73.1
Mārkaṇḍeya said: / In this third manvantara, that of the progenitor Auttama, / learn from me as I speak of the gods, Indra, the ṛṣis, and the kings.
73.2
The gods were the Svadhāmans, acting according to their names; / and the second group of the thirty [gods] was called the Satyas.
73.3
In the third group, O best of sages, the gods were called the Śivas; / they are known to be auspicious in their very nature, destroying sins.
73.4
And the group of gods named Pratardana, O best of sages, / is recounted as the fourth in the period of Manu Auttama.
73.5
In the fifth group also the gods were the Vaśavartins, O twice-born one; / they were all indeed true to their names, O great sage.
73.6
These five groups of gods are remembered as the enjoyers of the sacrifice; / in this excellent manvantara, all the groups consisted of twelve.
73.7
Their Indra, exalted in fortune, would be the preceptor in the three worlds, / having performed a hundred sacrifices, Suśānti by name.
73.8
Even today, for the destruction of calamities, an ancient verse adorned with the syllables of his name / is sung by mortals upon the earth:
73.9
“Suśānti, king of the gods, lovely, grants deep peace, / accompanied by the gods such as the Śivas and Satyas, and likewise the Vaśavartins.”
73.10
Aja, Para, Śuci, Divya, endowed with great strength and prowess— / the sons of that Manu were renowned, equal to the gods.
73.11
The earth was protected by kings born of his lineage / for the entire duration of the manvantara of that Manu of superior splendor.
73.12
Seventy-one sets of four yugas, with something more, / are reckoned, designated as Kṛta, Tretā, and the like, which were described by me in each yuga.
73.13
By their own splendor, born of the ascetic power of the most excellent great soul, / his seven sons became the Seven Sages in that manvantara.
73.14
This third manvantara has been told to you by me; / now the period of the fourth Manu, Tāmasa, is declared.
73.15
Listen to me as I tell, O brahmin, of the birth of that Manu, / whose birth was from an animal womb, yet whose fame illuminated the world.
73.16
The deeds of all the Manus are beyond the senses; / likewise their birth and the power of those great souls is to be understood.
