45.1

Sūta said: / Gāndhārī and Mādrī were the two wives of Vṛṣṇi. / Gāndhārī gave birth to Sumitra, the delight of his friends.

45.2

Mādrī [bore] a son, Yudhājit, and then Devamīḍhuṣa, / Anamitra, Śibi, and Kṛtalakṣaṇa as the fifth.

45.3

Anamitra's son was Nighna, and Nighna had two sons: / both Prasena of great valor and Śaktisena.

45.4

Prasena possessed the Syamantaka, an unsurpassed gem-jewel; / that jewel indeed became the king of all jewels on the earth.

45.5

Desiring it in his heart, Govinda asked for that jewel many times; / yet he did not obtain it, nor did he seize it though he was capable.

45.6

Once, adorned with it, Prasena went hunting; / he heard a noise in a cave filled with wild creatures.

45.7

Then, having entered the cave, Prasena saw a bear; / the bear [saw] Prasena, and Prasenajit [saw] the bear.

45.8

Having slain Prasena, the bear took that jewel; / he was slain by him unseen, having gone inside the cave at that time.

45.9

Learning that Prasena was slain, Govinda was suspected: / 'Prasena was clearly slain by Govinda for the sake of the jewel.'

45.10

Prasena had gone to the forest adorned with the gem-jewel; / having seen him slain by that [bear], Govinda indeed replied: / 'I shall slay this evildoer who has become an enemy among the Vṛṣṇis.'

45.11

Then, after a long time, having gone out to hunt again, / Govinda by chance came to the vicinity of the cave.

45.12

Seeing him, the mighty king of the bears made a loud roar; / hearing the sound, Govinda entered with sword in hand / and saw that mighty king of the bears, Jāmbavat.

45.13

Then Hṛṣīkeśa swiftly seized that lord of the bears, / Jāmbavat, his eyes blood-red with anger.

45.14

Then the bear praised the Lord with his Vaiṣṇava deeds; / pleased by that, the Blessed One gratified him with a boon.

45.15

Jāmbavat said: / 'O Lord, I desire death at your hands by a blow of the discus, / and may this auspicious maiden of mine obtain you as her husband, / along with this jewel which I obtained after killing Prasena, O Lord.'

45.16

Then the Lord, having slain that Jāmbavat with his discus, / having accomplished his task, the mighty-armed one brought back the jewel along with the maiden.

45.17

He gave it to Satrājit in the assembly of all the Sātvatas; / Janārdana had been tormented by that false accusation.

45.18

Then all those Yādavas spoke to Vāsudeva: / 'It was indeed our belief that Prasena was killed by you.'

45.19

The daughter of the Kaikeya king was [one of] ten auspicious wives of Satrājit; / born to them were his one hundred renowned sons, / illustrious and of great valor, with Bhaṅgakāra as the eldest.

45.20

Then, from that eldest, Bhaṅgakāra, Vratavatī / gave birth to three delicate, lotus-eyed [daughters]:

45.21

Satyabhāmā, foremost of women, Vratinī of firm vows, / and Padmāvatī; and he gave them to Kṛṣṇa.

45.22

From Anamitra, the youngest delighter of the Vṛṣṇis, Śini was born; / his son was Satyaka, and Sātyaki was his son.

45.23

The truthful Yuyudhāna, full of majesty, was the grandson of Śini; / Asaṅga was the son of Yuyudhāna, and Dyumni was his son.

45.24

Dyumni's son was Yugaṃdhara; thus the descendants of Śini are celebrated. / This lineage of Anamitra, born of the Vṛṣṇi race, has been explained.

45.25

To Anamitra, the hero Yudhājit was born on the earth, / and two other heroic sons: Vṛṣabha and Kṣatra.

45.26

Vṛṣabha took as his wife the daughter of the king of Kāśi; / and upon Jayantī, an auspicious son, Jayanta, was born.

45.27

Ever sacrificing, exceedingly heroic, learned in the sacred texts, fond of guests,
and giving generous gifts, Akrūra was born of him as one ever offering sacrifice.

45.28

And Akrūra obtained Ratnā, daughter of Śaibya;
[upon her] he begot eleven sons of great strength:

45.29

Upalambha, Sadālambha, Vṛkala, and Vīrya,
Savītara, Sadāpakṣa, Śatrughna, Vārimejaya,

45.30

Dharmabhṛt, Dharmavarmā, and Dhṛṣṭamāna as well;
and all of them became assistant priests, born of Ratnā.

45.31

From Akrūra upon Ugrasenā were born two sons who increased the lineage,
Devavān and Upadeva, resembling gods.

45.32

And then upon Aśvinī were born the sons Pṛthu and Vipṛthu,
Aśvatthāman, Subāhu, Supārśvaka, and Gaveṣaṇa,

45.33

Vṛṣṭinemi, Sudharman, and likewise Śaryāti,
Abhūmi, Varjabhūmi, Śramiṣṭha, and Śravaṇa.

45.34

Whoever knows this false accusation removed from Kṛṣṇa,
he shall never be cursed with a false accusation by anyone.
