look after legal affairs, skilled in sacred tradition and custom. / This regulation established by me, O best of the twice-born,
16.24.82
dhārayaṃtu mahātmāno diggajā iva medinīm ..
evaṃ prabhutvamāsthāya sthāne'smiñchivaśālini ..82..
let the great-souled men uphold, just as the quarter-elephants support the earth. / Thus exercising authority in this place blessed by Śiva,
16.24.83

niśamya somasya vaco vinītamiti te dvijāḥ .. 83 ..
practice the duties prescribed by the Vedas, smṛtis, and Purāṇas, O twice-born.” / Hearing this humble speech of Soma, those twice-born [deliberated];
16.24.84
uvāca kauśikasteṣu gotrāṇāṃ prathamo dvijaḥ ..
sādhūpadiṣṭamasmākaṃ dvijarājena sarvathā ..84..
Kauśika, the foremost twice-born among the clans, said to them: / “All that has been instructed to us by the king of the twice-born is excellent in every way.
16.24.85
sarvametatkariṣyāmaḥ kiṃtu kiṃcinniśāmaya ..
niyogataḥ pūjayatāṃ śivanirmālyasevinām .. .. 85 ..
We will do all this, yet listen to something: / for those who worship by mandatory assignment, partaking of the offerings dedicated to Śiva,
16.24.86
pātityaṃ jāyate'smākaṃ śrutismṛtivigarhitam ..
śrutismṛtī hi rudrasya yasmādājñādvayaṃ mahat .. 86 ..
there arises a fall from caste, condemned by the Vedas and the smṛtis. / For the Vedas and the smṛtis are the two great commands of Rudra.
16.24.87
kastadullaṃghayenmūḍhaḥ prāṇaiḥ kaṃṭhaga tairapi .. 87 ..
What fool would transgress that, even if his life-breaths were at his throat?
16.24.88
aṣṭamūrteḥ punarmūrttāvagnau devamukhe makhān ..
kurvāṇāḥ śrutimārgeṇa prīṇayāmo'khilaṃ jagat .. 88 ..
Moreover, offering sacrifices according to the Vedic path in the fire, the mouth of the gods, / which is a manifestation of the Eight-formed Lord, we satisfy the entire universe.
16.24.89
jagadbhagavato rūpaṃ vyaktameta tpuradviṣaḥ ..
mitho vibhinnamityetadabhinnaṃ punarīśvarāt .. 89 ..
This world is the manifest form of the Lord, the foe of Tripura; / though manifold among itself, it is nevertheless non-different from Īśvara.
16.24.90

An oblation properly cast into the fire reaches the sun; / from the sun rain is born, from rain food, and from that all creatures.
16.24.91

For us, who are devoted to the noble study of the Vedas, smṛtis, Purāṇas, and other texts, / and whose actions are entirely engaged in those respective duties for merit,
16.24.92

rudrajāpyairmahāyajñairyajānāścaivamīśvaram .. 92 ..
even the leisure for liṅga worship is scarce. / Worshipping Īśvara through the great sacrifices and the recitation of the Rudra prayers,
16.24.93

yattu te'bhimataṃ soma śrīsomeśvarapūjanam ..
tacca saṃpādayiṣyāmaḥ saviśeṣaṃ mahāmate .. 93 ..
we worship the liṅga and the Veda whenever there is an opportune moment and time. / As for what you desire, O Soma, namely the worship of the glorious Someśvara,
16.24.94
yena tvadīpsitaṃ sidhyettamupāyaṃ niśāmaya ..
gaurīśaṃkarasaṃvādaṃ śrutvā bhagavato mukhāt .. 94 ..
that we shall accomplish with special care, O noble-minded one. / Listen to the means by which what you desire may be achieved:
16.24.95
nāradaḥ prāha naḥ pūrvaṃ kathayāmastameva te ..
brahmadevadviṣaḥ pūrvaṃ śataśo daityadānavāḥ ..
tapobhirugrairvividhaiḥ śaṃkaraṃ pratipedire .. 95 ..
having heard the dialogue between Gaurī and Śaṃkara from the mouth of the Lord, / Nārada told it to us previously; that we shall now tell you.
16.24.96
teṣāmatyugratapasāmananyāsaktacetasām ..
prasādamīśvaraścakre kāruṇyāmṛtasāgaraḥ .. 96 ..
Formerly, Daityas and Dānavas in their hundreds, haters of brahmins and gods, / approached Śaṃkara with diverse and severe austerities.
16.24.97
sa hi tribhuvanasvāmī devadevo maheśvaraḥ ..
apekṣate varaṃ dātuṃ bhaktimevānapāyinīm .. 97 ..
Upon them, endowed with exceedingly severe austerity and single-minded focus, / Īśvara, the ocean of the nectar of compassion, bestowed his grace.
16.24.98
dadau sa bhuvanaiśvaryyaprāyānabhimatānvarān ..
teṣāṃ bhaktyaiva saṃtuṣṭo devabrahmadviṣāmapi .. 98 ..
For he, the master of the three worlds, the god of gods, Maheśvara, / requires only imperishable devotion to grant a boon.
16.24.99
brahmaṇā viṣṇunā cāpi yasyāṃto nādhigamyate ..
tasyātarkyaprabhāvasya ko nu vedāśayaṃ prabhoḥ .. 99 ..
Pleased solely by their devotion, he granted the desired boons, / mostly consisting of universal sovereignty, even to those who hated gods and brahmins.

Whose limit is not reached even by Brahmā and Viṣṇu— / who indeed knows the intention of that lord of unfathomable power?
16.24.101
.. pārvatyuvāca .. ..

To the Supreme Lord who grants boons through austerities even to evil-natured Daityas, / Pārvatī, pure in heart, asked:
16.24.102
varaṃ dadāsi kiṃ teṣāṃ tādṛśānāṃ durātmanām ..
jagataḥ svastaye yeṣāṃ na manāgapi ceṣṭitam .. 102..
Pārvatī said: / “O Blessed One, having attained your grace and becoming arrogant, they torment the three worlds / and harass and agitate the gods headed by Indra.
16.24.103
tvayā dattavarānetāndivyānbhogopabhoginaḥ ..
avadhīrya tavaiśvaryaṃ kathaṃ viṣṇurnihaṃti ca .. 103 ..
Why do you grant a boon to such evil-minded ones, / whose deeds do not contribute even in the least to the welfare of the world?
16.24.104
hatānāṃ ca punasteṣāṃ kā gatiḥ syādvada prabho .. 104 ..
When they enjoy divine pleasures after being granted boons by you, / how is it that Viṣṇu slays them, disregarding your sovereignty?
16.24.105
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..

bhavaṃti lokāsteṣvete tamaḥprāyā durāsadāḥ .. 105 ..
And when they are slain, what destination is theirs? Tell me, O Lord.”
16.24.106
suraiḥ saha spardhamānāstapobhirapi tāmasaiḥ ..
māṃ bhajaṃte muhurmohājjagadutsādanodyatāḥ .. 106 ..
Īśvara said: / “Creatures are threefold: sāttvika, rājasika, / and tāmasika; among them, these [Daityas] are mostly tāmasika and difficult to subdue.
16.24.107
varaṃ dadāmi yatteṣāṃ bhaktistatra tu kāraṇam ..
ahaṃ hi bhaktyā sugrāhyo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā .. ..107..
That I grant them a boon is solely on account of devotion;
for I am easily won through devotion; no doubt should be held in this regard.
16.24.108
taponurūpānāsādya varāṃste pāpakāriṇaḥ ..
viṣṇunā yannihanyate tacca devi nibodha me..108..
Having obtained boons suited to their austerities, those evildoers
are slain by Viṣṇu; understand that from me, O goddess.
16.24.109
ahaṃ hariśca yadbhinnau guṇabhāgo'tra kāraṇam ..
paramārthādabhinnau ca rahasyaṃ paramaṃ hyadaḥ..109..
That Hari and I are distinct is due to the division of the guṇas,
yet in the ultimate sense we are non-different; this indeed is the supreme secret.
16.24.109_2
ārādhyārādhakādiśca bhedaḥ sāmānya eva nau..
tathā hyahamimāṃ gaṃgāṃ viṣṇoḥ pādāgraniḥsṛtām..7.1.24.11...
The distinction of worshipper, object of worship, and so forth is merely conventional between us.
For instance, I bear this Gaṅgā, flowing from the tip of Viṣṇu's foot,
16.24.111
vahāmi śirasā bhaktyā tvadīkṣāśaṃkito'pi san ..
api viṣṇustribhuvanaṃ paritrātuṃ vyavasthayā ..111..
upon my head with devotion, even while apprehensive of your glance.
Viṣṇu too, in order to protect the three worlds according to cosmic order,
16.24.112
māmupāsya ciraṃ lebhe cakraṃ duṣṭanibarhaṇam..
tvāṃ ca tasya mahāmāyāmaprameyātmano hareḥ .. 112..
worshipped me for a long time and obtained the discus that slays the wicked.
And you, the great māyā of that Hari whose self is immeasurable,
16.24.113
ārādhayāmi tadbhaktyā trijagajanmakāraṇam ..
śirasyādhāya cānyāṃ me śaktirūpāṃ tathā hariḥ ..113..
I worship with devotion to him as the cause of the birth of the three worlds.
Likewise, Hari, placing upon his head another [goddess] who is the form of my power,
16.24.114
ajo'pi janmānyāsādya lokarakṣāṃ karoti vai ..
haṃtuṃ hiraṇyakaśipuṃ narasiṃhavapuśca saḥ ..114..
though unborn, takes births and performs the protection of the worlds.
And in order to slay Hiraṇyakaśipu, having assumed the form of Narasiṃha,
16.24.115
jagajjighāṃsuḥ śamito mayā śarabha rūpiṇā ..
māṃ ca bāṇaparitrāṇe triśūlodyamakāriṇam .. 115 ..
he wished to destroy the world and was pacified by me in the form of Śarabha.
And when I raised my trident in defense of Bāṇa,
16.24.116
mānuṣye'pyavatāre'sau staṃbhayitvā sa līlayā ..
prabhāvaṃ mahimānaṃ ca varddhayanmāmakaṃ hariḥ ..
varivasyati māṃ nityamaṃtarātmāpi me vibhuḥ .. 116 ..
he, playfully paralyzing [me] even in a human incarnation,
enhancing my power and majesty, Hari,
though the all-pervading inner Self of mine, continually worships me.
16.24.117
athāhaṃ paramātmānamenamādyaṃtavarjitam ..
dhyānayogaiḥ samādhau ca bhāvayāmi niraṃtaram .. 117 ..
Then I, through the yogas of meditation and in absorption,
constantly contemplate him as the supreme Self, devoid of beginning or end.
16.24.119
tadevaṃ nāvayorbhedo vidyate pāramārthikaḥ ..
bhedaṃ ca tāratamyaṃ ca mūḍhā eva vitanvate .. 119 ..
Thus there is no distinction between us in the ultimate truth;
only fools elaborate upon differences and degrees of superiority.
16.24.119_3
vaiṣṇavaṃ rūpamāsthāya durvṛttānhanmi tānaham ..
gatiṃ ca teṣāmadhunā maheśvari niśāmaya .. 119 ..
Assuming the Vaiṣṇava form, I myself slay those of wicked conduct.
And now hear of their destination, O Maheśvarī:
16.24.120
mayi bhaktyavasāne tu hareḥ saṃdarśanena ca ..
krodhadarpābhibhūtatvānna muktiṃ prāpnuvaṃti te .. 7.1.24.120 ..
At the end of their devotion to me and through the direct sight of Hari,
because they are overcome by anger and pride, they do not attain liberation.
16.24.121
āvayostu prabhāvena te punarddhautakalmaṣāḥ ..
brahmarṣīṇāṃ kule janma saṃprāptā muktihetukam .. 121 ..
Yet by our power, with their blemishes washed away,
they obtain birth in the family of brahmin seers, which becomes the cause of their liberation.
16.24.122
brahmacārivratā dūrdhvaṃ yogaṃ pāśupataṃ śritāḥ ..
prācīnakarmasaṃskārātte punarmāmupāsate .. 122 ..
After taking the vow of celibacy, having resorted to the Pāśupata yoga,
they worship me once again through the impressions of former actions.
16.24.123
bhaktiyogena cāsthāya vrataṃ pāśupatādikam ..
śmaśānavāsino nagnā apare caikavāsasaḥ .. 123 ..
Resorting to the Pāśupata and other vows through the yoga of devotion,
some dwell in cremation grounds, naked, and others wear a single garment;
16.24.124
bhikṣābhujo bhūtibhṛto malliṃgānyarccayaṃti te ..
tathā madekāgradhiyo maddhyānaikadṛḍhavratāḥ .. 124 ..
living on alms, smeared with sacred ash, they worship my liṅgas;
likewise, their minds are focused on me alone, their firm vow consisting solely of meditating on me.
16.24.125
ye tvāmapi namasyaṃti jagatāṃ mama ceśvarīm..
dehāvasānayogena muktiṃ teṣāṃ dadāmyaham .. 125 ..
Those who also bow down to you, the sovereign mistress of the worlds and of myself,
to them, through yoga at the departure of their bodies, I grant liberation,
16.24.126
sārūpyasālokyamayīṃ mayyāveśitacetasām ..
sāyujyamuktaye nāyaṃ yogaḥ pāśupato yataḥ ..
smṛtyācāreṇa munibhiḥ sa sadbhistena garhitaḥ .. 126 ..
which consists of having the same form and sharing the same realm, for those whose minds are absorbed in me.
Since this Pāśupata yoga does not lead to complete absorption (sāyujya),
for that reason it is censured by virtuous sages following traditional conduct.
16.24.127
.. dvijā ūcuḥ .. ..
tīrthayātrāprasaṃgena tāni hopagatāndvijān ..

The twice-born said:
"On the occasion of a pilgrimage to sacred fords, we shall bring those brahmins
who have arrived here, their minds subdued with devotion, to their proper dignity.
16.24.128
śucibhikṣānnakaupīnakamaṇḍalvādisatkṛtāḥ ..
ananyakāryyāḥ satatamihāgatya tapasvinaḥ .. 128 ..
Honored with pure alms-food, loincloths, water pots, and the like,
having come here constantly with no other business, these ascetics,
16.24.129
bhavatpradattairvividhairupahārairataṃdritāḥ ..
tattvatastattvasaṃkhyāste śivadharmaikatatparāḥ .. 129 ..
unwearied, with the various offerings given by you,
the enumeration of the principles according to truth, solely intent on the dharma of Śiva,
16.24.130
śrīsomeśvaramabhyarcya tava śreyo'bhivarddhakāḥ ..
muktimaṃte gamiṣyaṃti devasyātisudurllabhām.. 7.1.24.130 ..
having worshipped venerable Someśvara and increasing your welfare,
will ultimately attain the god's most difficult-to-attain liberation.
16.24.131
tato'nye'tha tato'pyanye tataścānye tapodhanā ..
parīkṣitāstu te'smābhirbhavitāro niśāpate .. 131 ..
Then others, and after them still others, and then other ascetics,
examined by us, shall arise, O lord of the night!"
16.24.132
.. dvijā ūcuḥ .. ..
ityāha bhagavāndevyā pṛṣṭaḥ sa ca trilocanaḥ ..
tatraiva nāradaḥ sarvaṃ saṃvādaṃ śivayeritam(?).. 132 ..
The twice-born said:
Thus spoke the three-eyed Lord when asked by the goddess.
Right there, Nārada heard the whole dialogue uttered by Śiva and Śivā,
16.24.133
śrutvā naḥ kathayāmāsa kathāṃ goṣṭhīṣu pṛcchatām..
tava cāsmābhiradhunā sarvametadudīritam .. 133 ..
and recounted that tale to us as we asked in assemblies.
And now all of this has been spoken to you by us.
16.24.134
evamuktastu taiḥ prītaḥ somaḥ svabhavanaṃ yayau ..
tadājñayā ca tatsarvaṃ yathoktaṃ te'pi kurvate .. 134 ..
Addressed thus by them, Soma, delighted, went to his own abode;
and by his command, they too perform everything just as was told.
16.24.135
.. devyuvāca .. ..
evaṃ prabhāvo deveśaḥ someśaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ ..

The goddess said:
Such is the power of Someśa, the lord of gods, the destroyer of sins.
By what means would he be pleased—by which vow or observance?
16.24.136
.. īśvara uvāca .. ..

Īśvara said:
I shall explain clearly the dharma for the benefit of mortals,
by which that god is pleased; hear, O beauty among gods!
16.24.137

tīrthe dānāni sarvāṇi pātre dattānyaśeṣataḥ .. 137 ..
Perpetual fasts, meals only at night, and various other vows;
all kinds of gifts given entirely to worthy recipients at sacred fords;
16.24.138

austerity has been performed by him, ritual ablution has been taken by him at Puṣkara,
and water at Kedāra has certainly been drunk by him;
16.24.139
tena dṛṣṭaṃ varārohe jyotirliṃgaṃ mahāprabham ..

the jyotirliṅga of great radiance has been seen by him, O woman of shapely hips,
by whom the celestial vow of Monday has been undertaken in that refuge.
16.24.140
kimanyairbahubhirdānairdattaiḥ pātreṣu sundari .. 7.1.24.140 ..
What need is there for many other gifts given to worthy recipients, O beautiful one?
16.24.141

tena sarvaṃ kṛtaṃ devi cīrṇaṃ tatra mahāvratam .. 141 ..
By whomsoever worship has been performed with devotion on a group of eight Mondays,
by him everything has been done, O goddess; the great vow has been observed there.
16.24.142
itihāsamimaṃ pūrvaṃ kathayāmi tava priye ..
yathāvṛttaṃ mahādevi somavāravrataṃ prati .. 142 ..
I shall relate an ancient narrative to you regarding this, O my beloved,
just as it occurred, O great goddess, concerning the Monday vow.
16.24.143

A gandharva named Ghanavāhana dwells there;
he enjoys there great pleasures difficult to attain even for the gods.

16.24.147

utpannā tasya kālena putrī putrāṣṭakopari .. 147 ..
Together with her the leader of the gandharvas enjoyed pleasures;
in time, after eight sons, a daughter was born to him.
16.24.148
sarvāvayavasaṃpannā sarvavijñānavedinī ..
gaṃdharvasenā vikhyātā nāmnā sā parameśvari .. 148 ..
Endowed with all auspicious features, learned in all branches of knowledge,
she became famous by the name Gandharvasenā, O supreme sovereign.
16.24.149
kanyānāṃ tu sahasreṣu pravarā rūpaśālinī ..
kautūhalena sā pitrā proktā krīḍasva bhāmini .. 149 ..
She was foremost among thousands of maidens and endowed with great beauty.
Affectionately, her father said to her, "Play, O radiant maiden!"

16.24.151
evaṃ sā ramate nityaṃ kanyāparivṛtā sadā ..

Thus she rejoiced constantly, always surrounded by maiden companions. / Seeing her playing in this way, her mother said to her husband:
16.24.152
jīvitaṃ niṣphalaṃ svāminmama te saha bāṃdhavaiḥ ..

“My life and yours together with our kinsmen is fruitless, my lord, / in whose house such a maiden remains without a husband.”
16.24.153
ityuktaḥ sa tu gaṃdharvo bhāryāṃ vacanamabravīt ..
anveṣayāmi bharttāraṃ putryarthe tu manoharam .. 153 ..
Thus addressed, the gandharva said these words to his wife: / “I shall seek a charming husband for the sake of our daughter.”
16.24.154
ityuktvā''hvāpayāmāsa putrīṃ tāṃ ghanavāhanaḥ ..

she, auspicious one, fell at the feet of all in due order: / “Give me a command, father! What task is to be done by me now?”
