The seer said: / When the great lord of asuras was slain there by the Goddess, / the gods headed by Indra, with Agni at their fore, their hope kindled, their lotus-faces beaming / because their desire was attained, praised that Kātyāyanī:

91.2

The gods said: / “O Goddess who removes the distress of the surrendered, be pleased! / Be pleased, O mother of the entire universe! / Be pleased, O sovereign of the universe, protect the universe! / You, O Goddess, are the ruler of the moving and unmoving.

91.3

You alone are the foundation of the world, / for you abide in the form of the earth; / abiding in the form of the waters, you nourish this entire [universe], / O you of insurmountable valor!

91.4

You are the Vaiṣṇava power, of infinite prowess; / you are the seed of the universe, the supreme māyā; / by you, O Goddess, this whole world is deluded, / and you indeed, when pleased, are the cause of liberation on earth.

91.5

All branches of knowledge, O Goddess, are your distinctions; / all women in the worlds are your parts. / By you alone, as Mother, is this universe filled; / what praise can there be of you, since you are beyond words of praise?

91.6

When you, the Goddess, who have become all beings, bestow heaven and liberation, / what highest words could suffice for your praise?

91.7

O you who dwell in the form of intellect in the hearts of all people, / bestower of heaven and liberation, O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.8

In the form of kalās, kāṣṭhās, and other measures of time, you bring about change; / O power capable of the dissolution of the universe, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.9

O you who are the auspiciousness of all that is auspicious, O auspicious one, accomplisher of all goals, / refuge, three-eyed one, Gauri, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.10

O power of creation, preservation, and destruction, eternal one, / abode of the qualities, full of qualities, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.11

O you who are devoted to the rescue of the helpless and afflicted who seek refuge in you, / remover of the suffering of everyone, O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.12

O you who sit in an aerial chariot drawn by swans, bearing the form of Brahmāṇī, / sprinkling water with kuśa grass, O Goddess Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.13

Bearing a trident, the moon, and a serpent, riding a great bull, / in the form of Māheśvarī, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.14

Surrounded by peacocks and roosters, bearing a great spear, sinless one, / present in the form of Kaumārī, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.15

Holding the supreme weapons—conch, discus, mace, and the Śārṅga bow— / be gracious, in the form of Vaiṣṇavī, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.16

Holding a terrible, great discus, who lifted up the earth with your tusk, / having the form of a boar, auspicious one, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.17

In the fierce form of the man-lion, striving to slay the daityas, / engaged in the protection of the three worlds, O Nārāyaṇī, salutations to you!

91.18

O diadem-wearer, wielder of the great vajra, radiant with a thousand eyes, / slayer of the life of Vṛtra, O Aindrī, O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.19

In the form of Śivadūtī, slayer of the mighty army of the Daityas, / of dreadful form, of great roar, O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.20

With a face fearsome with fangs, adorned with a garland of heads, / O Cāmuṇḍā, crusher of Muṇḍa, O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.21

O Lakṣmī, Modesty, Great Knowledge, Faith, Nourishment, Svadhā, Constant One, / Great Night, Great Illusion, O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.22

O Intellect, Sarasvatī, Excellent One, Prosperity, Bābhravī, Dark One, / Restrained One, O Supreme Goddess, be pleased; O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.23

Having hands and feet everywhere, having eyes, heads, and faces everywhere, / having ears and noses everywhere, O Nārāyaṇī, praise be to you!

91.24

O embodiment of all, ruler of all, endowed with all powers, / protect us from fears, O goddess; O Goddess Durgā, praise be to you!

91.25

May this gentle face of yours, adorned with three eyes, / protect us from all terrors; O Kātyāyanī, praise be to you!

91.26

Terrible with flames, exceedingly fierce, destroying all the Asuras, / may your trident protect us from fear; O Bhadrakālī, praise be to you!

91.27

Which destroys the energy of the Daityas, filling the world with its sound— / may that bell protect us from evils, O goddess, as if [protecting] our children!

91.28

Smeared with the mire of the blood and fat of Asuras, flashing in your hand— / may your sword be for our welfare; O Caṇḍikā, we bow to you!

91.29

Pleased, you destroy all diseases, / but angered, [you destroy] all desired wishes. / No misfortune befalls people who have taken refuge in you; / indeed, those who have taken refuge in you become a refuge [for others].

91.30

This slaughter of the great asuras, the enemies of dharma, / which was performed by you today, O Devi, / multiplying your form into many shapes— / O Ambikā, what other woman could accomplish that?

91.31

In the sciences, in the scriptures which are lamps of discernment, / and in the primordial sayings, who other than you / causes this entire universe to wander excessively / in the pit of possessiveness, an immense darkness?

91.32

Where rakṣasas and serpents of fierce poison are, / where enemies and bands of robbers are, / where forest fire is, and likewise in the midst of the sea, / abiding there, you protect the universe.

91.33

O ruler of the universe, you protect the universe; / being the soul of the universe, you sustain the universe. / You are praised by the lord of the universe; those who bow to you in devotion / become the support of the universe.

91.34

O Devi, be gracious! Protect us continually from fear of enemies, / just as [you have done] immediately now through the slaying of the asuras. / Quickly pacify the sins of all the worlds, / and the great calamities born of the fruition of omens!

91.35

Be gracious to those who bow before you, O Devi, who remove the distress of the universe! / O you who are to be praised by the dwellers of the three worlds, be the granter of boons to the worlds!

91.36

The Devi said: / "I am the granter of boons, O host of gods; choose the boon / that you desire in your mind; I shall grant it for the welfare of the worlds."

91.37

The gods said: / "The pacification of all distress of the three worlds, O ruler of all, / and likewise the destruction of our enemies, / is to be accomplished by you."

91.38

The Devi said: / "When the Vaivasvata manvantara arrives in the twenty-eighth yuga, / two other great asuras, Śumbha and Niśumbha, will arise.

91.39

Born in the house of the cowherd Nanda, produced from the womb of Yaśodā, / dwelling on the Vindhya mountain, I shall then destroy the two of them.

91.40

Having descended again upon the surface of the earth / in a most terrible form, I shall destroy the Vaipracitta dānavas.

91.41

And as I devour those fierce Vaipracitta dānavas, / my teeth will become red like pomegranate flowers.

91.42

Then the deities in heaven and humans in the mortal world, / praising me, will constantly speak of me as Raktadantikā.

91.43

And again, during a drought lasting a hundred years, when there is no water, / praised by sages upon the earth, I will be born, not from a womb.

91.44

Because I shall then gaze upon the sages with a hundred eyes, / mortals will thereafter celebrate me as Śatākṣī.

91.45

Then, O gods, I shall sustain the entire world / with life-supporting vegetables produced from my own body until the rain comes.

91.46

Then I shall attain renown on earth as Śākambharī. / And right there I will slay the great asura named Durgama; / my name will become renowned as the goddess Durgā.

91.47

And when, assuming a terrifying form on the Himālayas, / I shall devour rakṣasas for the protection of the sages,

91.48

then all the sages, bowing their bodies, will praise me; / my name will become renowned as the goddess Bhīmā.

91.49

When the [asura] named Aruṇa causes great distress in the three worlds, / then I, assuming a bee-like form of countless six-footed insects,

91.50

shall kill the great asura for the benefit of the three worlds; / and then the worlds will praise me everywhere as Bhrāmarī.

91.51

In this manner, whenever distress arising from the dānavas occurs, / descending at that very time, I shall bring about the destruction of enemies."
