98.1

Nandikeśvara said: / Now I shall speak of another fruit regarding the conclusion of the Saṃkrānti vow, / which is imperishable in the next world and grants the fruit of all desires.

98.2

At the solstice or the equinox, one should observe the Saṃkrānti vow. / On the preceding day, after cleaning one's teeth, one should eat only a single meal; / on the morning of the day of Saṃkrānti, bathing with sesame seeds is prescribed.

98.3

At the sun's ingress, one should make on the ground with sandalwood an eight-petalled / lotus with a pericarp, and invoke the Sun into it.

98.4

One should place Sūrya in the pericarp, Āditya in the east from there, / ‘Homage to the Hot-Rayed One’ in the south, and ‘Homage to the Mandala of the Ṛgveda’ [in the south-west]—

98.5

[saying,] 'Homage to Savitṛ' in the southwest, and Tapana in the west, / and placing Bhaga in the northwest, one should worship again and again.

98.6

One should always place Mārtaṇḍa in the north and Viṣṇu in the northeast; / then one should worship on the cleared ground with perfumes, garlands, fruits, and food offerings.

98.7

Having had a water pitcher, a golden vessel of ghee, / and a lotus fashioned according to one's means, one should present them to a twice-born man.

98.8

And one should offer the oblation to the god upon the ground with sandalwood water and flowers: / 'Homage to the All, to the Universal Form, to the Abode of the Universe, to the Self-born; / homage, O Infinite One! Homage to the Creator, the Lord of Ṛg, Sāman, and Yajus!'

98.9

A man should perform all this month after month according to this rite, / or, at the end of the year, he should perform the whole twelvefold rite.

98.10

At the end of the year, having gratified the fire and the best of the twice-born with ghee and milk-rice, / [he should offer] twelve pitchers together with cows, endowed with jewels and golden lotuses;

98.11

and one should give cows that yield milk and are gentle, adorned with golden horns and silver hooves— / eight or seven cows, with bronze milking-pails and garlands and garments, or even four if unable; / if afflicted with poverty, he should present a single tawny cow to an eminent brāhmaṇa.

98.12

And one should have a golden earth fashioned, along with Śeṣa, or else of silver or copper; / if unable, having fashioned an image made of flour, one should give it together with a golden sun. / A man should not practice deceit regarding his wealth here; doing so, he goes downward—there is no doubt of this.

98.13

As long as the earth along with the seven seas shall endure with the principal mountains headed by Mahendra, / for that long he is worshipped on the surface of heaven by all the hosts of Gandharvas, O Nārada.

98.14

Then, having exhausted that karma, he will become a ruler of the seven continents, endowed with good lineage and conduct, / at the beginning of creation, with an unimpaired body, together with his wife, his feet revered by a lineage of many sons.

98.15

He who recites or hears with devotion this entire holy rite of the sun's passage, / or even approves of it, is worshipped by the gods in the abode of the lord of immortals.
