64.1

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Thus freed from illness, the maiden, filled with joy, / said this to Svarocis: 'Listen to my words, lord!

64.2

I am the daughter of Mandāra the vidyādhara, renowned by the name Vibhāvarī. / O benefactor, I offer myself [to you]; accept me!

64.3

And I will give you a lore [by which] the cries of all beings / will become clear to you; be inclined to show favor!'

64.4

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / When Svarocis, who knew dharma, replied, 'So be it,' / the second maiden then spoke these words:

64.5

'My father, Pāra by name, was a celibate from his youth, / a most fortunate brahmin seer who had crossed over the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.

64.6

Long ago, in the spring charming with the calls of male cuckoos, / the renowned apsaras Puñjikāstanā came into his presence.

64.7

That eminent sage was then brought under the sway of desire, / and from his union with her, I was born here on this great mountain.

64.8

And my mother abandoned me and departed into this uninhabited forest, / leaving a solitary infant on the surface of the earth teeming with serpents and wild beasts.

64.9

Then, nourished day after day by the crescent digits of the moon / growing at the close of day, I grew up, O best of men.

64.10

Then this name Kalāvatī was given to me by my high-souled father, / the gandharva, who took me in, O fair-faced one.

64.11

When asked, that high-souled one did not give me away then, / and while asleep, my father was killed by the enemy of the gods, Alin.

64.12

Then, from utter despair, I was ready to destroy myself, / but I was restrained by the wife of Śambhu, the truthful Satī, true to her promise:

64.13

"Do not grieve, fair-browed one! Your husband will be a most fortunate man / named Svarocis, and his son will become a Manu.

64.14

And all the treasures will deferentially obey your command, / and they will grant you wealth according to your desire, O auspicious one.

64.15

Receive from me, my child, the lore by whose power [this occurs]; / this lore is named Padminī, revered by Mahāpadma."

64.16

Thus Dakṣa's daughter, Satī, devoted to truth, spoke to me. / You are indeed Svarocis; that goddess will not speak falsely.

64.17

Therefore, to you who gave me life, I offer today / that lore and my own body; be pleased to look favorably upon me and accept!'

64.18

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / He said to the maiden Kalāvatī, 'So be it,' / approved by the affectionate glance of Vibhāvarī and Kalāvatī.

64.19

And then he, possessing the splendour of an immortal, took the hands of both of them, / while the musical instruments of the gods sounded and the apsarases danced.

64.19.p1

Thus ends the sixty-fourth chapter in the Svārociṣa Manvantara in the glorious Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa.

64.19.p2
