78.1

Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then the gods and divine seers who had assembled praised the Sun / with speech of the entire three worlds who was about to be pared down.

78.2

The gods said:
"Salutations to you whose nature is the Ṛgveda! Salutations to you whose nature is the Sāmaveda! / Salutations to you whose form is the nature of the Yajurveda, who possess the abode of the Sāman chants!

78.3

Salutations to you who are the sole abode of knowledge, by whom darkness is dispelled, / whose nature is pure light, who are completely purified, of spotless self!

78.4

To the foremost, to the most excellent, to the transcendent Supreme Self, / salutations to you whose nature pervades the entire universe, whose form is the self!

78.5

This delightful, best of hymns should be heard with faith by men; / having become a disciple, established in meditation, and having given what should be given to the guru,

78.6

it should not be heard by those who are empty-minded, so that this may be fruitful— / to [you], the cause of all things, the ultimate state of those whose minds possess knowledge!

78.7

Salutations to you whose nature is the sun, whose nature is the essence of light! / Salutations to you, the maker of light, and salutations to the maker of the day!

78.8

And salutations to the cause of the night, the maker of twilight and moonlight! / You are all this universe, O Lord; as you revolve,

78.9

the entire cosmic egg, with everything moving and unmoving, revolves, set in motion. / Touched by your rays, all this becomes pure.

78.10

Purity of water and other [elements] is produced by the touch of your rays; / dharma such as oblations and gifts does not lead to benefit

78.11

as long as this world is not united with your rays. / All these verses are indeed your Ṛg hymns, and these other ones are the Yajus texts;

78.12

and all the Sāman chants issue forth from your body. / You consist of the Ṛgveda, O Lord of the universe! You alone consist of the Yajurveda;

78.13

and because you consist of the Sāmaveda, therefore, O Lord, you consist of the three Vedas. / You alone are the form of brahman, both the higher and the lower;

78.14

likewise, you abide as the formed and the formless, the subtle and the gross form; / you consist of moments, kāṣṭhās, and other [divisions], your form is time, consisting of destruction. / Be pleased, according to your will, to pacify your own form and brilliance!"

78.15

Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Being thus praised by the gods and divine seers, / that imperishable mass of splendours then shed his own brilliance.

78.16

That brilliance of his which consisted of the Ṛgveda: by that the earth will be formed; / the sky by that which consisted of the Yajurveda; and heaven by that of the Sun which consisted of the Sāmaveda.

78.17

The fifteen parts of brilliance that were pared away by Tvaṣṭṛ— / by that very great-souled Tvaṣṭṛ, the trident of Śarva was fashioned;

78.18

the discus of Viṣṇu, and the very terrible spikes of the Vasus, / and likewise the spear of Pāvaka, and the palanquin of the Bestower of Wealth;

78.19

and whatever fierce weapons belong to the other enemies of the asuras, / and of the yakṣas and vidyādharas—all those the maker of the universe fashioned.

78.20

And after that, the all-pervading Lord bears the sixteenth part; / that brilliance of his was pared away in fifteen parts by Viśvakarman.

78.21

Then, assuming the form of a stallion, the Sun went to the Northern Kurus, / and there saw Saṃjñā bearing the form of a mare.

78.22

And seeing him coming, out of apprehension of another male, / she went toward him, intent on protecting her rear.

78.23

And then, as the two joined there, their nostrils met; / and Nāsatya and Dasra, two sons, issued from the mare's mouth.

78.24

And at the end of the semen, Revanta was born, armed with a sword and shield, / wearing armour, mounted on a horse, and provided with arrows and a quiver.

78.25

Then the Sun revealed his matchless true form; / and seeing his true form, she felt joy.

78.26

And bringing this beloved wife Saṃjñā, who had resumed her own form, / to his own abode, the Sun dispersed the darkness.

78.27

Then her first son became Vaivasvata Manu. / And the second son, Yama, became of righteous judgment because of a curse.

78.28

"Worms will take flesh from his foot and fall to the surface of the earth"— / thus his father himself set an end to his curse.

78.29

And because he possessed righteous judgment and was impartial toward friend as well as foe, / the dispeller of darkness appointed him to that office in the southern quarter.

78.30

And the Yamunā was born as a river flowing within Mount Kalinda. / The two Aśvins were made the physicians of the gods by their magnanimous father.

78.31

Revanta too was appointed to the lordship over the Guhyakas. / Now hear from me the appointment of the children of Chāyā-Saṃjñā.

78.32

The eldest son of Chāyā-Saṃjñā was equal to his elder brother Manu; / therefore that son of the Sun received the name Sāvarṇi.

78.33

He too will become a Manu when Bali is Indra. / And Śanaiścara was appointed by his father to a place among the planets.

78.34

Their third [child], a daughter named Tapatī, / obtained from King Saṃvaraṇa a son, Kuru, a lord of men.

78.35

I shall relate to you the seventh period of that Vaivasvata Manu: / his sons the kings, the ṛṣis, the gods, and the sovereign of the gods.

78.35.p1

Thus ends the seventy-eighth chapter, entitled "The Origin of Vaivasvata," in the Sāvarṇika Manvantara of the glorious Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa.
