Matsya Purana 228: adhyāyaḥ 228

228.1

manumatsyasaṃvāde trividhamahotpāteṣu śāntividhānam .

Manu said:—“Lord! pray tell me how peace-offerings (S’ânti) are made to avert the ominous signs seen in the celestial, intermediate and terrestrial regions—1 and also one who interferes with the authority of the sovereign should be killed, after being disfigured The goldsmith who adulterates the articles of manufacture with mischief should be cut down to pieces by weapons and one who taking things from a trader does not pay the price or sells privately those things should be fined Madhyama Sâhasa A man found selling things by speaking a lie should also be similarly dealt with.—184-187

divyāntarikṣabhaumeṣu yā śāntirabhidhīyate.
tāmahaṃ śrotumicchāmi mahotpāteṣu keśava! .. 228.1 ..

matsya uvāca.
athātaḥ sampravakṣyāmi trividhāmadbhutādiṣu .
viśeṣeṇatu bhaumeṣu śāntiḥ kāryya tathā bhavet .. 228.2 ..

abhayā cāntarikṣeṣu saumyā divyeṣu pārthiva!.
vijigīṣuḥ paraṃ rājan! bhūtikāmastu yo bhavet .. 228.3 ..

vijigīṣuḥ parānevamabhiyuktastathā paraiḥ.
tatābhicāraśaṅkāyāṃ śatrūṇāmabhināśane .. 228.4 ..

228.6

bhaye mahati saṃprāpte abhayā śāntiriṣyate.
rājayakṣmābhi bhūtasya kṣatakṣīṇasya cāpyatha.. 228.5 ..

228.7

saumyā praśasyate śāntiryajñakāmasya cāpyatha.
bhūkampe ca samutpanne prāpte cānnakṣaye tathā .. 228.6 ..

ativṛṣṭyāmanāvṛṣṭyāṃ śalabhānāṃ bhayeṣu ca.
pramatteṣu ca coreṣu vaiṣṇavī śāntiriṣyate .. 228.7 ..

paśūnāṃ māraṇe prāpte narāṇāmapi dāruṇe.
bhūteṣu dṛśyamāneṣu raudrī śāntistatheṣyate .. 228.8 ..

228.10

vedanāśe samutpanne jane jāte ca nāstike.
apūjyapūjane jāte brāhmī śāntistatheṣyate .. 228.9 ..

228.11

bhaviṣyatyabhiṣeke ca paracakrabhaye'pi ca.
svarāṣṭrabhede'rivadhe raudrī śāntiḥ praśasyate .. 228.10 ..

228.12

tryahātirikte pavane bhakṣye sarvavigarhite.
vaikṛte vātaje vyādhau vāyavī śāntiriṣyate .. 228.11 ..

anāvṛṣṭibhaye jāte prāpte vikṛtivarṣaṇe.
jalāśayavikāreṣu vāruṇī śāntiriṣyate .. 228.12 ..

228.14

abhiśāpabhaye prāpte bhārgavī ca tathaiva ca.
jāte prasavavaikṛtye prājāpatyā mahābhuja!.. 228.13 ..

228.15

upaskarāṇāṃ vaikṛtye tvāṣṭrī pārthivanandana!.
bālānāṃ śāntikāmasya kaumārī ca tathā nṛpa! .. 228.14 ..

228.16

kuryācchāntimathāgneyīṃ samprāpte vahnivaikṛte.
ājñābhaṅge tu sañjāte tathā bhṛtyādi saṅkṣaye .. 228.15 ..

228.17

aśvānāṃ śāntikāmasya tadvikāre samutthite.
aśvānāṃ kāmayānasya gāndharvī śāntiriṣyate .. 228.16 ..

228.18

gajānāṃ śāntikāmasya tadvikāre samutthite.
gajānāṃ kāmayānasya śāntirāṅgirasī bhavet .. 228.17 ..

228.19

piśācādi-bhaye jāte śāntirvai nairṛtī smṛtā.
apamṛtyubhaye jāte duḥkhapne ca tathā sthite .. 228.18 ..

228.20

yāmyāntu kārayecchāntiṃ prāpte tu narake tathā.
dhananāśe samutpanne kauverī śāntiriṣyate .. 228.19 ..

228.21

vṛkṣāṇāñca tathārthānāṃ vaikṛte samupasthite.
bhūtikāmastathā śāntiṃ pārthivīṃ pratiyojayet .. 228.20 ..

228.22

prathame dinayāme ca rātrau vā manujottama!.
haste svātau ca citrāyāmāditye cāśvine tathā .. 228.21 ..

If he be a Kṣattriya, he would be fined Madhyama Sâhasa, if a Vaiṣya he would be fined Prathama Sâhasa and if a Sûdra he would be fined half of it One who defiles a Brâhmaṇa by making him eat any thing unworthy should also be fined 1060 Panas, if he does so with a Kṣattriya the fine should be 405 Panas, if he does so with a Vaiśya the Âgneyī Śānti should be performed when any untoward things happen before daybreak or during the night time in the first Yāma when Hasta, Svâti, Chitrâ or Aśvinī asterisms are seen with the Sun in the north-western corner, or when in the second Yāma of day or night Pusyâ, Viśâkhâ, and Bharanī star go with the Sun and ominous signs are seen in the south eastern corner.—21-23

228.23

aryamṇi saumya! jāteṣu vāyavyāṃ tvadbhuteṣu ca.
dvitīye dinayāme tu rātrau ca ravinandana! .. 228.22 ..

228.24

puṣpāgre ye viśākhāsu pitryāsu bharaṇīṣu ca.
utpāteṣu tathā bhāgye āgneyīṃ teṣu kārayet .. 228.23 ..

228.25

tṛtīye dinayāme ca rātrau ca ravinandana!.
rohiṇyāṃ vaiṣṇave brāhme vāsave vaiśvadevate .. 228.24 ..

Aindrī Śānti should be performed when any ills occur in the third Yama of night or day when Rohinī or Jyeṣṭhā star is seen with the Sun and ominous sign occurs in the south east corner—24 25

228.26

jyeṣṭhāyāñca tathā maitre ye bhavantyadbhutāḥ kvacit.
aindrī teṣu prayoktavyā śāntī ravikulodvaha! .. 228.25 ..

228.27

caturthe dinayāme rātrau vā ravinandana!.
sārpe pauṣṇe tathārdrāyāmahirbudhnye ca dāruṇe .. 228.26 ..

Mahî Śānti should be performed when any ills happen in the fourth Yāma night or day when Aśleṣâ, Ardrâ, Pusyâ or Mulâ star is seen with the Sun and ominous signs appear in the west.—26-27

228.28

mūle varuṇadaitye ye bhavantyadbhutāstathā.
vāruṇī teṣu karttavyā mahāśāntirmahīkṣitā .. 228.27 ..

228.29

mitramaṇḍalavelāsu ye bhavantyadbhutāḥ kvacit.
tatra śāntidvayaṃ kāryaṃ nimitteṣu ca nānyathā.
nirnimittakṛtā śāntirnimittenopayujyate .. 228.28 ..

When any ills occur at noon during day two propitiatory rites should be performed Rites performed when there are no disturbances beget no consequence—28

228.30

bāṇaprahārā na bhavanti yadvadrājannṛṇāṃ sannahanairyutānām.
daivopaghātā na bhavanti tadvaddharmātmanāṃ śāntiparāyaṇānām .. 228.29 ..
