its oceans and mines, realm by realm, in the Tretā age, / by those sons of Priyavrata and grandsons of Svāyambhuva [it was settled].

53.13

From the heroic Priyavrata, a daughter was born to Prajāvatī; / that daughter was the highly fortunate [wife] of the Prajāpati Kardama.

53.14

Two daughters and ten sons [she had]; both daughters were Samrāṭ and Kukṣi; / and their ten heroic brothers were equal to Prajāpatis:

53.15

Āgnīdhra, Medhātithi, and another named Vapuṣmat, / Jyotiṣmat, Dyutimān, Bhavya, and Savana—these seven alone.

53.16

Priyavrata consecrated those seven kings over the seven / continents in accordance with righteousness; learn also the continents from me:

53.17

The father made Āgnīdhra king over Jambudvīpa; / Medhātithi was made by him the sovereign of Plakṣadvīpa;

53.18

he made Vapuṣmat ruler of Śālmali, Jyotiṣmat of that called Kuśa, / Dyutimān of Krauñcadvīpa, Bhavya the lord of that called Śāka,

53.19

and his son Savana he made lord of Puṣkara. / Mahāvīta and Dhātaki were the two sons of the lord of Puṣkara;

53.20

dividing the realm into two parts, he settled them in Puṣkara. / Bhavya had seven sons; learn them by name from me:

53.21

Jalada, Kumāra, Sukumāra, Manīvaka, / Kuśottara, then Medhāvin, and the seventh was Mahādruma.

53.22

He made the realms in Śākadvīpa named after them. / Dyutimān likewise had seven sons; learn of them from me:

53.23

Kuśala, Manuga, Uṣṇa, Prākara, Arthakāraka, / Muni, and Dundubhi is proclaimed as the seventh.

53.24

In Krauñcadvīpa there were likewise [realms] bearing their names; / in Kuśadvīpa indeed they were marked with the names of the sons of Jyotiṣmat.

53.25

There too are seven realms; hear their names from me: / Udbhida and Vaiṣṇava, and likewise Suratha and Lambana,

53.26

Dhṛtimat and Prākara, and also Kāpila as the seventh. / And Vapuṣmat, the lord of Śālmala, had seven sons:

53.27

Śveta and Harita, and Jīmūta and Rohita, / Vaidyuta and Mānasa, and Ketumat as the seventh.

53.28

Just so, the seven [realms] of Śālmala bore their identical names. / Medhātithi, the lord of Plakṣadvīpa, had seven sons,

53.29

by whose names Plakṣadvīpa is divided into seven realms. / First is the realm Śākabhava, then Śiśira, which brings happiness,

53.30

and Ānanda, Śiva, Kṣemaka, and Dhruva. / In the five [dvīpas] beginning with Plakṣadvīpa and ending with Śākadvīpa,

53.31

the dharma arising from the division of varṇas and āśramas should be known [to exist], / eternal, natural, and enhanced by the rule of non-violence;

53.32

in these five realms it is remembered as common to all. / Formerly, O twice-born, the father gave Jambudvīpa to Āgnīdhra.

53.33

He had nine sons equal to Prajāpatis. / The eldest was known as Nābhi; Kiṃpuruṣa was younger than he.

53.34

Harivarṣa was the third, and Ilāvṛta was the fourth; / the fifth son was Vaśya, and the sixth is called Hiraṇya.

53.35

Kuru was the seventh of them, Bhadrāśva is remembered as the eighth, / and the ninth was Ketumāla; by their names the realms were established.

53.36

In those [realms] beginning with Kiṃpuruṣa, with the exception of the one named Hima, / perfection occurs by nature, mostly consisting of happiness, without effort.

53.37

There is no adversity in them, nor fear of old age and death; / there was no dharma or adharma in them, nor higher, lower, and middle [conditions].

53.38

There is no state of the four yugas, nor seasonal changes or seasons. / To Āgnīdhra's son Nābhi, O twice-born, a son named Ṛṣabha was born.

53.39

From Ṛṣabha was born Bharata, a hero, the best among a hundred sons. / Having consecrated his son, Ṛṣabha undertook great renunciation.

53.40

Taking refuge in the hermitage of Pulaha, the illustrious one practiced austerities. / The father gave the southern realm named Hima to Bharata;

53.41

therefore, after the name of that great soul, it is called Bhāratavarṣa. / Bharata also had a righteous son named Sumati.

53.42

Having committed the kingdom to him, Bharata also went to the forest. / By the sons and grandsons of these [rulers], the earth with its seven continents

53.43

was enjoyed by the sons of Priyavrata during the Svāyambhuva manvantara. / This creation of Svāyambhuva has been related to you, O best of the twice-born,

53.44

duly [occurring] in the previous manvantara. What else shall I tell you?

53.44.p1

Thus ends the fifty-third chapter, named 'Account of the Manvantara', in the glorious Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa.

53.44.p2

Chapter fifty-four.
